She was born Nov. 21, 1914, in Harriman, Tenn., was retired from Krogers on Middlebrook Pike in January 2001, and was a member of Sugar Grove Valley Baptist Church. ADKINS, REVEREND KELLEY S. - age 89 of Maynardville, passed away after a lingering illness on Sunday, July 1, 2001 at St. Mary's Residential Hospice. Rev. Adkins pastored churches in Briceville, Heiskell and Cleveland, Tenn. and was a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church in Luttrell. He received his 50 years pin in January as a member of the J.C. Baker Masonic Lodge #720 F&AM. He was a retired employee from the Knoxville US Post Office, and since his retirement, he enjoyed the fellowship of the Union County Senior Center. The son of the late J.B. and Martha J. Adkins. He is survived by wife, Ruby Owen Adkins; son and daughter in law, Keith and Lynn Adkins, Maynardville; son, Ralph Adkins, Nashville; granddaughter, Carrie Tolliver, Maynardville; brother, Vesco Adkins, Luttrell. BLEIER, STEPHEN J. - age 85, of Knoxville, died peacefully Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Shannondale Health Care Center. He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church and a former member of the Board of Directors. He retired as Manager of Quality Control-Plexiglass, Knoxville, from Rohm & Haas Company, after more than 47 years of loyal service. This was a worldwide company record. He was a member of the American Society of Quality Control, the Knights of Columbus, and a member of the former Deane Hill Country Club. Mr. Bleier was a longtime patron of the Masters, a dedicated golfer and an avid baseball fan. He is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy McElroy Bleier. Survivors: daughter, Arline S. BABCOCK, JENNY RUTH - age 68, passed away Friday, June 15, 2001, at the Fort Walton Beach Hospital in Florida, after a brief illness. Jenny was a 1951 graduate of Knoxville High School, and was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, where she was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Her work life was spent in Long Island, New York, where she was employed as an Educational Librarian. After retirement, she lived in Knoxville for a time, and then moved to Destin, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, J. C. Babcock and Eunice Foster Babcock, and by brother, James C. Babcock, Jr. She is survived by numerous aunts and cousins of the Babcock, Foster and Creekmore families. CHISAM, FREDRICK MARTIN - age 72 of Farragut, formerly of Athens, Tullahoma and McMinnville, passed away early Monday morning July 2, 2001 at U.T. Medical Center. Fred was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church. He was draftsman with T. V. A. until his retirement. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving in the Army Signal Corp. Fred was a graduate of Tennessee Tech. He was an avid Tennessee sports fan. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, William and Maple Martin Chisam; sister, Wilma Chisam Ferguson. CIFERS, ROBERT G. "BOBBY" - age 80, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, July 1, 2001, at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, following a brief illness. Born in West Carters Valley, he was raised in Kingsport. He was a 1940 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School, where he began a legendary athletic career. He was a two-time national scoring champion in football and was recently recognized as the Athlete of the Century by TSSAA in Track and Field. From 1941 to 1943 Bobby was a standout running back and punter for the University of Tennessee and led them to victory in the 1943 Sugar Bowl over Tulsa. He was inducted into the U. S. Army Air Corp., where he served from 1943-1946. He was a first-round draft choice of the Detroit Lions, and during his rookie season, Bobby set a single-game punting average record that stands today. He went on to play with the Pittsburgh Steelers and would end his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers. After football, he was Vice-President of Cifers Construction Company in Chattanooga, Tenn. Prior to his retirement he was a real estate appraiser in Chattanooga. In 1985, Bobby was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and in 1988 was inducted as a charter member of the Northeast Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Cifers was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Virginia Gilley Cifers, a daughter, Cathy Cifers; parents, Robert E. and Manie Rose Epperson Cifers; brothers, Bill and George Cifers, and a sister, Gertrude Cifers Peele. Surviving are a son, William E. Cifers and wife Karen of Elizabethton, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Christopher and Kaylee Cifers of Elizabethton, and Samantha Pritchett of Punta Gorda, Florida; one great-granddaughter, Emma Pritchett; two sisters, Laura Lucille Roller of Kingsport, Winifred Byrnes of Rochester, New York; one brother, Ed Cifers and wife Catherine of Knoxville, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Marguerite Edmunds of Ooltewah, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews, close friends, Ralph Morton of Ooltewah, Tenn., and Tom Williams of Kingsport, and a very dear and special friend, Libby Halliburton of Clarksville, Tenn.
