Ella Mae Simpson, 79, of Caryville, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Mariner Health Care of Norris.

Mrs. Simpson is survived by a son, Ray Simpson and his wife, Mary, of Clinton; two daughters, Nila Faye Simpson and Christine Housley and her husband, Haskle, all of Knoxville; two sisters, Mattie Pebley of Jacksboro and Lula Summers of LaFollette; and two brothers, Clarence Gross and Everett Gross, both of LaFollette.

The funeral will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, in the chapel of Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. James Simpson and Andy Browning officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Bakers-Forge cemetery in LaFollette.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Archie Hill
Retired coal miner, farmer

Archie Hill, 78, of Coalfield, died Sunday, March 1, 1998, at Briarcliff Health Care Center.

Mr. Hill was a retired coal miner and farmer. He also enjoyed raising cattle, gardening and raising flowers.

He was born in Coalfield on Dec. 7, 1919, the son of Allen and Mary Fry Hill, both now deceased.

Mr. Hill frequently visited people who were sick at their homes and in the hospital, his family said. He was a Baptist.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Eliza Tucker Hill; two daughters, Linda "Judy" Hill Olinger and her husband, William, and Rita Hill Reynolds and her husband, Lee Roy, all of Dayton, Ohio; and three sons, Glenn "Sonny" Hill and his wife, Alene, Douglas Hill and his wife, Beverly, and Larry Hill and his wife, Wanda, all of Dayton, Ohio.

Mr. Hill is also survived by grandchildren Tony Hill Cole, Betty Hill, Tina Hill, Ginger Reynolds Brandenburg and her husband, Joseph, Gary Hill and his wife, Cherri, Connie Hill Williamson and her husband, Mike, and Cynthia "Cindy" Reynolds and her fiance Matthew Harvey, all of Dayton; five great-grandchildren, Kayla, Brandon, Heather, Austin and Kassandra; and a cousin he considered special, Fletcher Reynolds and his wife, Edna, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Three brothers, Aaron "Buddy" Hill, Glenn Hill and Darwin Hill, and a nephew, Richard Hill, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, March 3, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs with the Rev. Ellis Patterson and the Rev. Mack Smith officiating.

A graveside service will be held at noon Wednesday, March 4, at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Olive T. Redmond
Mother of Oak Ridge resident

Olive Thrash Redmond, 82, of Oak Ridge, died today, March 3, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Redmond was the mother of Irene Purser of Oak Ridge.

She was born in Asheville, N.C., on June 11, 1915, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Milton Thrash.

Mrs. Redmond was a member of the Knoxville Church of Religious Science.

She was the widow of Harold B. Redmond Sr.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a son, Bruce Lee Redmond of Albuquerque, N.M.; a sister, Sara Miller of Charlotte, N.C.; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Her parents and a sister and a brother, Georgia Thrash and John Thrash, all died earlier.

A graveside service will be held at noon Wednesday, March 4, at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Clinton with the Rev. Jeffrey Proctor officiating.

Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton is handling arrangements.

Howard M. Garner Jr.
Former Oak Ridge resident

Howard M. Garner Jr., 40, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at the Alvin C. York Veterans Hospital in Murfreesboro after an extended illness.

Mr. Garner had lived in Oak Ridge before going to the veterans hospital.

He was born in Virginia on Jan. 20, 1958, the son of Virginia and Howard Garner, both now deceased.

Mr. Garner is survived by his son, James Garner of Oliver Springs; and four sisters, Jackie Newcomb of Alabaster, Ala., Vera Koenig of Fort Wayne, Ind., Janice Carson of Wilton, Ala., and Barbara Stapp of Lenoir City.

In addition to his parents, a sister, Glenna Garner Davis, and his grandmother, Ruby Taylor of Oliver Springs, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 27, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.

Burial will be Friday at Dutch Valley United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at the funeral home.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Developmental Office, 1924 Alcoa Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920.

Beulah White Harmon
Lake City resident

Beulah May White Harmon, 89, of Lake City, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Harmon is survived by two daughters, Anna Mae Jones and her husband, Robert Harold Jones, and Gloria Fay Burris and her husband, Charlie Benjamin Burris, all of Lake City; and by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 26, at Campbell Memorial Gardens in LaFollette with the Rev. Edwin Phillips officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, March 25, at Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Methodist Medical Foundation for Cancer, P.O. Box 2529, Oak Ridge, TN 37831.

Jessie Brummett Miller
New Salem Baptist member

Jessie Brummett Miller, 87, of Claxton, died Monday, March 23, 1998, at her daughter's home in Claxton.

Mrs. Miller was a former resident of Old Tacora Hills Road in Clinton and was a member of New Salem Baptist Church of Clinton.

