James T. 'Tommy' Carpenter Sr.
Friday, May 7, 2004

Mr. James T. "Tommy" Carpenter Sr., 84, resident of West 12th Street, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Jimmy R. Thomason and Ted Burleson officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to West 7th Street Church of Christ, 405 West 7th St., Columbia, TN 38401 or The Heart Society, c/o Martha McKennon, P.O. Box 1148, Columbia, TN 38402. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Jimmy Hollis Carpenter and Inez Priscilla Underwood Carpenter. On Jan. 19, 1947, he married Mary Hardison Carpenter who preceded him in death Dec. 9, 2000. He was previously employed by J.C. Haywood Plumbing then worked at Union Carbide until he retired. Mr. Carpenter was a member of West 7th Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include one son, Tommy (Linda Gail) Carpenter Jr. of Columbia; one daughter, Frances Ann (Tommy H.) Grimsley of Jackson; one sister, Mrs. Dorothy (Robert) Thomason of Mt. Pleasant; one brother, Eugene (Evelyn) Carpenter of Columbia; five grandchildren, Jason Carpenter, Tiffany Carpenter, Mrs. Sara Augustine, Mrs. Tara Brown and Mrs. Rachael Hunter; and special friends, Hardin and Edith Voss.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Martha Cox, Alma Pinkston and Myrtle Holder.

Pallbearers will be Jason Carpenter, Jeff Hardison, Bob Thomason, Alan Thomason, David Pinkston, A. Manson Morrow II, Hollis Carpenter, Freeman Holder and Billy Holder.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Auditorium Sunday School Class at West 7th Street Church of Christ, retired employees of Union Carbide, Dr. William Robinson II, Dr. David Daniels and Dr. Jacques Heibig.

Mrs. James N. Voorhies
Monday, May 10, 2004

Mrs. Elizabeth Armstrong Voorhies, 100, long-time teacher and resident of Brunson Drive, died Saturday, May 8, 2004, at NHC Hillview.

Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Bill Williamson officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 4-7 p.m. Monday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home and from 2-3 p.m. Tuesday at the church.

A native of Savannah in Hardin County, she was the daughter of the late Sam H. Armstrong and Caroline Bingham Armstrong.

A 1922 graduate of Central High School, she earned a Bachelor's Degree at Middle Tennessee State University and a degree in library science at George Peabody College. She taught for a number of years at Andrews Elementary School and Baker Elementary School and served as librarian at Baker Elementary School prior to her retirement.

Mrs. Voorhies was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, taught Sunday School for many years and served as chairman of the Women's Evening Circle.

She was a member of the Association of University Women, Maury County Retired Teachers Association, Business and Professional Women's Club, American Legion Auxiliary and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

On April 29, 1925, she married James N. Voorhies who preceded her in death Jan. 8, 1957.

Survivors include two daughters, Miss Marguerite Voorhies and Mrs. Carolyn Voorhies Hunter, both of Columbia; five grandsons, John Norris Hunter III and Johnny Voorhies, Joseph Voorhies, Dickie Voorhies and Nickie Voorhies, all of Columbia; a granddaughter, Michelle Voorhies of Columbia; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, James L. Voorhies, Jan. 11, 1985.

Elders and Deacons of First Presbyterian Church will serve as pallbearers.

Mary Virginia Netherton O'Guinn Beard

Mary Virginia Netherton O'Guinn Beard, 62, died Sunday, May 9, 2004, at her residence on Holmes Branch Road in Williamsport.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Joe Rhodes officiating. Burial will be in Adkisson Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 48 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Lebanon native was the daughter of the late Jessie Lee Netherton and Nora Lee Keith Netherton. She was first married to Bobby Gene O'Guinn, then later married Douglas W. Beard who preceded her in death April 2, 1994. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include three daughters, Mary Lynn (Richard) Butler of Nashville, Bobbie Jean (Robert) O'Guinn Nevis of Lawrenceburg and Crystal (Mike) Quillen of Columbia; two sons, Tommy Lee (Mary Lou Brooks) O'Guinn of Columbia and James Donald (Amanda) O'Guinn of Brewton, Ala.; two sisters, Nanny C. Howell of Fairview and Floy Hughes; two brothers, Buford Netherton and Joe Netherton, both of Franklin; stepchildren, Eddie Beard Sr. of Lawrenceburg and Rita Cole and Anita Beard Hawks, both of Columbia; 19 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Ted Griggs, Robert Nevis, Charlie Burns, Mike Quillen, John Scales and John Beard.

Charles Boyd 'C.B.' Mosley
Wednesday, May 12, 2004

Mr. Charles Boyd "C.B." Mosley, 62, of Columbia died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at his residence.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hannaway Street Original Church of God with Elder Glenn Beard III officiating. The body will lie-in-state Wednesday at V.K. Ryan & Son Funeral Home. Burial is in Rosemount Cemetery.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Charles Boyd Sr. and Emma Wood Mosley. He received his education in the Maury County school system, excelling in both basketball and football.

He was a member of Hannaway Street Original Church of God. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Brooks; and a granddaughter; two brothers, C.L. Mosley and John Mosley; and two sisters, Luvenia Mosley and Barbara Oliver.

