Mary Reed Davis

Mary Elizabeth Reed Davis, 59, of Eden, N.C., died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at her home after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Mrs. Davis was born Feb. 25, 1938, in the former Wheat community, now part of Oak Ridge. She was the daughter of Robert Mack and Zettie Reed.
She was a graduate of Clinton High School and of Knoxville Business College. She enjoyed crafts and playing the piano.
Mrs. Davis is survived by her husband, Anthony Davis; a daughter, Wilma Keeton Poole and her husband, Wayne, of Orange City, Fla.; a son, Steve Keeton and his wife, Nola, of Tyler, Texas; a granddaughter, Tabatha June Harnage of Orange City; and a grandson, Austin Keeton of Tyler.
She is also survived by two sisters, Maxene Reed Hopwood of Oak Ridge and Carol Ann Reed Earle of Clinton; three nieces, Sandra Hopwood of Knoxville and Shannon Earle and Mackenzie Earle, both of Clinton; two nephews, Gary Hopwood of Knoxville and Chip Earle of Clinton; and by her stepmother, Amanda Reed of Clinton.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in the chapel of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Reidsville, N.C.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the funeral home.
The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the library at Clinton Elementary School, 209 S. Hicks St., Clinton, TN 37716.
William Otto Woods
Retired Firestone bookkeeper
William Otto Woods, 80, of Coalfield, died Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, at the Veterans Administration Regional Medical Center in Johnson City.
Mr. Woods was retired after working for 35 years as a bookkeeper for the Firestone Co. in Greeneville.
He was born in Coalfield on Aug. 16, 1917, the son of William C. and Nellie Jones Woods. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and had been awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.
Mr. Woods is survived by a daughter, Sharen Eden and her husband, Jack, of Earth, Texas; three grandchildren, Eric Jordan and Christopher Jordan, both of Earth, and Ruth Eden of Knoxville; two sisters, Wilma Foraker and Mary Kathryn Davis, both of Oliver Springs; and two brothers, Austin Woods and Robert Woods, both of Coalfield.
His wife, Mary Ruth Maston Woods, two brothers, Hubert Woods and Ellis Woods, and two sisters, Carrie Honaker and Cassie Musselwhite, are deceased.
The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, Oct. 15, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Gary Smith officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Woods cemetery in Coalfield.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
Nova Mae Welch
Mother of Oak Ridge resident
Nova Mae Welch, 91, a resident of Baptist Health Care Center in Lenoir City and a former resident of Maryville, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 14, 1997, at Fort Sanders/Loudon Medical Center.
Mrs. Welch was the mother of Shirley Gray of Oak Ridge.
She was a Baptist.
In addition to her local daughter, she is survived by another daughter, Nancy Connatser and her husband, James "Jim" Connatser, of Maryville; a sister, Irene Love of Alabama; three brothers, Robert Love of Oak Ridge, A.W. Love of Knoxville and Frank Love of Blue Springs; and by seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A son, James Floyd Russell, died earlier.
The funeral will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, 915 W. Broadway, Maryville. The Rev. Gene Gann will officiate.
Family and friends will meet at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Sherwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel for the burial service.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Carrie Cuberson Shy
Retired Fairview employee
Carrie Cuberson Glaze Shy, 86, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, Oct. 13, 1997, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Shy was retired from the city housing corporation (Fairview Apartments Co.), and was the 1991 recipient of the Award of Excellence for public relations.
She was born in Dandridge on July 26, 1911, the daughter of Charlie and Della Marshall Cuberson. She moved to Washington, D.C., at an early age and later returned to Tennessee.
Mrs. Shy had worked for the Knox County school system and for Davis Brothers Cafeteria. She was a licensed beautician and had been a security guard and a deputy for the Anderson County Sheriff's Department.
She was an active member of Spurgeon Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where she served on the deaconess board and the lay council and was a member of the Sunday school. She was also a member of many community organizations, including Eastern Star, and had received numerous awards for her service.
Mrs. Shy is survived by her granddaughter, Sheryl Smith Wilson-Davis, whom she raised as a daughter; two sons, William Kelly Smith and Alfonso Davidson; five grandsons, Larry and his wife, Sheila, Lonnie, Jeffrey and his wife, Kathy, Daryl, and the Rev. Terry Minor and his wife, D'juna; two foster daughters, Virginia Miller and her son, Jerry, and Mary Martin and her children; and several cousins, including Fannie Lou McKinney and family, Rosa Cuberson and family, Willie Mae Howell and family and the Humphrey and Cuberson families.
She is also survived by 24 great-grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Dashawn Dotson, Joshua Davenport, Jimmicia Sullivan and Trey Duley; several nieces and nephews; and those she considered members of her extended family, Drs. John Preston, Tom Clary and Frank Delemno.
Mrs. Shy's church family and friends were William Shy, Annie Bell "Mae" Jones, Paulette Minor, Rhonda Minor, Mary Davis, Jean Lewis, Thomas and Ann Bratton and family, Bertha Osborn, Ann Smith, Willie Patrick, Mary Clark, Betty Bailes and Auburn Hill Apartments neighbors, including her friend and neighbor, Lilly Bell Wrench.
Her two daughters, Lida Mabin and Betty Jean Minor, and a grandson, Jimmie Lee "Squallie" Smith Jr., died earlier.
Theodore W. Glaze, her former husband, is also deceased.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Spurgeon Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. L.C. Dillingham officiating.
Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Willie Lawson Broyles

Willie Purl Lawson Broyles, 91, of Clinton, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1997, at her home.
Mrs. Broyles is survived by a daughter, Ola Lee Duncan and her husband, Ray, of Clinton; a son, Theodore Broyles and his wife, Janice, of Whitwell; three sisters, Anna Lee Beach of East Liverpool, Ohio, Georgia Trowbridge of Knoxville and Alice Alexander of Saltillo, Tenn.; and two brothers, John Lawson of Lake City and Mitt Lawson of Wichita, Kan.
The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Oct. 15, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. Phil Jones officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Blowing Springs Baptist Church cemetery in Clinton.

