Marion Herbert 'Herb' Ownby
Father of Marian Groover
Marion Herbert "Herb" Ownby, 86, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Oct. 14, 1998.
Mr. Ownby is survived by two daughters, Marian O. Groover of Oak Ridge and Dannielle Henry of Ohio; four sons, Walter Kenneth Ownby of Sevierville, Johnny Carl Ownby and his wife Pauline, of Florida, Ronnie Conley Ownby and his wife Leslie, of Texas, and Delmer Ray Large and his wife Evelyn, of Virginia; and two brothers, Cletis Ownby and his wife Martha, and John Walker Ownby and his wife Irene, all of Sevierville.
The funeral will be held at 7 tonight, Oct. 16, in the East Chapel of Atchley Funeral Home, 118 E. Main St., Sevierville, with the Rev. Andy Ball officiating.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, in Ownby cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 tonight in the funeral home.

John 'Richard' Smith
Retired K-25 technician
John "Richard" Smith, 52, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, May 2, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Smith was retired after 20 years of employment with Union Carbide Nuclear Division. At the time he retired, he was a senior lab technician at the Oak Ridge K-25 Site.
He was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Knoxville on July 6, 1945, and spent his childhood and teen-age years in Clinton. He was a Boy Scout and played trumpet in the band at Clinton High School, from which he graduated in 1964.
Mr. Smith attended the University of Tennessee and East Tennessee State University. He was a police officer in Atlanta, Ga., during the late 1960s.
He was a former National Guardsman and member of the Civil Air Patrol. During his younger years, he was a licensed pilot and had taken advanced training at the Knoxville Airport.
Also in earlier years, he was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church of Clinton and later became a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge. His family described him as a devoted Christian who visited the sick and attended to the needs of others. They said he was also a good father who was devoted to his family and his extended family and would be missed and ever remembered by all.
Mr. Smith was actively involved with Oak Ridge mental health programs as a member of the Tennessee Mental Health Consumers Association. He had many friends in the Villager and the drop-in center, his family said.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Spencer Smith; a daughter, Keisha Smith Dalton and her husband, Brian, of Oak Ridge; a son, Roy Mulkey of Oliver Springs; two grandchildren, Derrick and Amanda Mulkey; his parents, James William "Bill" and Juanita Webb Smith of Clinton; his mother-in-law, Grace Spencer of Georgia; two brothers, Dr. David Smith and his wife, Vickie, of Knoxville, and J.W. Smith and his wife, Dawn, of Kerville, Texas; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
His grandparents, John V. and Nancy Smith and Otis and Jessie Webb, died earlier.
The funeral will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Michael Johnson of Trinity United Methodist Church officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Clinton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
Robert Milton Simmons Sr.
Retired ORNL employee
Robert Milton "Bob" Simmons Sr., 84, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Simmons was a retired technician from Union Carbide Nuclear Division. He retired July 7, 1972, from the Health Physics Department at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
He was born March 18, 1913. He enjoyed working in his vegetable and flower garden and sharing it with others, the family said. He liked to help foreign students who came to Oak Ridge for training at Martin Marietta. He also enjoyed collecting caps.
Mr. Simmons is survived by two daughters, Sharon S. Martin of Albuquerque, N.M., and Patricia Coffey and her husband, Wayne, of Tazewell; a son, Dr. R. Mike Simmons of Johnson City; a sister, Elsie Weaver of Franklin; and 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many other relatives.
The funeral was held Sunday, Oct. 5, in the chapel of McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Hubbard officiating.
Burial was at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons: Michael Simmons, Brant Simmons, Scott Simmons, Ryan Simmons, Kevin Connor, Chris Connor, Joshua Simmons, Jake Simmons and Drew Simmons.
Coffey Funeral Home in Tazewell handled arrangements.
Sara Cunningham Stokes

