Brown, Willard E., age 70, of South Knoxville, born
April 8, 1933, died Saturday, November 29, 2003. He was a member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Frank Brown and mother Grace Brown of Kingsport, Tennessee. Raised in Kingsport, and served in the U.S. Air Force in the 809th Air Police Unit at McDill Air Force Base, Tampa, Florida, as a sergeant. He graduated from East Tennessee State with a B.S. in Education and a Masters Degree from the University of Tennessee. He worked in the Knoxville City School System as a teacher and coach at South High School from 1956-74, serving as head football coach from 1966-73. In 1974 he became assistant principal at Gresham Jr. High School. In 1976 he became principal of Rule High School from where he retired in 1983. In 1979 he was recognized as Vocational Principal of the year. His 1969 South High football team was the first team to qualify under the newly established TSSAA playoff system. In 1980 he was awarded a Danforth Foundation Principal’s Fellowship for Urban Administrators. In 1982-83, Rule High School was selected by the Ford Foundation as one of the top twelve inner-city high schools in the United States. In 1983 he was awarded the Mayor’s Merit Award by the City of Knoxville.

Johnson, Joel Robert, age 92, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, November 29, 2003. He proudly served his country during World War II in the Army and as a guard for the Atomic City. He later retired from East Tennessee Packing House. He is preceded in death by wife, Mary and daughter, Sue Tucker.

Pugh, Jack Hill, age 80, of Knoxville, passed away quietly on Saturday, December 13, 2003 at NHC Nursing Home. He was a WWII United States Army veteran serving as a medic in the Southern Philippines. Retired from the advertising/publishing business and was an avid Ham operator so now the W4ATA is a silent key. Preceded in death by parents, Frank and Isia Hill Pugh of Monroe County; brother and sister-in-law, Walter W. and Pearl Pugh.

King, Helen Irene Cunningham -age 80 of South Knoxville, passed away Monday, January 20, 2003 at home after a lengthy illness. Helen was a graduate of Young High School. She was a long time member of South Knoxville Baptist Church and an employee of the Knoxville City School System during which time she was a secretary at Rule High School. Helen and her late husband, Burnette M. (Bunt), founded Ye Olde Steak House on August 15, 1968. From 1968 until 1998, Helen was very active in the business until failing health forced her to retire.

Preceded in death by parents, James Harvey and Martha Adaline McCammon Cruze, Sr.; wife, Elizabeth Ford Cruze; son, William Wallace Cruze, Jr.; 8 brothers and 6 sisters.
