Frances Alsmiller
ORNL physicist

Record dated at 2:33 p.m.
on Friday, February 6, 1998

Frances Alsmiller, 69, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 4, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge from heart failure related to complications of diabetes. She had been in poor health for a some time.

Mrs. Alsmiller was born in Lakewood, Wis. She moved with her family to a small town near Gary, Ind., after her father lost his farm during the Depression and found work in the steel mills.

She received her bachelor's degree from Purdue University, where she and her husband, Tut Alsmiller, who survives her, met while working together as laboratory assistants. After receiving their master of science degrees from Purdue, they completed graduate work for their doctorates in physics at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

The husband and wife team were subsequently hired by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where she worked intermittently in the Applied Physics Group between 1957 and 1993, when she took semi-retirement.

Mrs. Alsmiller's diabetes, which began in her college days, caused many unwelcome interruptions in her career, but her work always remained of paramount importance to her, according to her family, who said that even before her final hospitalization, she was careful to tell her husband exactly where he could find her research records.

Her other strong interests were art, music, literature and people.

Having no children of her own, Mrs. Alsmiller enjoyed spending time with her grandnieces and grandnephews and often wished for more opportunities to be with them, her family said.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her brother, Dr. Ed Shipley of Indianapolis, Ind., and two cousins, six nieces and nephews and nine grandnieces and grandnephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at United Church, Chapel on the Hill. Mrs. Alsmiller's Unitarian minister, the Rev. Don Beaudreault, will officiate, as construction at the Unitarian Church prevents holding services there.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the American Diabetes Association, Roane/Anderson Chapter, P.O. Box 7037, Oak Ridge, TN 37831.

Weatherford Mortuary is handling arrangements.
