Self-employed truck driver
Dale Trent Williams, 61, of Norris, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Williams was self-employed as a truck driver.
He was born in Anderson County on Nov. 12, 1936, the son of Harvey and Nola Wiggins Williams, who are deceased. He was a U.S. Army veteran and he was a Baptist.
Mr. Williams is survived by his son, Travis Williams; his sister, Ambia Ottinger of Dandridge; three brothers, Harlan Williams and his wife, Myrna, Ray Williams and his wife, Ruth, and Mitchell Williams and his wife, Geneva, all of Clinton; and by several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Norris Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Katherine Nance officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Sept. 23, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.
George W. Evans
Retired MMES security director
George W. Evans, 74, of Oak Ridge, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Evans retired in 1989 from Martin Marietta Energy Systems and predecessor contractors at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. During his 45 years of employment, he held positions of increasing responsibility and played a leading role in the building of the lithium plant at Y-12.
In 1968, he was appointed manager of the Utilities and Shift Superintendent Operations, which included the fire, security and plant protection forces.
As manager, he had the lead role in putting in place the many safeguards and security upgrades implemented during the 1970s and '80s. In August 1985, Mr. Evans was assigned the oversight responsibility for security operations at all sites operated by Martin Marietta at Portsmouth, Ohio, Paducah, Ky., and Oak Ridge.
During his employment, he was the recipient of several awards and citations.
Mr. Evans was born in Twinton, Tenn., on Dec. 1, 1923, the son of Willie and Flora Evans, both now deceased. He moved to Cumberland County with his family when he was 10. He was a graduate of Cumberland County High School and lettered in football. He was also a veteran of World War II.
He was a member of the Oak Ridge Rotary Club and served as its president and as governor of his district, which consisted of more than 60 clubs. During his 27 years of membership, he had a record of perfect attendance and was a Paul Harris Fellow.
His belief in the "4-Way Test" and "Service Before Self" led him to work with many community service groups, including Camp Fire, helping the organization clear land for what would become Camp Tiyani. He also volunteered with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, the Oak Ridge 50th Birthday Celebration and the Elks Lodge as well as other organizations.
Mr. Evans was a member of First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge and of Faith Masonic Lodge in Oak Ridge.
He enjoyed farming at his family's farm on the Homesteads in Cumberland County. He also enjoyed horses when his children were at home, and was a member of the East Tennessee Riding Club. He was a past member of the Oak Ridge Country Club, where he enjoyed playing golf.
Mr. Evans is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gladys Wimberly Evans; three daughters, Sandra Davidson and her husband, Tom, of Claxton, Susan Latham and her husband, Bobby, and Martha Barker and her husband, Richard, all of Oak Ridge; grandchildren Elise Williams and her husband, Chuck, Christine Graham, Greg and Lindsey Barker, all of Oak Ridge, and Shana Davidson of Knoxville; and great-grandchildren Melanie and Lynn Williams of Oak Ridge.
He is also survived by four sisters, Margaret Boles of Oak Ridge, Willine Hyder and her husband, Billy, of Chattanooga, Mabel Mincey of Mattison, Ill., and Elizabeth Garcia and her husband, Tony, of Broadview, Ill.; a brother-in-law, Cleo Taylor and his wife, Virginia, of Crossville; a cousin-in-law, Neva Evans of Oak Ridge; sisters-in-law Bessie Harness and her husband, Dwaine, of Chesapeake Bay, Md., Mildred Browne of Arlington, Va., Nanthia Fleming and her husband, Leroy, and Lyvonne Frazier, all of Sweetwater, Myrtle Gilbert of Atlanta, Ga., and Ada Burke of Cleveland; and a brother-in-law, Larry Gilbert Wimberly and his wife, Barbara, of Oneida.
Also surviving are nieces and nephews Sylvia and Skippy Brinkman of Oak Ridge, Larris and Norene Boles of Tullahoma, Irene and Ben Scarbrough of Garland, Texas, Mark Garcia of Broadview, Ill., Darlene and Randy Johnston of Park Forest, Ill., Bill and Donita Mincey of Coal City, Ill., Bob Aspen of Matteson, Ill., Pam and Rick Johns of Talbott, Teresa and Donnie Smith of Nashville, Ruth and Art Woody of Fort Myers, Fla., William and Beth Ann Woody of Akron, Ohio, Shirley and Robert Mays and Jerry and Billy Burke, all of Cleveland, Charles and Nan Burke and Mitchell and Elissa Gilbert, all of Lawrenceville, Ga., Jesse and Linda Wimberly of Tellico Plains, Adele Browne Thayer of Ellicott, Md., Beverly and Stuart Browne of Arlington, Va., Donna and Jim Miller and Steve and Lisa Frazier, all of Sweetwater, Kevin Fleming of Texas, Annette and Tim Gilbert and Lori Dillard, all of Powder Springs, Ga., and Terry Wimberly of Springfield.
Mr. Evans is also survived by his cousin he considered a brother, Brian Rucker and his wife, Polly, of Livingston. He also considered his son-in-law Bobby Latham as a son, and his niece Sylvia Brinkman as a daughter.
Mary Jo Otten, Collen Gentry and Mary Ann Russell were his special secretaries and lifelong friends.
Relatives who died earlier are brothers-in-law Conway and Duggan Woody, Opal Taylor, Otto Boles and Bill Mincey, a cousin, Ray Evans Sr., sisters-in-law and other family members Beulah and Jimmy Thompson, Lou Wimberly, Mansel Frazier, Sonny Gllbert and Herb Browne; and grandnephews James Woody and Larry Burke.
The funeral will be held at 7 tonight, Feb. 10, at First Baptist Church, 1101 Oak Ridge Turnpike with the Rev. Larry Dipboye officiating. A time of fellowship will follow.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Crossville cemetery. Family and friends will meet at 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time at Burris Funeral Home in Crossville. Pallbearers are Mike Bradshaw, E.T. "Skippy" Brinkman, Jeffrey L. Day, Matthew A. Forester, Carl "Bubba" Scarbrough and Peter White. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Bibb, Bill Burgess, Dave Cope, Gordon Fee, B.B. Hopkins, Clyde Hopkins, Keith Kahl, Dave Mason, Harry Shatley and Charles Whittle.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 tonight at the church.

