'Cap' McCrary dies at age 91
WOODBURY -- A local legend has passed.
Wednesday's death of 91-year-old lawyer Walter L. "Cap" McCrary, one of the early mayors of Woodbury (from 1935-39), a charter member of the influential Woodbury Lions Club and Cannon County's oldest World War II veteran, left a wake of grief among Woodbury citizens.
"He was his own person and I think he enjoyed being an unusual man," said Jennings Motors owner Bill Jennings.
"He was ahead of his time as a mayor and public official since he, when he was mayor back in the early 1930s, was the first to see the need of a public water system and public sidewalks," said Jennings. "Cap always seemed to be out front because it was he who led the way to getting the city's first fire truck, too. And he was the last legendary member of the original Woodbury Bar Association that included the likes of my grandfather, Mr. Jim Cummings."
Cap McCrary was also known for being on time for appointments.
"At Lions Club meetings, you always knew it was time to start eating when Cap would arrive sharply at 7 p.m.," said Cannon County Clerk and Master Harold Patrick. "He was always on time, too, for his court appearances when he worked as a lawyer. He was known for being on time and always was concerned for his fellow man."
McCrary was a sought-after person for advice too, said Patrick.
"When a public official would ask him for advice, he was a gentlemen in that he would give his advice, but would never criticize the office holder personally," added Patrick. "He was the perfect constituent to public officials and will be greatly missed by an entire community of folks that loved him."
McCrary also owned McCrary Insurance Co. prior to his death and was a member of the Woodbury Presbyterian Church, the Cannon County Arts Center and the Adams Memorial Library board.
