Glen T. Long, 54, of the Dutch Valley community, Clinton, died Friday, April 10, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Long is survived by his wife, Julia Smith Long; three children, April Pio and her husband, Donald, of Oliver Springs, and Amy Long and Jordan Long, both of Clinton; his mother, Oneida Jones Long of Clinton; and three grandchildren.
He is also survived by five sisters, Phyllis Davis and her husband, Jack, of Clinton, Vyreida Rice and her husband, Art, of Lenoir City, Sandra Jo Queener and her husband, Jerry, of Lake City, Brenda Lawhern and her husband, Jim, of Florence, Ala., and Pat Throwbridge and her husband, James, of Clinton; and two brothers, Levador Long and his wife, Anna Lou, of Chattanooga, and George Ray Long and his wife, Mary Sue, of Lake City.
The funeral was held Sunday, April 12, at First Dutch Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Thomas and the Rev. Tommy McCool officiating.
Burial followed at R.W. Long cemetery in Clinton.
Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City handled arrangements.
Arlene Amos Brown
Oliver Springs resident

Arlene Amos Brown, 61, of Oliver Springs, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville of cancer.
Mrs. Brown had lived in Oliver Springs since 1960.
She was born in Coal Creek, Tenn., on March 3, 1937, the daughter of Elsie "Peggy" Ward and Randall B. "R.B." Amos Sr., who are now deceased. She was a Baptist.
Mrs. Brown is survived by her husband, Robert H. Brown; a daughter, Linda D. Cagle and her husband, Charles "Chuck" Cagle, of Nashville; a son, Robert "Robin" G. Brown and his wife, Rosemary Brown, of Oak Ridge; and a granddaughter, Julie Anne Brown of Oak Ridge.
She is also survived by a sister, Bobbie Carter and her husband, Dennis, of Norfolk, Va.; three brothers, R.B. Amos Jr. and his wife, Mayciel, of Midland, Texas, Donnie Amos and his wife, Vickie, of Crossville, and Larry Amos and his wife, Carol, of Seneca Falls, N.Y.; and by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. William Brooks officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 11, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
E.B. Byrge
Retired coal miner

E.B. Byrge, 81, of Lake City, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Byrge was a retired coal miner and a U.S. Army veteran.
Mr. Byrge was a member and deacon at Graves Gap Baptist Church of Lake City and a member of the Briceville Masonic Lodge. Hunting and fishing were among his interests.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Louise Hatmaker Byrge; three daughters, Linda Davis and Judy Maiden and her husband, Nicky, all of Lake City, and Mary Lloyd and her husband, Darrell, of Clinton; and five sons, Gary Byrge and his wife, Tyra, of Caryville, and Larry Byrge, Michael Jason Byrge, Tommy Byrge and his wife, Margie, and Jackie Byrge and his wife, Greta, all of Lake City.
Mr. Byrge is also survived by his mother, Ailene Brown Byrge of Lake City; a sister, Nadine Braden and her husband, Louis, of Lake City; two brothers, Enoch Byrge and his wife, Fannie, and Donnie Byrge and his wife, Shirley, all of Lake City; his mother-in-law, Edna Mae Hatmaker of Lake City; and by 18 grandchildren and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
His father, Jessie Byrge, died earlier, as did two other brothers, Jessie Byrge and Michael Byrge.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at Graves Gap Baptist Church in Lake City with the Rev. Bill Bass and the Rev. Tommy Brown officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, June 8, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City. A Masonic service will be held at 8 in the chapel of the funeral home.
Wendell Carr Countess
Former ORHS teacher

Wendell Carr Countess, 59, of 12 Cooper Lane, died Saturday morning, June 6, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Countess taught English and history at Oak Ridge High School from 1966 until 1990. Later, he taught for three years at the Morgan County Regional Correctional Facility before retiring in July 1996.
He was born in Knoxville on July 11, 1938, the son of Wendell Claude and Ruth Carr Countiss, and came to Oak Ridge with his parents in 1943. His father, a construction engineer, is now deceased, and his mother lives in Norris.
Mr. Countess attended Cedar Hill, Elm Grove and Jefferson Junior High schools and graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1957.
His wife, Sylvia Shoemaker Countess, who survives him, is a teacher of foreign language at Oak Ridge High School. The couple met while they were students at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa.
Mr. Countess later graduated from the University of Tennessee and studied in the graduate program of St. John's College in Santa Fe, N.M., as well as at UT.
Mr. Countess was an active member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church of Oak Ridge. He had served on the Church Council, on the building, worshiping and fellowship committees and in the Sunday school.
He was a former president of the board of the Children's Museum of Oak Ridge and at one time was a member of the board of directors of both the American Civil Liberties Union and Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning.
Among his many interests were primitive tools and furniture, the Civil War, Appalachian history, art, literature, photography, miniatures and woodworking. He enjoyed traveling and helped organize and lead five trips to Europe for students and family.
In addition to his wife and his mother, Mr. Countess is survived by two sons, Jonathan Carr Countess, a graduate student at Columbia University, and Benjamin James Countess, a rising senior at Oak Ridge High School; a brother, Michael Countess, and his wife, Rebecca, and their daughters, Julie and Wendi, all of Hendersonville; and an aunt and uncle, Helen and Claude Thomason of Greenville, S.C., and their daughters, Claudia McCall of Greenville and Margaret Anne Allison of Pensacola, Fla.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Stephen Damos officiating. Burial will take place in Pennsylvania at a later date.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

