THOMAS, CHARLES EDWARD (TOMMY) - age 74, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, September 20, 1999, at his daughters home in Knoxville. A member of the Church of Christ and a US Naval Veteran. Mr. Thomas was a retired route manager for the Knoxville Journal. Son of the late Floyd and Lavonia Spence Thomas, he is survived by his daughters, Sheila Riggs of Knoxville and Gretchen Griggs of Powell; and son, Dan Edmunds of South Carolina; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Honorary pallbearers will be Rob Edmunds, Ray Riggs, William Riggs, and George Wright. Interment
services will be held Wednesday, September 22, 1999, at East Tennessee Veterans cemetery with Phillip W. Adams officiating along with the Volunteer State Honor Guard. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery at 9:45 a.m. McCarty Mortuary, 4004 Holston Dr., in charge of arrangements.
TOWNSEND, RUTH JEANETTE BOWMAN - age 87, of Knoxville, died Tuesday, September 21, 1999, at Shannondale Nursing Home. Member of the Childress Street Mission for many years. She loved to attend church and sing until she became ill. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Townsend; and her precious sons, James, Bobby, and Harrison; sister, Carlotta Goode. CAMPBELL, DEAN CARL - age 62, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Monday, September 27, 1999, at the St. Mary's Residential Hospice Center in Halls. He was preceded in death by his parents, Desmond Earl Campbell and Sally Mae Landnum Campbell. Survivors: wife, Jacqueline Brewer Campbell of Oliver Springs; children, Patrick Campbell of Marysville, Wash., Lisa Campbell Conforti and husband, John of Simi Valley, Calif., Annie Campbell of Simi Valley, Calif., Daniel Campbell of Simi Valley, Calif., Victoria Campbell of Oliver Springs; grandchildren, Cassandra Alexander, Chris Alexander, Shaina Conforti, Joel Conforti, Chris Conforti; sisters, Diana Dale Pringle of Michigan, Delcy Adkisson and husband, Garnett of Stevens, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews also survive; special friends, Robert and Tommie Bolden, Alene Stooksbury, Myra and Phillip Russell, Lois (GeGe) Neff, Dovie Patterson, Juanita and Charlie Blasingame. Mr. Campbell was born February 19, 1937, in Richmond, Va. He had lived in Oliver Springs for the last five years. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Campbell was a flight mechanic for Pan-Am Airlines for 23 years and was on the board of commissioners for the Oliver Springs Housing Authority. No funeral services will be held.
DAVIS, VIOLA M. - age 71, of Lowell, Mich., went to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 22, 1999. She was preceded in death in 1997 by her husband, Shirley H. Davis. She is survived by her children, Gary and Mary Lou Davis, Marcia and Wayne Outen, Mark and Lisa Davis; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill and Iva Davis of North Carolina, Crave and Lotus Davis of Florida, Clay and Mary Davis of Tennessee, Mrs. Lois Heidel of Tennessee, Ken Davis of Tennessee; several nieces and nephews. GARLINGTON, BARBARA BRUFF - age 73, of Knoxville, passed away Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin J.D. and Lal B. Bruff. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and elder and was active in the Presbyterian Women. She attended Knoxville High School and graduated from St. Mary's School, Raleigh, N.C. and the University of Tennessee. After graduation, she was employed as a reporter in the Knoxville Journal Society Dept. In later years she was employed to edit the employees news letter at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center, where she subsequently became director of public affairs. She was a member of the Chi Omega Fraternity, Knoxville Junior League, Girl's Cotillion Club and the Reading Club. She is survived by husband, W. Conway Garlington; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and John Palmer; sons and daughters-in-law, Benjamin C. and Susan Garlington, Thomas B. and Sandy Garlington, all of Knoxville, Joseph E. (Ned) and Anna Garlington of Casablanca, Morocco; 10 grandchildren; sister, Mary Helen (Tappy) Jerden of Columbia, S.C. A memorial service will be held 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. G. Carswell Hughs and Dr. G. Douglas Slagle officiating. HATCHER, CHARLES HENRY - age 70, of Cookeville, Tenn., died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at St. Thomas Hospital, Nashville. He was born July 2, 1929, in Knoxville. He was retired from Orgill Brothers as wholesale hardware salesman in Putnam and in eight surrounding counties. He was a veteran serving in the US Army Korean War. Member of VFW and Friendship United Methodist Church in Cookeville, formerly Parkview. Preceded in death by parents, William Aaron and Anne Elizabeth (McCarter) Hatcher; sister, Kathleen Lantz. MEACHAM, STERLING ARDEL "SAM" - age 59, of Knoxville, died Friday, September 24, 1999, after suffering a heart attack. Born December 6, 1939, in Hopkinsville, Ky. He spent his early years in Detroit, Mich. and graduated from Wayne State University. He came to the East Tennessee area to work with the Oak Ridge National Laboratories (X10) in 1976 and became well-known in many areas of technology, especially in the field of robotics and waste management. Mr. Meacham served as division director of the Fuel Recycle Division and the Center for Environmental Technology at Martin-Marietta. Most recently operated Strategic Analytical Management Services, his own consulting firm. His extensive contributions to many government program in Washington, D.C. earned him national and international respect. He served his beloved nation on many national counsels for the environment and the future of science and technology. Mr. Meacham was an avid bridge player and participated in area bridge clubs. Survivors include his wife, Susan Patrick Meacham, owner of "Varieties" in West Knoxville. Mr. Meacham took great pride in the success of that business and an active part in its many creative projects. Children: daughter and son-in-law, Stacy and Steve Griegs of Williamsport, Pa.; daughter and son-in-law, Janna and Ken Dailey of Knoxville; son and daughter-in-law, Sterling and Lisa Meacham of Knoxville; daughter and son-in-law, Courtney and Alan Burris of Knoxville; stepdaughter, Katherine Reed of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Sarah Jane and Stephen Griegs, Kaihla and Kenneth Dailey, Nicole Meacham; stepfather, Jack Meade; dear friends, William Stephens of Austin, Texas, Jim Saling of Greensberg, Pa., Darryl and Linda Reed of Maryville, Johnny Patrick and Anne Gillenwater of Maryville; many respected business associates, fellow scientists and friends both here and in many countries of the world, especially in Japan.