Sara Cunningham Stokes, 81, of Baker Avenue, Clinton, died Monday, Dec. 29, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Stokes was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church of Clinton.
She formerly worked for Dr. J.E. Jones, Dr. P.J. Wenk and Dr. Joe Rainey, for the Clinton Housing Authority and for City & County Bank.
Born in Guntersville, Ala., on Oct. 11, 1916, she was a graduate of Knoxville Business College.
She is survived by two daughters, Ferris Wood and her husband, Lynn, and Lyndall Ridenour and her husband, Roger, all of Clinton; a son, Tom Randall Stokes and friend, Dr. Kathryn Price, both of Knoxville; five grandchildren, Julie Busch and her husband, Matthew Wood Busch, of Raleigh, N.C., Amy Lynn Wood of Clinton, David Wood of Georgetown, Texas, Lea Ellen Agee and her husband, John Agee, of Kingston, and Darren Ridenour and his wife, Tina Ridenour, of Nashville; two great-grandchildren, Logan Christopher Ridenour and Sara Elizabeth Agee; and by several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Stokes' parents, Woods Cunningham and Allie Cunningham Peak, her husband, Earl Montford Stokes, and two sisters, Tommie Agnelly and Ernestine Payne, died earlier.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, at Memorial United Methodist Church in Clinton with the Rev. Warren Wattenbarger officiating. Burial will be at Sunset cemetery in Clinton.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Lloyd N. Williams
Former Magnet Mills director
Lloyd N. Williams, 85, of Timothy Avenue, Clinton, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 1998, at Mariner Health of Norris.
Mr. Williams was the former personnel director of Magnet Mills in Clinton. He was retired from the Kellwood Co. in Knoxville.
He was the son of R.W. and Emma Williams and was a graduate of the University of Tennessee.
Mr. Williams was a 50-year member of the Clinton Lions Club, a former board member of Oak Ridge Hospital and a member of Clinton Housing Authority.
He was also a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Clinton and the Men's Wesleyan Class of the church. He taught the youth group for five years and served as chairman of various committees.
Mr. Williams is survived by his daughter, Nancy Moschis and her husband, George, of Atlanta, Ga.; his sister, Sara Nell Bowers and her husband, William, of Hayden, Ala.; and his nephew. Bill Bowers of Gadsden, Ala.
His wife, Mildred Williams, and his brother, Ralph Williams, died earlier.
The funeral will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Warren Wattenbarger officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at McCarty Woodhaven Memorial Gardens, Claxton. Pallbearers are Dr. Dan Thomas, Fred, Erik and Chris Martinson, Ed Brown, Jim E. Medley, Bill McBride, Neil Vaughn and Gordon Thompson.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Robert 'Bob' Gibbs
Retired Y-12 Plant machinist
Robert "Bob" K. Gibbs, 64, of Claxton, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, at his home after a long illness.
Mr. Gibbs had worked as a machinist at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant for 32 years. He retired in 1989 from Martin Marietta Energy Systems.
He was born in Clarksville on July 29, 1933, the son of Joe and Louise Powers Gibbs. He served with the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956.
Mr. Gibbs had been a member of Edgemoor Baptist Church in Claxton for 35 years. He was also a member of Alpha Masonic Lodge No. 380 in Clinton.
He is survived by his wife, Laurie Myers Gibbs; three children, Richard Gibbs and his wife, Susan, of Marlow, Barbara Kelley and her husband, Ron, of Powell, and Jeffrey Gibbs and his wife, Christy, of Oak Ridge; three grandchildren, Joe Gibbs of Marlow, Matthew Kelley of Powell and Rachel Gibbs of Oak Ridge; a sister, Judy Smith and her husband, Dale, of Oak Ridge; and by two nieces, Teresa Sands of Nashville and Gina Smith of Oak Ridge.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Stanley Young officiating.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at McCarty-Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home.
William Harris Rollen
Retired teacher, county agent
William Harris Rollen, 94, of Elm Hill Drive, Clinton, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Rollen had taught school in Pearson, Ga., and in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. He had also been a county agent in Webster County, Ga.
He was born in Grandview, Texas, on Nov. 30, 1902, and was a graduate of the University of Georgia.
Mr. Rollen had been a member of First Baptist Church in Fort Walton Beach for 26 years and served the church as a Sunday school teacher and training union teacher. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Frisco City, Fla.
He was an avid gardener and woodworker and loved to read, his family said.
Mr. Rollen is survived by his wife, Evelyn Rollen of Fort Walton Beach; a daughter, Dean Barbieri of Lake Worth, Fla.; three sons, William "Bill" Rollen Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of Claxton, Hubert Y. Rollen and his wife, Ann, of Clinton, and James H. Rollen of Jacksonville, N.C.; a sister, Evelyn Spraggins of Destin, Fla.; and by 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Ann Y. Rollen of Williston, Fla., was his first wife and is the mother of his children.
Reba P. Terry of Starke, Fla., was considered a very special friend.

Mary B. Cross

Mary B. Cross, 96, of Farragut, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997, at Baptist Health Care in Lenoir City.
Mrs. Cross is survived by three daughters-in-law, Rosa Lee Cross of Oak Ridge, Marijane Cross of Knoxville and Dot Cross of Farragut.
The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, at Rose Mortuary, Mann Heritage Chapel, Kingston Pike, Knoxville. The Rev. Doug Sager will officiate.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Concord Masonic cemetery, Knoxville.

Albert L. Mayfield
Retired DOE employee
Albert L. Mayfield, 73, of West Knoxville, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 1997, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.
Mr. Mayfield was retired from the Department of Energy after more than 35 years of government service. At the time he retired, he was a property management officer in the Supply Division of DOE's Oak Ridge Operations office. He specialized in administering federal programs for the annual redistribution or disposal of excess property.
He served from 1943 to 1946 with the U.S. Navy, participating in the invasion of several South Pacific islands. After his discharge from the Navy, Mr. Mayfield joined the Supply Division of the Manhattan District, U.S. Corps of Engineers, in Oak Ridge. He later worked for the Atomic Energy Commission and the Energy Research and Development Administration, both DOE predecessor agencies.
Mr. Mayfield was a member of Concord United Methodist Church in Farragut.
He is survived by his wife, Hannah B. Mayfield; a son, Art Mayfield of Knoxville; two granddaughters, Stephanie Wright of Atlanta, Ga., and Susanne Hargrove of Lewisburg; and two great-grandchildren, Larry Wayne Hargrove and Breanne Rochelle Hargrove, both of Lewisburg.
Mr. Mayfield is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Glenda Mayfield of Knoxville; five sisters, Jennie Lou Haley, Pearl Rogers, Lois Henley, Grace Coffelt and Doris Murray; four brothers, Raymond Mayfield, John D. Mayfield, William A. Mayfield Jr. and Robert W. Mayfield; and by several nieces and nephews.
A son, Capt. Larry Allan Mayfield, died earlier.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, in the chapel of Rose Mortuary, Mann Heritage Chapel, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville. The Rev. Ron Hammond and the Rev. Cabel Trent will officiate.
Burial will be at Highland Memorial cemetery in Knoxville.
