Tennessee, U.S., Delayed Birth Records, 1869-1909
Delmer Wallen, Sr.
Delmer Wallen, Sr., age 78, of 817 Morison Avenue, Kingsport, left this earthly dwelling for his heavenly home on Monday (January 28, 2008) after a long illness.
He was born in Kyles Ford, Hancock County, Tennessee, and had lived in Kingsport for most of his years since 1943. He was employed by Kingsport Grocery Company (wholesale grocers) for thirty-two years, serving as president and general manager. He was in the wholesale grocery business for forty years, also managing wholesale grocery companies in Middlesboro and Harlan, Kentucky and in Johnson City, Tennessee. After leaving the wholesale grocery business, he was a real estate broker and insurance agent.
He was active in community and civic affairs, serving on several boards, some of which were: Holston Valley Community Hospital, Salvation Army in Kingsport and Middlesboro, Kentucky, Junior Achievement of Kingsport where he served as president, charter board member of Girls, Inc, Kingsport Community Chest (now United Way), American Cancer Society, East Tennessee State University National alumni board. He served as president of Harlan County, KY Chamber of Commerce in 1986. He was a charter member of The Optimist Club of Downtown Kingsport (chartered-1964), and served as club president. He was governor of the Tennessee District of Optimist in 1969-70. He served as a member of the executive board of the Sullivan County Republican Party for many years, and was elected as chairman of the Sullivan County Republican Party to serve January, 1999- January, 2001.
He was a 50-year member of the American Legion, having served during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, and was one of the founders and the charter president of the National 361st Engineer Construction Battalion Reunion Group. He was a York Rite Mason and Shriner.
He was a member of the West View Primitive Baptist Church, where he served as Church Clerk/Treasurer, teacher of adult Sunday School Class and was a member of the Church quartet. He loved his church family, and until his illness, he was faithful to whatever his role happened to be.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Bertha (Bledsoe) Wallen; 3 sisters, Lola Mae Robinette, Belva Wallen and Goldie Tittle; 5 brothers, O.J., Ellis Sr., Burnis, Glynn, and Paul.
Surviving are his loving and caring wife of 51 years, Jean Casteel Wallen; daughter, Donna Bailey, and husband Bob of Lawrenceville, GA; 2 sons, Chief Petty Officer, Delmer Wallen, Jr., and wife Vicki with the U.S. Navy, (Kuwait), David and wife Cathy of Calhoun, GA; 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth Bailey, Bobby Bailey, Chase Wallen, Will Wallen and Katie Wallen.
Calling hours will be from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday (January 31, 2008) at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Funeral service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Elder Burnice Sybert, Elder John Arnotte, and Elder Walter Willis officiating. Music will be provided by the West View Singers, and Carl Archer, (Trumpet).
Entombment services will be conducted 12 noon Friday (January 1, 2008) at Oak Hill Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Gale McCullogh, Jack Osborne, Bill Stewart, George Cole, Kenny Fannon, and Bobby Bailey. Honorary pallbearers will be Gaines Wallen, Darrell Wallen, Stan Wallen, Andy Wallen, Joe C. Wallen and Clay E. Boyd, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Optimist Club of Downtown Kingsport, Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 185, Kingsport, TN 37662.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.

James L. Carroll
James L. Carroll, age 64 of Rogersville passed away Tuesday (January 29, 2008) at James H. Quillen DVAMC.
He was born in Sullivan County, Tenn. (Kingsport) and moved to Rogersville, Tenn. in 1990. He retired from the U. S. Army after 22 years of service and was awarded the Good Conduct Metal. He was of the Baptist faith.
Mr. Carroll was preceded in death by his Father, Guy Hershel Carroll; 2 sisters, Shirley Carpenter and Juanita Carroll; 2 brothers, Otis Carroll, and Howard Carroll.
He is survived by his wife Chong Souel Carroll, of the home; 3 daughters, Jennifer Carroll, Rogersville, Linda Moody and husband, Joseph, Jefferson City, Tenn, and Selina M.; mother, Vida Thompson Hood, and husband Bobby Hood; 2 grandsons, Christopher; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hour will be from 12 to 1 p.m. Friday (February 1, 2008) at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Joe W. Byrd officiating.
Military graveside will follow at John Salling cemetery in Ft. Blackmore, Va. with American Legion Post 3/265, Joe W. Byrd, Chaplain. Family and friends will be serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Carl Jones, and Jim Jones.

Jean V. Richards
Kingsport - Jean V. Richards, 74, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord and her husband John, on Monday, April 10, 2006, at Holston Valley Medical Center following a long illness.
Jean was born in Kingsport where she had lived most of her life, and was retired from Parks-Belk following several yeras of service. She was a member of Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Richards and her parents, Dennie Casteel and Pauline Pyle Casteel.
Surviving are her daughter, Sharon Cole and husband Tom of Kingsport; son, Joseph Michael Richards and wife Terri of Kingsport; 2granddaughters, Tammy Cantrell and husband Jeremy of Atlanta, GA and Melanie Richards of Kingsport; an adopted granddaughter, Jennifer Lavarn of Kingsport; 2 sisters, Barbara Combs and husband Hascal and Carolyn Morelock and husband Bill all of Mt. Carmel, along with several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 12 noon to 2 pm on Wednesday, April 12, 2006 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 2 pm in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Millard Porter, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Oak Hill cemetery, Kingsport. Michael Hutson, David Hill, Jeremy Cantrell, Terry Quillen, Jeff Combs, and Joshua Hutson will serve as pallbearers.

