The Rev. C. Merrill Woodson
Father of Clinton resident

The Rev. C. Merrill Woodson, 65, of 1028 James St., Bluefield, W.Va., died Friday, Aug. 21, 1998, in Bluefield.

Mr. Woodson was the father of Christy Woodson of Clinton.

He was born in Farmville, Va., on Sept. 16, 1932. He entered the ministry in 1956 and ventured to churches and mission points in Massachusetts, Iowa and throughout Virginia.

Mr. Woodson completed his education at Lancaster College of Bible and Theology in Lancaster, Pa., in 1960, and graduated from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., in 1967.

While most of his career was spent in Virginia, he also did service with Home and Rescue Missions in Boston and later served two years with the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention in Iowa.

Mr. Woodson's pastorates in Virginia included Midway Baptist in Amherst; Liberty Baptist and Slate Hill, both in Charlottesville; Fluvanna Baptist in Scottsville; Mentow Baptist in Huddleston; Riverside Baptist in Chilhowie; Greenfield Baptist in Meadowview; Reedy Spring Baptist in Stout Spring; and Austinville Baptist in Austinville.

Upon his retirement in 1997, Mr. Woodson served as interim pastor at Northfork Baptist Church in Northfork, W.Va. At the time of his death, he was a member of Bluefield Community Church in Bluefield, W.Va.

In addition to his daughter, Mr. Woodson is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ramona Ray Woodson; three sons, Buddy Woodson and his wife, Lois, of Scottsville, Bruce Woodson and his wife, Jewel, of Bluefield, Va., and Brian Woodson of Johnson City; and four grandchildren, April and Dale Woodson of Scottsville and Lauren and Ryan Woodson of Bluefield.

He is also survived by his mother, Margie Woodson Manis; three sisters, Flora Bolt, Jean Thompson and Katherine Woodson; and two brothers, Robert Woodson and Garland Woodson.

His father, Wallace Woodson, died earlier.

The funeral was to be held at 11 this morning, Aug. 24, in the chapel of Dudley Funeral Home in Bluefield, Va., with the Rev. Rolen Bailey and the Rev. Mike Baker officiating.

A graveside service was to be held at 3 this afternoon at Greenfield Baptist Church cemetery in Meadowview with the Rev. Jim Cumbow officiating.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Bluefield Community Church, P.O. Box 330, Bluefield, WV 24701.

Maggie Fisher
New Hope Baptist member

Maggie Fisher, 79, of Lake City, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Fisher was a member of New Hope Baptist Church of Lake City.

She had worked as a cook for several area restaurants. She was the widow of Robert Lee Fisher.

Born in Anderson County, she was the daughter of John and Nora Foust Goodman, who are now deceased.

Mrs. Fisher is survived by her daughters, Wilma Fisher of Lake City and Ann Brooks and her husband, Lamar, of Lexington, S.C.; her son, Kyle Goodman and his wife, Sandra, of Lake City; her sister, Ruby Reynolds of Clinton; grandchildren Steve Fowler and his wife, Beth, Richard Fowler, Charlie Goodman, Shari Brooks, Veronica Goodman and Joshua Goodman; a great-granddaughter, Madelyn Fowler; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Three sisters and a brother died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at New Hope Baptist Church in Lake City with the Rev. George Miller officiating.

Burial will follow at Oak Grove cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, Sept. 3, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Lake City.

Steven Philip Hines
Husband of former resident

Steven Philip Hines, 43, of Sarasota, Fla., died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998, in Sarasota.

Mr. Hines was the husband of Ivy Potter Hines, a former resident of Oak Ridge.

He was born Sept. 12, 1954, in Atlanta, Ga., and moved to Sarasota seven years ago from Atlanta. He was a theater actor and writer and had organized plays involving the audience with the troupe, including "Murder for Hire" and "Unexpected Events."

In addition to his wife, Mr. Hines is survived by his daughter and son, Tonya and Joshua Hines, both of Atlanta; and two sisters and three brothers.

A memorial service was held Friday, Sept. 4, at Romaine-Sarasota Funeral Home.

Mildred Marlow Jones
Former area resident

Mildred Marlow Jones, 66, of Erin, Tenn., died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Trinity Hospital in Erin.

Mrs. Jones was a former resident of this area. She was born in Campbell County on Aug. 25, 1932, the daughter of Charlie and Grace Cox Marlow.

She had worked as a greeter at Wal-Mart. Mrs. Jones enjoyed gardening, quilting and fishing, the family said.

She is survived by three daughters, Karen Pearson and Lisa Parker, both of Clinton, and Angela Tabb of Erin; five sons, Randall Jones of Knoxville, Bruce Jones of New Tazewell, Timothy Jones of Olean, N.Y., and Brad Jones and Darrell Jones, both of Clinton; her sister, Opal Gamble of Kingston; two brothers, Charles Marlow of Clinton and Bill Marlow of Kingston; and by 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary.

Burial will be at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Sept. 15, at the mortuary.

Xen 'Red' Raines
Owned Solway Exxon

Xen "Red" Raines, 74, of Solway, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Raines was the owner of the Solway Exxon.

