MADDEN, JOHN "SUNSHINE" KENNETH - age 65 of Knoxville, died at 9:40 p.m. February 8, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospice. Member of St. James Episcopal Church. John "Sunshine" came into this world wide--eyed in amazement at what he saw as everyone's sunbright opportunities, and grinning at the promises the world seemed to make to him personally. He wandered Knoxville and coast to coast, north and south, seeking the American dream. He was an American innocent, whose dark moments arose out of surprise and shock at the realities of life. But the convictions of his dreams were constantly renewed by his faith in God, himself and in his fellow man, as he threw all his hopes, energy, intelligence, emotions, and his thunder and laughter into helping sick and impoverished children and old folks. Whether on the open roads of America or the streets of Knoxville, he not only responded to pleas for help, he sought out people in need--in floods, hurricanes, poverty, prison, hospitals. He thrived on the thrill of rescue. He stood out in great causes--The March of Dimes--but he created causes--the Sunshine Kids. For two decades, one of his major causes--as the city council, newspapers, and television archives will show---was to make Gay Street Bridge safe for all citizens, his niece having died in a crash on the icy bridge. Final justice would be a safe bridge, renamed the Sunshine Bridge. He wrote letters to the newspaper in memorable phrases, but he was a man of action, going straight to the Mayor, the governor, the president. Living on social security, he ran in the last mayorial campaign and an earlier one, so he could put democracy into action. His noblest achievement perhaps was to have been the sole caregiver of his mother for over ten years. We will not see his like again. But be of good cheer--we will thrive always on his spirit. Preceded in death by mother and father, Emile and James Madden, and grandmother; Jesse Rudd. Survived by brothers, James Richard Madden and Jerry David Madden; niece, Cheryl Patterson; nephew, Gregory Madden; other nieces and nephews; special friends, Katherine and Jeff Hughett. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Stevens Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Joseph Ballard officiating. Interment
to follow at Lynnhurst cemetery. Pallbearers: Greg Madden, Jerry David Madden, Blake Madden, and Roy Griffin. Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospice, 7447 Andersonville Pike, Knoxville, Tenn. 37938. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Stevens Mortuary, Oglewood at Broadway.