Blanche Herron Brown
Kingsport – Blanche Herron Brown, 82, of Kingsport, passed away Wednesday April 2, 2008 at Gray Life Care Center after an extended illness.
Born in Dickenson County VA and had lived in Kingsport most of her life. Blanche was employed by Kingsport Housing Company, The Modern Baker, and Martinized Dry Cleaners. Mrs. Brown was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence Brown; son, Eugene Brown; parents, John Rufus (J.R.) Herron and Mellie Tilson Herron; brothers, Carl, Lofa and Charlie Herron; sisters, Osta and Rosalie Jones.
She is survived by her son, Dennis “Tiny” Brown, Kingsport, TN; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 12 noon to 1 p.m. Friday April 4, 2008 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel, with Pastor Charles Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Mowel cemetery, Church Hill, TN.(Goshen Valley). Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Billie G. Rock
Kingsport – Billie G. Rock, 69, of Kingsport, passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday April 1, 2008 at Indian Path Hospital.
Billie was born in Washington County, VA. Mr. Rock lived in Kingsport since 1954 and was a veteran of the U.S. Air force. Billie was a retired owner/operator trucker, (truck driver). Mr. Rock was a member of the United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Rock in 2000.
He is survived by his sons, Billy Rock and Sandra, of Fall Branch, Tim Rock,Kingsport, and Danny Rock,Kingsport; brother, Charles Rock, Dover, Delaware; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Friday April 4, 2008 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport.
Funeral services will be Friday April 4, 2008 at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ray Amos officiating.
Military graveside services will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday April 5, 2008 at East Lawn Memorial Park, with American Legion Post 3/265 and the TN National Guard conducting the rites. Pallbearers will be Mike Rock, David Laney, Wayne Kinsler, Tim Morrison, Dave Morrison, and Kenny Hicks. Family and friends who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:25 a.m.

James Arthur "Jay" Byrd
James Arthur "Jay" Byrd, age 85, of Kingsport, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 4, 2008, at James H. Quillen DVAMC in Mountain Home, TN.
He was born in Scott County, VA (Gate City) and lived in Kingsport most of his life. He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. Jay was an avid fan of blue grass and country music and played the bass, mandolin, guitar and just about any other instrument. He was retired from Meade Corporation after several years of service and attended Bethel Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Byrd and Bertha Bates Byrd; four sisters, Polly Lane, Georgia Pierson, Edith Huffman and Ruth Cole and three brothers, Norman Byrd, Conley Byrd and Paul Byrd.
Survivors include his loving wife of 59 1/2 years, Marion Jones Byrd of the home; two daughters, Elizabeth Lyon and husband Adrian of Kingsport and Amy Byrd of GA; two sons, Alan Byrd and Andy Byrd both of Kingsport; two granddaughters, Jennifer Corbin and husband Joel of Knoxville and Sarah Byrd of GA; two grandsons, Aaron Byrd and Adam Byrd both of Kingsport; a sister, Rhoda Cole and a brother, Ray Byrd both of Blountville along with several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, April 7, 2008 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Inc., 520 Watauga Street, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow in the chapel at 7:00 PM with Pastor Gary Bement, officiating. Music by Mark Staten and Bruce Lyttle.
Military Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 in the Mountain Home National cemetery, Mountain Home, TN conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post # 3, Gate City Post #265 and the TN National Guard, with Joe W. Byrd, Chaplain. Pallbearers will be the Color Guard and Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Presbyterian Church, 1593 Warpath Drive, Kingsport, TN 37664 or to a charity of your choice.

Katherine Richner McGough
Katherine Richner McGough, age 90, of Gray went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN.
She was born in Philadelphia, PA and lived in this area for the past 6 1/2 years and attended Christ Fellowship Church in Kingsport.
Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, Harry B. McGough, her son, Harry B. McGough, Jr. and her sister, Rosemary Copeland.
Survivors include her daughter, Kathy Greene of New Jersey; her son, Robert McGough and wife Charlene of Gray, TN; six grandchildren, George McGough, Scott McGough, Jennifer Watson, Leslie Cradic, Mary Greene and Nancy Greene; five great-grandchildren, Adam McGough, Krysten McGough, Marrisa Kilbourne, Kaitlyn Watson and Owen Watson; a sister, Helen Dunnder of Florida along with several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 at Carter-Trent Funeral Home, Kingsport. Funeral Services will follow in the chapel with Rev. Greg DePriest, officiating.
Interment will be in the Rest land cemetery in East Hanover, N.J. on Thursday, April 10th, 2008
