CARTER, JOE V., JR. - age 82 of Knoxville, passed away Saturday April 21, 2001 at his home after a lingering illness. He was born on September 28, 1918 in Rogersville, Tenn. Mr. Carter was of the Baptist faith and had a strong belief in Christ. He also enjoyed listening to gospel music. Mr. Carter served during World War II with the US Army attaining the rank of Sergeant. He retired after 45 years of dedicated service with Cincinnati Cordage & Paper Company. Preceded in death by his mother, Martha E. Lawson Carter; his father, Joe V. Carter, Sr.; his sisters, Barbara Jean Rutherford and Almeada Miller; also his wife, June Douglas Carter who passed away on May 27, 2000 after 53 years of marriage. He is survived by sons, Allen Carter of Greeneville, Tenn., Robert (Bobby) Carter, Knoxville; daughter and son in law, Gail and Johnny King, Farragut; grandchildren, Dereck and Crystal Carter; step grandson, Jonathan King; brother and sister in law, Carl and Naomi Carter, all of Knoxville. NEWPORT, MR. GARLAND, SR. - age 83, departed this life Monday April 23, 2001 at the Roane Medical Center in Harriman. He was born November 26, 1917 in Scott County to the late Delus and Ida Bell Newport. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Erman and Earl; sisters, Fena, Olith, Celia and 2 infant sisters. Garland was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp. He worked for many years at Yankee Lumber Company in Harriman. THATCHER, IVA RECTOR - age 78, of Oak Ridge, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2001, after a lengthy illness. She was born December 12, 1922, in Saltville, Va., the daughter of Herbert and Laura Enscore Rector. Mrs. Thatcher was a homemaker and member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Mrs. Thatcher had worked as a volunteer with hospice, the Anderson County Association of Retarded Children and the Tennessee Association of Retarded Citizens. She had previously served on the Board of Directors of Greene Valley Development Center, and was founder and volunteer director of a camp established for retarded children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Vincent Thatcher - August 26, 1995, and by a brother, Ralph. Mrs. Thatcher is survived by son, Karl Thatcher and wife, Tammy of Clinton; daughters, Laura Loretta Lewis of Pigeon Forge and Hilda DeSha and husband Don of Harriman; brothers, Harold Rector and wife Frances of Kingsport, Herbert Rector and wife Sherry of Charlotte, N.C., Roscoe Rector and wife Lana of Glade Springs, Va., and Raymond Rector and wife Virginia of Jonesborough; sisters, Sible Hayden and husband Roy of Saltville, Va., Bygie Price and husband Bob of Glade Springs, Va., and Frances Harris of Bristol, Va.; four grandchildren, Gary Joseph Mullins, Jessica Joel Lewis, Lea Anna Rogers and Molly Beth Thatcher. SMITH, HUBERT HICKMAN "DOC" - age 89, of Lenoir City, passed away at Fort Sanders Park West Hospital on Monday, April 23, 2001. He was born in Lenoir City on December 3, 1911. He belonged to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Lenoir City, where he served as deacon, elder, trustee, and choir director for many years. He was a past member of the Lion's Club of Lenoir City, and the early Lenoir City Flying Club. He was a self-taught composer of gospel music and teacher of rudiments (shaped notes). Among his published songs, the most well-known is, "My Lord Keeps a Record," published in 1945. He founded and was a member of the Sacred Singers Gospel Quartet. He was a tail-dragger pilot and part owner of a J-5 Cub. Some of his interests were Latin, sign language, electronics, and operating a "ham" radio. He retired from Charles H. Bacon Company and Yale and Towne Lock Company, and was a licensed insurance adjuster. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rosa Belle and Elmer Joseph Smith, Sr.; two brothers, Leonard Ray and Elmer "E.J." Joseph Smith, Jr., and one grandson, Douglas Allan Dean. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Stewart Smith; two daughters, Patricia Gail Needham of Knoxville, and Beverly Dean and son-in-law, Dr. Roger Dean of Morgantown, Ind.; three grandsons, Brian Stewart Dean of Garland, Texas, Richard Henri "Brando" Marius of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Frederick Stewart Marius and wife, Susan and great-grandchildren, Ellen Patricia and Henri Richard Marius of Winchester, Mass.