Billie Edwin Rowland

Billie Edwin Rowland, 71, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Rowland was retired from Martin Marietta Energy Systems Inc. as a supervisor at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
He was born in Princeton, W.Va., on Aug. 12, 1926, the son of Arthur and Ida Lee Taylor Rowland. He had been an Oak Ridge resident since 1955, moving here from West Virginia.
Mr. Rowland was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church and had served the church as a deacon. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, hunting and woodworking, his family said.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Bridges Rowland; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Kent and her husband, Martin, of Decatur, Ala.; two brothers, Arthur Rowland Jr. and his wife, Effie, of Largo, Fla., and Donald Ray Rowland and his wife, Betty, of Chesapeake, Va.; one grandchild, Jeffery David Kent and his wife, Shana, of Chattanooga; and one great-grandson, Chad Martin.
The funeral was held Sunday night, June 7, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Charles E. Clark officiating. Deacons at Glenwood Baptist Church were honorary pallbearers.
A graveside service was to be held at 11 this morning, June 8, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

Lamar Suggs

Lamar Suggs, 52, of Cleveland, Tenn., died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at his home.
Mr. Suggs was a former resident of Clinton. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton and attended First Baptist Church of Cleveland.
He was a corporate director for Sonic Transportation and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Suggs is survived by his wife, Jo Harbuck Suggs; two daughters, Jill Suggs and Heather Suggs, both of Clinton; his mother, Jean Raby of Cleveland; a sister, Carol Cook and her husband, Mike, of Etowah; his mother-in-law, Ruth Harbuck of Dalton, Ga.; four brothers-in-law, Harold Evans and his wife, Anita, Hershel Wade and his wife, Betty, Sam Pullen and his wife, Virginia, all of Dalton, and Jim Harbuck and his wife, Beverly, of Snellville, Ga.; and by several nieces and nephews.
His father, James Suggs, is deceased.
The funeral was to be held at 11 this morning, June 8, in the chapel of Grissom Funeral Home in Cleveland with the Rev. Sam Dean of First Baptist Church of Clinton officiating.
A graveside service was to be held at 1 this afternoon at Whitfield Memorial Gardens in Cleveland.

Dixie Ragsdale Hicks
Former hospital, prison nurse

Dixie Ragsdale Hicks, 56, of 116 Arrowwood Road, died at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at her home of cancer.
Mrs. Hicks was a licensed practical nurse. She worked for 13 years at the Oak Ridge Hospital of the Methodist Church, now Methodist Medical Center, and retired from Brushy Mountain State Prison, where she had worked for 14 years. She was a member of the practical nurses' association.
She was born in Muscogee, Okla., on Sept. 11, 1941, the daughter of Dick and Hilda Ragsdale, both now deceased.
Mrs. Hicks was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. According to her family, she had very strong feelings for her church and a very strong faith and love for God and her family.
She loved sports, traveling, being with good friends and going to the beach, her family said.
Mrs. Hicks is survived by five children, James Hicks and his wife, Sherri, of Florida, Kathy Johnston and her husband, Kevin, of Crossville, and Kimberly Adamski and her husband, Kendal, Mark Hicks and his wife, Jennifer, and Michael Hicks and his wife, Ginger, all of Clinton.
She is also survived by three granddaughters, Amanda Lee Steelman, Markie Hicks and Katey Hicks; five grandsons, Jason Hicks, Markus Hicks, Whitley Hicks, Lane Johnston and Drew Johnston; four sisters, Jean McMillin of Michigan and Ann Ragsdale, Mona Williams and Marcie Freels, all of Oak Ridge; and three brothers, Mike Ragsdale of Georgia, Ed Ragsdale of Harriman and Doug Ragsdale of Oak Ridge.
Among her many friends was her former husband, Chester "Sonny" Hicks.
In addition to her parents, a grandson, Christopher Greene, and two brothers, Don Ragsdale and Raymond Ragsdale, died earlier.
The body was donated to science, as Mrs. Hicks had wished.
A memorial Mass will be held at noon Saturday, June 20, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael Woods officiating.

Geraldine Canada, 81, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge.

Dwight Harold Smith

Dwight Harold Smith, 86, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, June 16, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Smith had been a resident of Oak Ridge since 1943. He was an active member of First Baptist Church and had served as financial chairman of the church's first building program, as a deacon and as a Sunday school teacher and for many years was director of the AGAPE Center.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lavada Bacon Smith; two daughters, Carolyn Blankenship Roberts of Columbus, Ohio, and Linda Thomas of Brenham, Texas; two grandsons, Michael Blankenship and his wife, Dawn, of Columbus and Rob Blankenship and his wife, Gigi, of Jettersville, Va.; and four granddaughters, Wendy Averitt and family of Grand Prairie, Texas, Lindsay Thomas and Jodi Holloway and family, all of Brenham, and Sally Mahon and family of Amarillo, Texas; and by seven great-grandsons.
Mr. Smith is also survived by two sisters, Mary Louise Winton and her husband, Mel, of Oak Ridge, and Margaret Craddock and her husband, Louis, of Bowling Green, Ky.; a brother-in-law, C.E. Tilley of Oak Ridge; and nephews Tim Tilley and Ed Tilley and their families.
His parents died earlier, and his sister Ann Tilley died less than two weeks ago, on Sunday, June 7.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 19, at First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 20, at Hamblen cemetery in Lee County, Va.

Bertha Nichols
Former Oak Ridge teacher

Bertha Nichols, 92, died May 23, 1998, at the Taylor Manor Nursing Home in Versailles, Ky.
She was a teacher in the Oak Ridge schools in the city's early years. She taught second grade at Elm Grove Elementary School, which has since been closed.
After she retired, she returned to her hometown of Versailles. She would have been 93 on June 5.
