Loy, Conrad, R. was born
on August 18, 1910 and peacefully walked into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, December 28, 2003. He was deeply loved by his family and made friends everywhere he went. Conrad was the son of the late Mack and Martha Loy of Union County. He was a member, deacon and elder of Graystone Presbyterian Church, where he also served as chief cook of the Thanksgiving and Easter breakfasts for 50 consecutive years. In 1953, he and several businessmen chartered the South Knoxville Optimist Club where he served as President and prepared dinner for up to 100 members every Monday night for over 30 years. His career included management of Gay Street’s S & W Cafeteria, and then he was employed in design and sales of stage curtains for Knoxville Scenic Studios, retiring at 77. The last five years of his life were spent in the warmth and nurture of Peggy Reynolds and her staff at Cove View Home for the Elderly.

His wife of 65 years, Mary Evelyn Rogers Loy; daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Jay McNeill of Sevierville; son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathrine; son, Conrad “Randy”, all of Knoxville; 2 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Stephens, Hal C., age 91, of Knoxville, passed away Monday, August 16, 2004. He was a member for 61 years and deacon at First Baptist Church in Knoxville. He was a graduate of Morristown High School Class of 1934 and was the most valuable player in 1932. He went to Duke University on an athletic scholarship and was the president of the Duke Student Union and a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. He was the headwaiter in the dining hall at Duke University and was a basketball and football official in North Carolina and Tennessee from 1939-1952. He was inducted into the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in the category of Special Recognition in 1995. Member of Knoxville Optimist Club with perfect attendance for 57 years; President of the John Sevier Home, President of the John Sevier Family and was also appointed Tennessee Colonel by Gov. Don Sundquist. In 1938, Mr. Stephens accepted Executive Director position of the Boys Club in Elizabeth City, North Carolina and in 1943 came to Knoxville as Founder and Executive Director of the Knoxville Boys Club. He served in that capacity for 35 years. During his tenure seven clubs were established and he facilitated the integration of these clubs, the first in the South. This also included Boys Clubs in Maryville and Oak Ridge. He also served on several National Committees and was nominated for Knoxville Young Man of the Year. During his retirement, he was an aluminum etch artist and was an avid golfer, Tennessee History and Civil War enthusiast and traveled extensively giving speeches and writing articles, traveled the Middle East and Europe, and enjoyed genealogy research. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ann Mary Harmon Stephens; his parents, 7 brothers and sisters.

August 25, 1913 in Anderson County, Tennessee, passed away Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at Windwood Health Rehabilitation Center in Clinton. She was retired from the Knox County School System as the Business Office Manager at State Area Vocational Technical School. Mrs. Carpenter was preceded in death by parents, William L. and Hester Louise Monger Gill; brothers, William, Lillard, Vance and Raymond Gill; sister, Blanche Barber.

A member of Meridian Baptist Church for more than 40 years, she taught Sunday School in the Primary Department for many years. Mrs. Wise received her B.S. Degree in Home Economics from The University of Tennessee and was a teacher of Home Economics and primary grades for several years.