She was born in Anderson County on July 10, 1910, the daughter of Charlie and Sarah Galbraith Brummett. She was the widow of Herman J. Miller.

Mrs. Miller is survived by two daughters, Shirley Sue Harber and her husband, Roy Lee Harber, of Claxton, and Wilma Adkins and her husband, Frank, of Clinton; and a brother, James J. Brummett and his wife, Naomi Brummett, of Clinton.

She is also survived by grandchildren Chris and Candi Harber, Belenda and Jason Crowley, Charlotte Burress, David and Tina Adkins, Michael Adkins and Rick Adkins and his fiancée, Renee Adams; great-grandchildren Stephen, Jessica, Jonathan, Matthew, Taylor, Chandler and Brandon; a sister-in-law, Alma Brummett of Oliver Springs; and by several nieces and nephews.

Ethel Bell of Clinton was considered a special friend.

Three sisters and a brother, Ruby Wilson, Edith Brummett, Grace Wilson and Clarence Brummett, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, March 25, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Joe Bridges officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 26, at McCarty Woodhaven Memorial Garden in Claxton. The nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Walter Daniel Richards
Lake City resident

Walter Daniel "W.D." Richards, 79, of Lake City, died Monday, March 23, 1998, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mr. Richards is survived by his wife, Christine Parker Richards; a daughter, Gwen Payne and her husband, Jim, of Clinton; a son, Danny Richards and his wife, Cindy, of Clinton; and a granddaughter.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, March 25, at First Baptist Church in Lake City with the Rev. Brian Courtney officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 26, at Sunset cemetery in Clinton. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons and members of the Pioneer New Hope Sunday school class.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the church.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 126, Lake City, TN 37769.

William J. Beckner
Retired ORNL fire captain

William J. Beckner, 90, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday morning, April 9, 1998, at Briarcliff Health Care Center.

Mr. Beckner retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division in 1972. At the time he retired he was a captain in the fire department at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

He was born in Knoxville on Nov. 19, 1907, the son of William Harrison and Seldon Lou Douthat Beckner.

He had been a member of First United Methodist Church since 1950 and was also a member of the Tennessee Law Enforcement Association.

Mr. Beckner's hobby was writing poetry, and he enjoyed bowling, his family said. In earlier years, he had enjoyed gardening with his wife, Agnes Davis Beckner. Mrs. Beckner died Oct. 11, 1986.

He is survived by three daughters, DeLois Pugh of Clinton, Jo Brewer of Oak Ridge and Margaret Eckerd and her husband, George W. Eckerd, of Knoxville; four grandchildren, Tim Stephens of Clinton, Shana Brewer and Mike Brewer, both of Oak Ridge, and Mark Arnold of Knoxville; and five great-grandchildren, Joseph Stephens and Thomas Stephens, both of Clinton, Emily Arnold and Erin Arnold, both of Knoxville, and Brittany Brewer of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Beckner's two sisters and five brothers died earlier.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Ken Henderlight officiating.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight, April 10, at Weatherford Mortuary.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to First United Methodist Church, 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

King Walter Hanks
Former Oak Ridge resident

King Walter Hanks, 87, a resident of Chattanooga and a former resident of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, April 9, 1998, at a nursing home in Chattanooga.

Mr. Hanks was retired from Union Carbide Nuclear Division. He had been employed at the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant as part of the Manhattan Project.

He was born in West Tennessee on July 25, 1910.

Mr. Hanks is survived by a daughter, Judy Hanks Eiselstein of Chattanooga; two sons, Patrick Hanks of Columbia, S.C., and J.L. Hanks of Huntington, Tenn.; and by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

His wife, Mary Hanks, died earlier.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at Mount Hermon cemetery in Savannah, Tenn.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Big Brothers/Big Sisters Association of Chattanooga, 2015 Bailey Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37404.

West Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home is handling arrangements. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Edith Eller Jarvis
Retired SCB employee

Edith Eller Jarvis, 92, of Clinton, died Wednesday, April 8, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Jarvis had retired after 30 years of service with South Central Bell.

She was born in Grainger County on March 8, 1906, the daughter of Reuben and Susan Elizabeth Eller. She was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Clinton.

She was the widow of Charles W. Jarvis.

Mrs. Jarvis is survived by several nieces and nephews, Jack Crigger of Chattanooga, Betty C. Brewster of Oak Ridge, Maxine C. Stinnett of Daytona Beach, Fla., Donald Eller Crigger of Dayton, Ohio, Elizabeth McGriff of Gainesville, Fla., and Marie Davis of Rogersville.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 11, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Lee Cate and the Rev. John Clark officiating.

Burial will be Saturday at Liberty Hill cemetery in Grainger County.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 tonight, April 10, at the funeral home.