He is survived by two daughters, Yvonne Leffew and her husband, Howard, of Solway, and Susan Burleson and her husband, Kerry, of Johnson City; and five sons, John Raines and his wife, Arlene, Ray Raines and his wife, Janie, Donald Raines and his wife, Donna, and Dewayne Raines and his wife, Angela, all of Knoxville, and Phil Raines and his wife, Linda, of Morristown.

Mr. Raines is also survived by his niece and nephew, Joanna Jones and Claude Jones; and by 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

His wife, Mary Owena Raines, died earlier.

A graveside service will be held at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Mickey Leffew officiating.

Friends may call at their convenience at the home of Yvonne Leffew or at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel, 6200 Kingston Pike, Knoxville.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Methodist Regional Cancer Center, Methodist Foundation, 990 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Anna Ruth Pyles Irwin
Mount Pleasant Methodist member

Anna Ruth Pyles Irwin, 76, of Andersonville, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Mariner Health Care of Norris.

Mrs. Irwin was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church of Andersonville.

She was born in Andersonville on Sept. 17, 1921, the daughter of O.G. and Nancy Pyles.

She was a homemaker and enjoyed listening to music, her family said.

She was the widow of James Willard Irwin.

Mrs. Irwin is survived by a sister, Willie Hunley of Andersonville; and by a niece, two nephews and several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Two other sisters, Mossie Sharp and Minnie Simmons, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Andersonville, with the Rev. Ken Abbott and the Rev. George Buchanan officiating.

Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight, Feb. 18, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton.

Georgia Leach
Georgia Leach, 82, of Lake City, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City is handling arrangements, which were incomplete this morning.

Lucille Brasel Jones
Morgan County resident

Lucille Brasel Jones, 94, of Wartburg, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at the Life Care Center of Morgan County.

Mrs. Jones was a homemaker and the widow of Sam E. Jones.

She was the daughter of Perry and Myrtle Love Brasel, who are deceased.

Mrs. Jones is survived by her daughter, Regina Wilson and her husband, Gerald, of Nashville; two grandchildren, Kim Schafer of Nashville and Doug Schafer of Kissimmee, Fla.; a great-grandson, Devin Schafer; and two sisters, Muriel Newberry and Mable Howard, both of Wartburg.

In addition to her husband and her parents, her brother, Glen Brasel, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8 tonight, Aug. 13, in the chapel of Schubert Funeral Home in Wartburg with the Rev. Waylan Payne Jr. officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at the Liberty cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Margaret Daniels West
North Carolina resident

Mrs. West is survived by seven children, Katherine Scarborough of Georgetown, S.C., Gordon West and his wife, Carol, of Sunrise, S.C., Burt West and his wife, Carmen, of Dade City, Fla., Joy Estrella of Springfield, Va., Dianna Peschke and her husband, Gunter, of Waynesville, Helen Mapes of Orlando, Fla., and Jack West and his wife, Mary, of Houston, Texas; her daughter-in-law, Margaret West of Bremen, Ga.; and by three sisters, Mae Sparkman of Hopewell, Va., Mary Sparkman of Richland, Va., and Betty McKnight of California.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Leach cemetery in Lake City with the Rev. Don Martin officiating.

Cox-Martin Funeral Home in Lake City is handling arrangements.

June Johnston Neely
Sister of Oak Ridge resident

June Johnston Neely, 68, of Mobile, Ala., died Tuesday morning, Sept. 8, 1998, in Mobile.

Mrs. Neely's brother, R.C. Johnston Jr., and his wife, Mattie, are Oak Ridge residents.

She was a native of McMinn County and a former resident of Etowah. She was the daughter of Cullie Elizabeth Johnston of Etowah and Roy Chestley Johnston Sr., who is deceased.

Mrs. Neely had lived in Mobile for the past 27 years. She was a self-employed accountant and operated Neely Business Service in Mobile.

She was a member of Overlook Presbyterian Church in Mobile and a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She was the widow of William Ledford Neely.

In addition to her brother, sister-in-law and her mother, Mrs. Neely is survived by her niece and nephew, Debbie Russell and her husband, Robbie, and Tim Johnston and his wife, Tina, all of Oak Ridge; a grandniece and two grandnephews, Jessica Russell, Kaleb Russell and Matthew Johnston, also Oak Ridge; and by several aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral will be at 8:30 tonight, Sept. 10, in the south chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home in Etowah with the Rev. David Furlough and Jeff Clendenen officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Green Hill cemetery in Etowah.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Margaret Josephine Potter
Heiskell resident

Margaret Josephine Potter, 71, of Heiskell, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Potter was born in Rockwood on June 22, 1927, the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Cordelia Elizabeth Hamilton. She was a homemaker and the widow of the Rev. Leaton Monroe Potter.

She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio.

Mrs. Potter is survived by her son, Larry Potter of Heiskell; two sisters, Mildred Williams of Heiskell and Wilma Ferraro of Tampa, Fla.; and by several nieces and nephews.

Another sister, Audrey Lewis, and two brothers, James Hamilton and Jeff Hamilton Sr., died earlier.

The funeral will be at 8:30 tonight, Sept. 10, in the chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. Jeff Hamilton Jr., and the Rev. Fred Johns officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Sartin cemetery in Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
