Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Darby Drive in Florence, Ala. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Greenview Funeral Home on Chisholm Road in Florence, Ala. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Park.
Georgia Estelle Demastus Krys, "Always a Lady" was born Dec. 6, 1923, at home in Columbia. She was the fourth of the family's six children who survived infancy. Georgia Estelle was 5 years old when the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began. She spoke of how intensely the people of the South loved F.D.R., whose broadcast "fireside chats" and works programs brought hope into that terrible period of hunger and fear. Estelle was an avid student at Andrews School and honored teachers all her life with both her words and her dedication to lifelong learning.
Pearl Harbor was bombed the day before her 18th birthday, and she recalled this event every subsequent year on her birthday. Estelle was a delicate and asthmatic child but, after the war came, she took on "a man's job" in a chemical plant and earned the Roosevelt "E for Excellence" award for her war work.
It meant a lot to Estelle that the very same soldier whose job she had taken survived the war and was able to return to work. Estelle wrote many letters to soldiers as her family endured the absence of her brother Samuel fighting in the South Pacific. When Sam returned home, he brought not only medals but also the pocket Bible with a metal cover his sister had given him to carry over his heart.
After the war, Estelle went to work for Southern Bell as a telephone operator. Wages for telephone operators had been held down by government regulation during the war and when the company refused to normalize wages voluntarily. Estelle participated in a strike and union organizing, She was always grateful to the telephone linemen who supported the operator's strike thereby helping to bring it to a successful conclusion.
Walter Krys, a veteran friend of Estelle's brother-in-law Ernest Rinks, came south to Columbia from Chicago on a post-war bicycle trip. Georgia Estelle married Walter Krys in 1947. They had a daughter in 1949 and another daughter in 1952, The family moved to Florence, Ala., for Walter to take a job with TVA.
Estelle worked briefly for the Hall Edmond Company and then worked 17 years for Olan Mills Photography Studio.
Georgia Estelle used her retirement to author a book, "From My Times to Your Times," a family memoir and social history. She worked a crossword puzzle every day and continued as a caring presence in the lives of family, friends and strangers.
Mrs. Krys is survived by her daughters, Katherine Grace Krys and Elizabeth Carol Krys; her husband, Walter Krys; her brother, Douglas Demastus and wife Jean; her sister-in-law, Joan Demastus; 10 nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.
Georgia Estelle Demastus Krys died in the faith and fear of God with her hope and trust in Jesus Christ. She was always a lady and will be greatly missed by those who remain, "Sweet angels sing her to her rest."
