Hobby, Sara Stroud, age 63, President of Hobby Industries, Inc. of Knoxville, entered into Heaven at 12:59 AM Monday, June 28, 2004 from the Intensive Care Unit at the University of Tennessee Hospital. It is very important to mention how strong Sara has been through her battle with esophageal cancer since her diagnosis on October 12, 2000. With each medical crisis since then and up until the end, we have watched our loving mother and wife rely on her faith to see her through each trial. Her faith, courage and positive attitude have been benchmarks for all who knew her. Sara was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in South Knoxville for 56 years. She is preceded in death by her parents, W.J. and Blanche Stroud.

Stanton, Max, age 60, of South Knoxville, passed away Saturday July 10, 2004 at St. Mary’s Residential Hospice. He was a member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church, Oriental Lodge #453, and Scottish Rite Temple. Mr. Stanton was an employee of the Tennessee Department of Mental Health, a former employee of Oak Ridge National Laboratory Y-12 Plant, and also served as a deputy for the Knox county Sheriff’s Department. He was a graduate of South High School. Preceded in death by father, Ollie H. Stanton, and sister, Wilma Jean Stanton Daws.

Edwards, Eugene (Gene), called “Lum” Edwards by his fellow workers, went to be with the Lord Saturday, July 10, 2004. Gene was widely known and loved by a host of friends and family. His many deeds were quietly done. Under privileged boys were very important to him. Gene helped organize uniformed little league baseball for boys in Knoxville and managed teams for many years. He also was a high school football referee and loved to play golf. He was a Methodist and his belief and faith in God were staunch. Gene retired as Sales Manager from American Bakeries (Merita) after forty-one years of loyal service. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of seventy years, Ruby Ellen Edwards; brothers, Raymond, Herman, Lawrence and Charles.

William Walter Smith, Jr.

Smith, Jr., William Walter (Bill), age 73, of South Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at NHC Healthcare due to a brief illness with cancer. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the Korean War. At the age of 18, he joined the Army serving with the 101st Screaming Eagles. His service would include the occupation of Germany and the Korean War. Mr. Smith retired from Rock-Tenn after 38 years of service. Preceded in death by father, William W. Smith, Sr.; mother, Helen Kinsella; sister, Dorothy Kennedy and ex-wife, Betty Pate.

He was a graduate of Young High School and served in the United States Marine Corp. After many years of service, Harold retired from KUB. As an athlete, Harold loved football, baseball and basketball. Through the years, he sponsored and coached several South Knoxville teams. Preceded in death by wife, Gladys Setzer.

NEWMAN, MRS. MARY HEATON, born
September 20, 1925 in Birmingham, AL, daughter of the late William Harry and Margaret Kroeger Heaton of Ooltewah, TN. Her father, being in the transportation field, she lived, during her early years, in Birmingham, Chattanooga, Atlanta and Knoxville. Graduated from Central High, Knoxville, class of 1942 and later attended Carson-Newman College. Married to husband of 60 years, Dr. Lee Newman. She attended business school in Memphis and held positions in the insurance and publication industry. During her husband’s career with the Naval Medical service, she was involved in little theatre productions in California, Florida and overseas in Japan. She also had several hundred hours in volunteer counseling with the Navy Relief Society. For this, she received a commendation from Commanding General, Camp Pendleton Marine Base for her outstanding service. Active in teaching and nursery director at First Presbyterian Church, Knoxville. She served as President of the auxiliary to the Tennessee Optometric Association and worked in her husband’s optometic practice as office manager until retirement in 1992.

She is survived by husband, Dr. Lee Newman; daughter and son-in-law, Kristy Anita and Don Rochat; granddaughter and husband, Emilee and Michael Dockery; great-grandson, Jared Dockery.