Survivors include six children, Venorcia Rahim of Memphis, Charles Mosley Jr. and Keith Mosley, both of Columbia, Kiwanis Jones of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Iva Frierson and Tina Parks, both of Columbia; 13 grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Mayberry and June Teresa Mosley, both of Columbia; devoted niece, Gwendolyn Mayberry; and other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

HUNTSVILLE, ALA. - J.C. Eastep, 73, died at his home in Huntsville, Ala.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Carr & Erwin Funeral Home with burial in Mitchell Cemetery in Lauderdale County, Ala.

The Lauderdale County, Ala. native was the son of the late Mancel and Clara Eastep. He retired from the U.S. Air Force with 20 years of service.

Survivors include a daughter, Marcie Rigsby of Huntsville, Ala.; son, Don Eastep of Pulaski; sister, Joyce Peterson of Huntsville, Ala. and two grandchildren.

Mr. Whitey Stanfill

Mr. William Howard "Whitey" Stanfill, 68, retired from Monsanto Chemical Company, husband of Patricia Davis Stanfill, formerly of Columbia and a resident of Trenton, Mich., died Wednesday May 12, 2004, at in  Louisiana.

Funeral services for Mr. Stanfill will be conducted Sunday May 16, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia. Burial will follow in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends from Saturday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kittie Fly

Mrs. Catherine Ann "Kittie" Burns Fly, RN, 51, wife of Claude Fly and a resident of the Williamsport Pike in the Sawdust Community, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

A memorial service for Mrs. Fly will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Williamsport United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Smith and the Rev. Larry McGranahan officiating. Inurnment will be in the Mt. Nebo Cemetery.

The family will visit with friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Williams Funeral Home Columbia.

The Red Springs, N.C., native was the daughter of Madeline Odom Burns Love and the late Halbert L. Burns of Red Springs, N.C. She was a graduate of Red Springs High School.

She started her nursing career as a Candy Striper then became an LPN.

She received her A.S. degree in Nursing from Columbia State Community College. She served as director of nursing for several nursing homes in Columbia and Southfield, Mich., and was charge nurse for First Floor West at Maury Regional Hospital.

She also was involved in Home Health Care and was affiliated with several local physicians. She was a member of the Williamsport United Methodist Church.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by a daughter, Sarah Katherine Fly of the Sawdust Community; a son, Nathan Franklin Fly of the Sawdust Community; a sister, Mary Norton of Canton, N.C.; her mother-in-law, Ruth Fly of the Sawdust Community; three brothers-in-law, Frank M. (Suzanne) Fly of Murfreesboro, J. Mark (Kathleen) Fly of Norris and Joe L. Fly of the Sawdust Community; a daughter, Pat Fly of Dallas,  Texas; a son, Randy (Donna) Fly of Algood; and a brother, Halbert (Denise) Burns of Shelby, N.C.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Kittie Fly, Memorial RN Scholarship Fund set up at Community First Bank in Columbia, 501 S. James M. Campbell Boulevard, Columbia, TN 38401 or the Columbia State Community College Foundation, P.O. Box 1315, Columbia, TN 38402.

Marianne Kelley

Marianne Kelley, a resident of Holiday Island, Ark., and former Columbia resident, departed this life Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, in Fayetteville, Ark., at the age of 76.

Marianne was born April 1, 1928, the daughter of the late Oliver Whitfield and Clara (Martin) Smith. She was a school teacher and a member of the Holiday Island Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include her son, Randolph Whitfield Kelley of Houston,  Texas; a daughter, the Rev. Clare Kelley of Holiday Island, Ark.; two grandchildren, David Oliver Steadham of Fort Smith, Ark., and Randolph Whitfield Kelley Jr. of Houston,  Texas; a great-grandson, Lucien Avery Steadham of Fort Smith, Ark.; a granddaughter-in-law, Heather Steadham of Fort Smith, Ark.; and other relatives and a host of friends.

Memorial services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Holiday Island Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Gail Perkins officiating. Interment icon will be in the Wetumpka Cemetery in Wetumpka, Ala.

Arrangements were handled by Nelson Funeral Service.

Mrs. Irvie Young Hardison

Mrs. Irvie Lou Andrews Young Hardison, 104, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at her residence on North Hardin Drive in Columbia.

Services for Mrs. Hardison will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at the Williams Funeral Home of Columbia with Jerry Elder officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the funeral home.

The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Ben Andrews Sr. and Emma Lee Hardison Andrews. Mrs. Hardison was first married to Willie Porter Young who died in 1975 and was later married to Lester Hardison who died in 1987. She was a homemaker and a member of the West Seventh Street Church of Christ.

Mrs. Hardison is survived by her grandchildren, Peggy (John) McCoy of Jackson, James "Jim" Allen (Patsy) Young of Columbia, Rosemary (Eddie) King of Columbia and Patsy (Dave) Coleman of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Shawn (Karen) Bryan of Baltimore, Md., William Jennings (Virgie) of Yellow Stone National Park and Sarah Lee Young of Columbia; and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. James Porter Young Bacon of Columbia.

She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Mrs. Linda (David) Gillenwater; five sisters, Edna Mae Langley, Miss Edwin Green, Mattie McMeen, Mamie Rawlins and Violet Sue Andrews; two brothers, Ben Andrews Jr. and Bill Andrews; and four children, Willy Porter Young Jr., James Porter Young, Mrs. Irene Henry Dawson and Charles Allen Young.

Pallbearers will be Harold Hutcherson, Buddy Andrews, Buddy Moore, Jimmy Wright, Wayne Holliday, Jerry Renfro and Paul Fay.
