Birdie Miller
Birdie Mae Newland-Miller, 87, of Gray passed away Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2007).
She was born in St. Charles, VA, the daughter of late Joseph L. and Pearlie M. Hilton. She was preceded in death by her two sisters, Margaret Hilton and Irene Lambert; and four brothers, Otis, Stallard, Joe and Keith Hilton; her much loved dog, Blackie.
Born in St. Charles, VA, Birdie grew up in Kingsport and spent her middle years in Cleveland, OH. She had a long successful career with the Harshaw Chemical Company, finally as branch manager in Louisville, Kentucky. Upon retirement, she returned to the Kingsport area, where she became requainted with Hubert Miller, who embarked on a new life together.
Birdie was a lifelong lover of reading, classical music, and art and crafts. She devoted herself to supporting charities, was always kind to strangers, expressing a generosity of spirit that lifted one and all.
She took great joy in feeding the backyard birds, raising orchids, and appreciating the beauty of everyday,
She is survived by her husband, Hubert Miller of Gray; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Linda Newland of Ridgefield, WA, three grandchildren, Martin, Molly and Heather; one great-granddaughter, Skye; four sisters, Georgia Collier of Mentor, OH, Virginia McLaughlin of Matthews, NC, Eileen and husband Dean Streets of Thomasville, GA, Hazel Wheeler of Kingsport, TN; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Kathleen of Gray, TN.
Calling hours will be 9 to 10 a.m. at Carter-Trent funeral Home, Kingsport.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with eulogies and sharing of memories by family and friends. Burial will follow at Washington County Memory Gardens.

David Lynn Marcum
Kingsport – David Lynn Marcum, 38, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Sunday (October 14, 2007) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after an extended illness
He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, TN and was a graduate of Sullivan North High School. He formally worked in sales at Wal-Mart in Kingsport. He attended West View Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his father George W. Marcum; mother, Audrey Roberts Marcum; sister, Peggy Ann Marcum; brother, Wayne Presley.
He is survived by his wife Kimberly Crawford Marcum, of the home; brother, Jimmy Marcum and wife Linda, Kingsport; nieces, Christie Ward, Church Hill, Christina Marcum, Monessen, PA, Marissa and Haleigh Crawford, both of Blountville, Angie Robinette, Kingsport; nephews, Brandon Marcum, Kingsport, Hunter Crawford, Blountville, Wayne Presley, Jr., Kingsport.
Calling hours will be Tuesday (October 16, 2007) from 5 to 7 p.m. at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Mike Stout officiating.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday (October 17, 2007) at Oak Hill Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Martha M. Manis Necessary
Kingsport - Martha M. Manis Necessary, 74, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Saturday (October 13, 2007) at Indian Path Medical Center.
She was born in Hawkins County, TN (E. Punkin Valley) and lived in this area most of her life. She was of the Pentecostal faith.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Martha Jane Fields; parents, George G. Manis and Ebby Jane Lawson Manis; brother, Hale Manis.
She is survived by her husband of over 57 years, Clarence Reece Necessary, Sr., of the home; daughters, Mary Lawson, Blountville, TN, Hattie Edwards and husband, Jerry, Madisonville, TN; sons, David Necessary, and wife Vicki, Greenville, TN, Fred Necessary and wife, Rosa Lee, Kingsport, TN, Clarence Necessary Jr. and wife Robin, Blountville, TN, John Necessary, Church Hill, TN, Garry Necessary, Kingsport, TN and Larry “Curley” Necessary and wife Donna, Sulphur Springs, TN; twenty-five grandchildren; several great- grandchildren; sisters, Bonnie Skeens, Greenville, Dorothy, Greensboro, NC and Francis; brothers, Gale Manis, NC, Harold Manis, Kenneth Manis, Marsh Reed Manis, all of Kingsport, TN; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Monday (October 15, 2007) from 5 To 7 p.m. at Carter- Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Funeral service will be Tuesday (October 16, 2007) at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Paul Brickey, Rev. Margaret Price and Rev. Cecil Necessary officiating. Burial will follow at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