Walter 'Bert' Bolton

Walter "Bert" Bolton, 90, of LaFollette, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, at St. Mary's Medical Center, Knoxville.
Mr. Bolton is survived by three daughters, Barbara "Joye" White of LaFollette, Wilma Jean Spears of Indiana and Beverly C. Calloway of New Mexico; three sons, Ralph Bolton, Calvin Bolton and Randy White, all of LaFollette; and his sister, Pearl Kidwell of LaFollette.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City.
Burial will be at Sulphur Springs cemetery in Clinton.

Jessie Vandlee Gibbs

Jessie Vandlee Gibbs, 83, of Clinton, died Saturday, Aug. 22,1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Gibbs was a homemaker and the widow of Wayne Gibbs.
She was born Sept. 7, 1924, in Anderson County, the daughter of Horace and Janie Russell, both now deceased .
Mrs. Gibbs is survived by two daughters, Kay Hammond of Clinton and Jane Bullock of Heiskell; three sons, Roger Gibbs, Russell Gibbs and Bill Gibbs, all of Clinton; four sisters, Mary Maude Duncan and Polly Vickery, both of Clinton, Zella Mae Stewart of Ferndale, Fla., and Georgia Kelley of Oak Ridge; one brother, Fred Russell of Clinton; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Another daughter, Ella Sue Denney, two sons, Ray Gibbs and Cecil Gibbs, and two brothers, Harry Lee Russell and Glenn "Joe" Russell, all died earlier.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Hayes Lively officiating.
Burial will follow at Hooks cemetery.

Sandra Leone Hayes
Former Oak Ridge resident
Sandra Leone Hayes, 39, of Daytona Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, in Daytona Beach of liver dysfunction.
Ms. Hayes was born in Marietta, Ga., and moved with her family to Oak Ridge in 1963. She was a 1976 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, where she played the flute in the band and sang in the chorus.
She graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in telecommunications and psychology. She was a member of Delta Zeta sorority.
Ms. Hayes was a licensed optician and real estate broker. She was a member of the Professional Opticians of Florida and the Board of Realtors. She had been a resident of Daytona Beach since 1990, moving there from Leesburg, Fla.
She enjoyed Hobi-Cat sailing, the ocean and the beach, hot weather, swimming and crafts, her family said.
Ms. Hayes is survived by her son, G. Grant Hayes II of Birmingham, Ala.; her parents, John and Eva Leone of Oak Ridge; her sister, Jennifer L. Bradley of Knoxville; her nephew, Jason Bradley of Chattanooga; and many aunts, uncles and cousins, including an aunt she considered special, Doris Sellers of Macon, Ga.
David Vaughn of Daytona Beach was considered a special friend.
The body was cremated. Volusia Memorial Park in Port Orange, Fla., handled arrangements.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The Rev. Larry Dipboye and Lynn Packwood will officiate.
Edith Berman
Former Oak Ridge resident
Edith Berman of St. Paul, Minn., formerly of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, in St. Paul.
Mrs. Berman and her husband, Abe Berman, were active members of the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge. She was also active in the Sisterhood of the Synagogue, in Hadassah and in similar organizations at the St. Paul Temple of Aaron.
Her husband died earlier.
Mrs. Berman is survived by three children, Louis Berman, Mark Berman and Debra Jopp; and seven grandchildren, Sara, Lisa, Noah, Abram, Laura, April and Tammy.
The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, July 27, in St. Paul.

Ruby Lee Burrell Slice, 73, of Clinton, died Wednesday, July 8, 1998, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Slice retired Sept. 30, 1985, from Martin Marietta Energy Systems Inc. She had worked as a secretary in the Solid State Division.
She was born in Richmond, Va., on June 3, 1925, the daughter of Clyde and Annie Williams Southworth.
Mrs. Slice was a member of Turning Point Baptist Church in Clinton.
She is survived by her husband, James A. Slice Jr.; a daughter, Sharyn Lee Kuebbing of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two sons, Donald Carlton Burrell and his wife, Carol, of Lilburn, Ga., and Jack Clyde Burrell of Clinton; and three stepchildren, Joyce Ann Wells and her husband, David, of Greenville, S.C., Jane Elizabeth Bryant and her husband, Gary, of Lenoir City, and James Alvin Slice III and his wife, Susie, of McDonough, Ga.
Mrs. Slice is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kirk Kuebbing, stationed with the U.S. Army in Hawaii, Theresa Kuebbing, a student at Slippery Rock College in Pennsylvania, Ryan Burrell and Bo Burrell, both of Knoxville, and Zachary Burrell, David Burrell and Jane Elizabeth Burrell, all of Lilburn; 11 step-grandchildren, Aaron Wells, Nathan Wells, Samuel Pendleton, Malachi Slice, David Slice, James A. Slice IV, John Michael Slice, Katy Oakes, Garrett Bryant, Amanda Bryant and Elizabeth Bryant; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 11, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Willis E. Baker Jr. officiating.
Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Pallbearers are William Lynn Slice, Kenneth Scruggs, Ryan Burrell, Bo Burrell, Jerry White, Bobby Tichenor, and an alternate, Bob Letellier.
