She was a member of Mouth of Richland Baptist Church and a cafeteria supervisor at U.T. Hospital. Preceded in death by parents; Sam Sr. and Erma Headrick.

Slaughter, Dorothy Covington –beloved wife of 62 years of Elmer Slaughter, passed from this mortal existence in the early morning hours of Sunday, November 21, 2004. Dorothy was retired from teaching for many years at Mount Olive Elementary School in Knox County. She was a lover of nature, was an avid bird watcher and was passionate about the preservation of her beloved Smokies. Dorothy will be sorely missed by all those who were fortunate enough to know her.

Dorothy was the mother of three daughters, Dorothy (June), Jane and Kim; the grandmother of Curtis, Betsy (deceased), Andrew and Nathan Greer; great-grandmother of Christina and Isabelle Greer; and sister of Betty Jo Williams.

Carl Lee Doyle

Doyle, Carl Lee, age 89, of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee, formerly of South Knoxville, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at Wyndridge Health Center in Crossville, Tennessee. Despite Carl’s illness over more than two decades, his kindness, warm heart and gentle nature was never lost and touched those around him until his last day. Carl and his wife, Mary, became members of the Fairfield Glade Community Church upon their retirement in 1980. Previously, Carl was a lifelong member of Vestal United Methodist Church in South Knoxville where for 20 years he taught the Young Adult Sunday school class, which is named the “Carl Doyle Class.” Carl graduated from Young High School in Knoxville and Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, participating in three varsity sports and earning a teaching degree. Carl declined an invitation to play Minor League Baseball and taught and coached at Karns High School for three years. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during World War II with the 20th Fighter Group in England for three years as a Master Sergeant maintaining P-38 Aircraft. Carl and Mary met in Washington State and were married in Riverside, California in 1943 during Carl’s training. After the war, Carl was employed by the Veterans Administration in Knoxville and by Union Carbide in Oak Ridge at the K-25 Plant. He resumed his teaching career in 1958 as a Social Studies teacher and coach at Vestal Elementary School. He then taught at Doyle Middle School and retired as an Assistant Principal from the Knox County School System in 1980 having served for 25 years. Carl was an avid hunter and fisherman and with Mary was well traveled across America and beyond. Preceded in death by parents, Ernest C. and Inez Doyle; brothers, Kemp and Homer Doyle; sister, Louise Nordmo.

Loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Mary Doyle; son and daughter-in-law, David and Marcia Doyle; granddaughter, Erin Doyle; sister, Lillie Hatfield; sisters-in-law, Cotteena Doyle of Knoxville and Rosina Babien of Westville, New Jersey; several nieces and nephews.

INEZ ELIZABETH BALES, age 74 of Knoxville, died Monday, November 29, 2004 at Colonial Hills Nursing Center. She was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church in Knoxville. She was employed for many years as a waitress with Quarterback Restaurant and Shoney’s in Knoxville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin E. Bales, son Paul W. Bales, her parents Orville L. Perry and Naomi Ruth Perry, brother Henry A. Perry.

July 25, 1919 in Knoxville, Tennessee. She was retired from Robertshaw Fulton Credit Union and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Jean Sands Coffey and her beloved husband Woodrow O. Chambers, son of W. H. Chambers and Ester Renneau Chambers. She was also preceded in death by sisters Nora Hensley of Knoxville and Edith Williams of Atlanta and a brother Shelley Coffeey killed in World War II.

Sister Etta Jones of Knoxville; two daughters: Linda Gail Chambers of Columbus, Ohio and Brenda C. Carter and husband Thomas Lee Carter of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was the grandmother of Thomas C. Carter of New York and Gina (and husband Jeff) Kroner of Oakley, California and the great-grandmother of Noah Aaron and Ethan Liam Kroner of Oakley, California. She was blessed and is survived by compassionate caregivers Joanna, Angie, Diane, Trenia, Patsy, Terry, and Linda.