Janie Louise Hill Hatmaker, 63, of Andersonville, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Hatmaker was a member of Red Hill Baptist Church of Andersonville.
She was born in Union County on Feb. 15, 1934, the daughter of William and Rosalie Hill, both now deceased. She loved working with her flowers and enjoyed flowers of all kinds, her family said.
Mrs. Hatmaker is survived by her husband, Ulyles Hatmaker; three daughters, Tracy Braden of Clinton, Sharon Williams and her husband, Bill, of Heiskell, and Rita Ridenour and her husband, Dewane, of Andersonville; two sons, Brian Hatmaker and Wayne Hatmaker and his wife, Rhonda, all of Andersonville; two sisters, Evelyn Bullock of Lake City and Mary Ruth Jones and her husband, Fred, of Clinton; a brother, Jimmy Hill of Andersonville; and by eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Two other brothers, Charles Hill and Billy Clay Hill, died earlier.
The funeral was held Saturday night, Feb. 7, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Lonnie Dison, the Rev. Donnie Wallace and the Rev. Lee Kidwell officiating.
A graveside service was held Sunday, Feb. 8, at Red Hill cemetery in Andersonville.

Peggy J. Haynes, 51, of Oliver Springs, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at Briarcliff Health Care Center.
Mrs. Haynes was a resident of Oliver Springs. She was the daughter of George B. Jessee of Bristol. Her mother, Elizabeth Jessee, died earlier.
She was a Baptist.
In addition to her father, she is survived by a daughter, Nikki Miller of Oliver Springs; two grandsons, Aaron Miller and Logan Miller, both of Oliver Springs; a brother, Roger Jessee of Virginia Beach, Va.; a son-in-law, James A. Miller of Oliver Springs; a sister-in-law, Pat Jessee of Virginia Beach; and two nephews, Wade Jessee and Ty Jessee, both of Virginia.
No service will be held.

