HARNED, WILLIAM LOYS - age 79, passed away after an extended illness, Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. "Bill" will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was born in Parrotsville, Tenn., in 1921, and was raised in Strawberry Plains, where he attended Rush Strong School. He served during World War II, with the United States Eighth Air Force, 385th Bomb Group, as a Tail Gunner in a B-17, and successfully completed 29 Air Combat Missions, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross, while proudly serving his country. After the war, he attended and graduated from Denver University, Denver, Colo., with a Business degree. He was a gentleman farmer and for years greatly enjoyed his farm activities and regular "campouts" with his family and close friends. Bill was employed as a College Textbook Representative with Prentice-Hall, Inc. for 39 years until his retirement. Upon moving to Knoxville in 1957, from Denver, Colo., Bill and family joined St. Mark United Methodist Church, where he taught an Adult Sunday School Class for approximately 40 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Cox Bailey and stepfather, Lonas Edgar Bailey of Strawberry Plains. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Helen; children and grandchildren: Doug and Mary Jane Harned and their children, Dean and Elizabeth of Knoxville, Craig and Virginia Harned and their children, Bailey and Hannah of Powell, Holly Harned Stephens and her children, Celia and Miles of Union, Ky. He is also survived by sister, Jean Neil of Knoxville; two brothers, Ed Bailey of Knoxville and James "Hop" Bailey of Atlanta, Ga. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of the 8th and 9th Floor West at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center for their special care and kindness. A Celebration of Bill Harned's Life will be held Friday at 6 p.m. at St. Mark United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends after the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. PAGE, JANET BALLINGER - age 86, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Shannondale Health Care Center. She was born October 19, 1914, in Walnut, Kansas, and was a graduate of the College of Emporia. She married
John C. Page, Jr. on April 30, 1939, in Junction City, Kansas. Dr. and Mrs. Page served Second Presbyterian Church, where he was senior minister from 1962 through 1975. Prior to moving to Knoxville, they served churches in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Montana. She was a member of the Knoxville Athene Circle and P.E.O. She was preceded in death by her husband, and her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Robert J. Ballinger. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy P. Thomas and her husband, Tom Thomas, her son, Bob Page and his wife, Marnie and by grandchildren, Kimberly H. Coleman, Kathy H. Davis, Kristen L. Harlow, Allison E. Page, and Margaret H. Page, and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 16, 2 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church with Dr. Arnold Lovell and the Rev. Nancy Acree officiating. SIMMONS, HATTIE JUANITA MADDOX - most beloved wife and mother, age 75, went to be with our Lord on Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Fort Sanders Parkwest Medical Center, ending her heroic battle with Multiple Myeloma. She was an active member of Second Baptist Church of Knoxville until her illness. She graduated from Claiborne County High School and attended the University of Tennessee. She had retired from a successful career as a professional nurse and many years of property rentals. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Margaret Cheatham Maddox; six sisters, Zellar Neely, Ruth Harmon, Dante Butler, Flora McBee, Ellen Wyatt, and Arene Wyatt; four brothers, Odie, Horace, Glen and Lawrence Maddox. She is survived by her devoted family, husband of 53 blessed years, C. L. Simmons, Sr. , and their two children, Dr. Carl Simmons, Jr. and wife Nancy of Knoxville, SuzAnne S. Deacon and husband John of Chattanooga; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Lee Ann Simmons; sisters, Ruby Hughes, Lorine Davis and Elsie Hodges; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and a host of good friends. THOMPSON, HAZEL PRIDE - age 95, of Alcoa died Thursday April 5 at Maryville Health Care Center. She was preceded in death by husband, Robert Lee Thompson; her parents, Bessie Howard Pride and James Edward Pride; daughters, Delia Faye Thompson and Judith Elizabeth Lytle. She is survived by her son, Col. Jack Thompson and daughter, Mrs. Bessie Skipper; eight grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are two devoted sons in law, Mr. Johnny Skipper and Mr. George Lytle and a devoted daughter in law, Mrs. Marilyn Thompson and many devoted cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