R. C. "Curley" Caldwell
Kingsport – R. C. “Curley” Caldwell, 83, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord, Friday (October 12, 2007) at his residence.
He was born in Hawkins County (Surgoinsville) and lived in Kingsport most of his life. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was retired from the Meade Corporation after over 43 ½ years serving in the Maintenance Department. He was a member of Orebank Central Baptist Church.
He was proceeded in death by his wife, Gladys Mullins Caldwell in 1994; parents, Byrd and Beatrice Dobbs Caldwell; sister, Mae Caldwell; brothers, Shields Caldwell and Richard Caldwell; mother and father-in-law, Ada and Maynard Mullins; Sister-in-laws, Vonda Yakley and Charlotte Mullins; brother-in-law, Cecil Yakley.
He is survived by daughter, Diane Caldwell, Kingsport; son, Ronald Caldwell, and wife Vicky, Marble Head, Ohio; grandchildren, Trinity Caldwell, Amanda Welter, Troy Caldwell and Clint Caldwell; great-grandchildren, Cara Caldwell, Justin Caldwell, Kayla Welter and Blake Barker; sister-in-law, Charlotte Lee, Kingsport; Special friends, Rosa Sams, Joe Pendleton, Jimmy Allen, all of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday (October 14, 2007) at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Funeral service will be 4 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Leb Thornburg and Rev. Mikey Joe Fields officiating.
Military graveside services will be11 a.m. Monday (October 15, 2007) at Long Bend cemetery, Surgoinsville, with American Legion Post 3/265 and the Tennessee National Guard conducting the rites. Pallbearers will be Steve Vermillion, Roger Poore, Kevin Horne, Rick Davis, Robert Lawson and Gary Cowdin. Family and friends who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:55 a.m.
The family would like to give special thanks to Hospice staff, Pam, Yvonne and Elinore; and also Care Center staff, B.J., Barbara and Joy.

Maxie Adra Carver
Kingsport - Maxie Adra Carver, 72, Kingsport, went to be with the Lord Wednesday (October 10, 2007) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County (Kingsport), and was of the Baptist faith.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, Granville and Clauda Begley Carver; sisters, Kathryn Ruth Perry, Ruby Carver, Gladys Darlene “Peggy” Northam and Lois King; brother, Ted Carver.
She is survived by her sisters, Mae Arnold and husband Paul, Fay Light and husband Carl, Shirley Neeley and husband Harvey, Louise Penley and husband Jerry, all of Kingsport; brother, Blaine Carver and wife Judy, Weber City; several nieces and nephews; special nieces, Karen Perry, Misty Neeley, Amanda DeBord, Sharon DeBord; special friends, Sam and Joyce Neeley and Linda Rhea.
Calling hours will be 4 to7 p.m. Friday (October 12, 2007) at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport. Family and friends may also visit anytime at the residence of Lake Street.
Funeral service will be 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Michael Carver and Rev. Jerry Carver officiating. Music will be provided by Karen Mann, Traci Dockery, Melinda Campbell, Marlana Dean.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday (October 13, 2007) at Morrison Chapel cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews. Honorary Pallbearers will be Blake Neeley, Jordan DeBord, Seth DeBord and Ezekiel Carver. Family and friends who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:55 a.m.

Leona Neeley Glass
Kingsport - Leona Neeley Glass, 87, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 31, 2006, at her home at her residence.
She was born in Clinchport, VA and had lived in Kingsport since 1937. Leona loved bowling, antiques auctions, cooking home-cooked meals and sharing them with family and friends. She was previously employed at Tennessee Eastman and later became interested in buying property and making a home for others to live in. She began her real estate and landlord business while her husband was co-owner of the Glass Electric Furniture Co. Leona was a member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary of Kingsport and was a founding member of Holy Mountain Baptist Church, having attended Cedar View Independent Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Glass; her parents, Roscoe Neeley and Georgia Mae Sloan Neeley Whitman; and one brother, Harvey "H.P." Neeley .
Surviving is her daughter, Donna Glass; her son, Rickie Elmer Glass; five grandchildren, Chris L. Glass, Becky Phillips, Natalie Kaye Carter Rogers, Brandon J. Glass, and Daniel B Glass; a sister-in-law, Helen Neeley; and a special friend, Terri Slaughter.
Calling hours are from 12 pm to 2 pm on Friday, November 3, 2006 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Jerry Musick, officiating.
Graveside services will follow at Oak Hill cemetery, Kingsport. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Larry Collins is an Honorary Pallbearer.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Mountain Baptist Church, 3121 Ashley Street, Kingsport, TN 37664.