William H. Hildebrand
Former Oak Ridge resident
William H. Hildebrand of Clinton died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at Windwood Health & Rehabilitation Center in Clinton, where he had lived since 1983.
Mr. Hildebrand was a former resident of Oak Ridge and of Kingston.
He was born in Sharon, Pa., on Aug. 5, 1908, and was a graduate of Grove City College in Pennsylvania. Following graduation, he worked as an accountant at Youngstown Steel in Youngstown, Ohio.
In 1943, Mr. Hildebrand moved to Oak Ridge with the Manhattan Project as an accountant with Stone and Webster Corp. He was later employed by Fairchild Aviation and then joined Union Carbide Nuclear Corp. He became associate director of the Finance and Materials Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and later, director of the Finance and Materials Division at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant.
He was cited by the American Management Association for his contributions to the association for development of advanced management procedures.
Mr. Hildebrand served as chairman of the United Fund for Union Carbide and was president of the Anderson County Cancer Society. He was named a Boss of the Year at ORGDP. He retired in 1973.
He was a past exalted ruler of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1684 in Oak Ridge. After his retirement, he moved to Ten Mile, where he lived until entering the health care center.
Mr. Hildebrand is survived by his wife, Elsie "Peg" Hildebrand of Vorhees, N.J. ; three daughters, Jackie Searcy and her husband, Jarrell D., of Vorhees, Janice Santoro and her husband, Robert T., of Ismaning, Germany, and Karen Dalton of Cherry Hill, N.J.; six grandchildren, Michael Searcy of Dandridge, Mark Searcy of Mansfield, Ohio, Lori Santoro of Knoxville, Brian Dalton of Charlotte, N.C., Jason Dalton of Greensboro, N.C., and Jacob Levinson of Cherry Hill; and by four great-grandchildren, Cameron and Aaron Searcy, both of Dandridge, Lauren Searcy of Mansfield and Hanna Dalton of Charlotte.
The body was cremated. A private burial service was held, as Mr. Hildebrand had requested.

Laura D. Payne, 82, of Clinton, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Born Jan. 5, 1916, in McCreary County, Ky., she was the daughter of Joe and Hattie Long of Jellico, both now deceased.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Andersonville.
She was the widow of the Rev. Delbert Payne, pastor of Black Oak Baptist Church for several years. She worked as a nurse at Jellico Hospital before moving to Clinton in 1954, when her husband became the Black Oak pastor.
Mrs. Payne is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Lois and Larry Creekmore, Patsy and Bob Robbins and Totsy and Dennis Burress, all of Clinton; and a son and daughter-in-law, retired Lt. Col. Delbert G. and Betty Payne of Lynchburg; and two sisters, Maude Smith of Jellico and Hazel Stanfill of Cleveland.
She is also survived by seven grandchildren and their spouses, Bruce and Gina Creekmore and Wayne and Angie Burress, all of Clinton, Debbie and Jeff Pruitt of Louisville, Ky., Myra and Rick Keever of Johnson City, Kenney and Lori Payne of Denver, Colo., Sonya and David Parker of Powell, and Robert Robbins of Knoxville; seven great-grandchildren, Sarah Creekmore, Spencer Creekmore, Cresta Payne, Joey Parker, Mindy Parker, Travis Keever and Meredith Burress; and by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, Feb. 10, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton. The Rev. Mack Smith will officiate.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, at Grandview Memorial Garden in Clinton. Bruce Creekmore, Wayne Burress, Robert Robbins, David Parker, Rick Keever, Steven Payne and Mark Payne will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Laura Seal Repass, 95, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mrs. Repass was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
She was the widow of Lawrence Repass.
Mrs. Repass is survived by two daughters, Fern Trotterchaud and June Hendricks and her husband, Jim, all of Knoxville; five grandchildren, Larry Trotterchaud and his wife, Linda, Karen Aldridge and her husband, James, Mike Hendricks and his wife, Janice, Tony Hendricks and his wife, Julie, and Lisa Apley and her husband, Joel; and by eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by three sisters, Jane Sandbach and Ida Hipsher, both of Morristown, and Ann Haun of Knoxville; and a brother, Raymond Seal of Morristown.
A son-in-law, Maynard Trotterchaud, died earlier.

Dorothy Almeda Wood Vowell, 83, of Maryville, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Fairpark Nursing Home in Maryville.
Mrs. Vowell was a former resident of Oak Ridge. She was a member of Woodland Park Baptist Church and was very active at the Oak Ridge Senior Center when she lived here. She participated in the center's bowling leagues, arts and crafts activities and volunteer work and was also a member of its Ragtime Band.
She was born in Jellico on April 24, 1914, the daughter of William Rule and Lucy Mae Irwin Wood.
She was the widow of Paul E. Vowell Sr.
Mrs. Vowell is survived by two sons, Paul E. Vowell Jr. of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Ralph Vowell and his wife, Connie, of Maryville; a granddaughter, Kristy, of Johnson City; a grandson, Kevin, of Maryville; two sisters, Bessie Ridenour of Newport and Ammonee Miller of Lake City; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle Beets of Lake City and Daphene Bolton of Knoxville; and by several nieces and nephews.
