Willie Armstrong

Willie Armstrong, 76 of Columbia, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at Imperial Manor Health Care Center in Madison.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Carmack Boulevard Church of Christ with Thomas Ray Frierson officiating.

The body will lie-in-state Sunday at V.K. Ryan & Son Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rosemount Cemetery.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Ed and Mary Armstrong. He was employed by the city of Columbia as a heavy equipment operator.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Katherine Armstrong; five brothers, James Edward Armstrong, Marvin Armstrong, J.C. Armstrong, Frank Armstrong and Roy Gene Armstrong; and two sisters, Mattie Frances Mitchell and Geraldine Thompson.

Survivors include three sons, Willie D. Armstrong Jr., Roger Armstrong and Joshua Armstrong; a daughter, Patricia Ann Shyes; three sisters, Brownie Armstrong, Dorothy Armstrong and Leola Braden; two stepsons, Jerry Miller and Tony Miller; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Robert Louis Newbern

Robert Louis Newbern, 67, of Columbia, died Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at the Alvin C. York Medical Center in Murfreesboro.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. David E. Williams Sr. officiating.

Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens with full military honors.

V.K. Ryan & Son Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

A native of Medon, he was the son of the late George and Mary Reagan Newbern. He received his education in the Maury County school system, graduating from Carver-Smith High School in 1954. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 25 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Newbern; two sons, Joseph Newbern and Scott Newbern; two sisters, Frances Bailey of St. Louis, Mo., and Marva Ogilvie of Roswell, Ga.; a brother, Charles Newbern of Denver,  Colo.; an uncle, three aunts and several nieces and nephews.

Larry O'Neal 'Monk' Johnson

ELLENSBURG, Wash. - Larry O'Neal "Monk" Johnson, 62, of Ellensburg, Wash., died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at his residence.

He was born in Pulaski to Edward and Ruth Johnson. He was raised and attended school in Columbia. He served his country in the U.S. Navy until 1964 and while in service met LaVonne Thompson. They were married March 5, 1963, in Seattle, Wash., and celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary last year. Larry enjoyed many hobbies, baseball collecting and watching ballgames on TV.

He enjoyed being with his family and doing whatever he could to help each one of them. If anyone needed help, Larry was more than willing to go that extra mile for family, friend or stranger.

Larry will be sorely missed by his entire family, whom he loved very much and by his many friends. He saw the angels and left with them. Rest in peace, we love you.

Larry is survived by his wife, LaVonne "Bonnie" Johnson; a daughter, Jennifer; a son, John; and a grandson David, all of Ellensburg, Wash.

He also leaves behind three brothers, Ray (Karen), Jerry (Doris) and Ricky; and one sister, Kaye, all of Columbia; a very special friend and brother-in-law, Kenneth Thompson of Kittitas, Wash.; and many other relatives and friends.

Services were conducted Saturday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Steward & Williams Tribute Center, in Ellensburg, Wash. A reception followed in the family home.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Heart Foundation of choice.

Billie 'PeeWee' Renfro

HAMPSHIRE - Billie Baker "PeeWee" Renfro, 85, retired employee of Monsanto and resident of the Hampshire Community, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Centennial Medical Center.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Gillstrap and Rock Jaggers officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 26 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Pisgah Cemetery Fund, c/o Billy Walker, 4161 Biffle Lane, Hampshire, TN 38461. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Leslie Renfro and Ada Johnson Renfro. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Prior to his employment with Monsanto, Mr. Renfro worked with his father as a blacksmith for 25 years in the Hampshire Community. He was a member of the Hampshire United Methodist Church and the Hampshire Men's Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Gladys Brown Renfro of Hampshire; one son, Everette (Janet) Renfro of Culleoka; one son-in-law, Jerry Vick of Spring Hill; three grandchildren, Renee (Bob) Bowser, Mike (Carolyn) Renfro and Melody (David) Huckaby; four great-grandchildren, Will Bowser, John Bowser, Savannah Huckaby and Brittney Huckaby; two brothers-in-law, Bill (Martha) Brown and Richard (Ruth) Brown; two sisters-in-law, Marie Holden and Callie Renfro; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Norma Jean Renfro Vick; and four brothers, Charlie Renfro, Bob Renfro, Jim Renfro and Thomas Renfro.

Pallbearers will be Mike Renfro, Bob Bowser, David Huckaby, Charles Turner, Gene Quarles, Bobby Lee Runions, Paul Whiteside and Ken Sherman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jane Quarles, Reba Savage, Blair and Sandra Pogue, Judy Baxter, Doris and Massie Davis, Margaret Sherman, Sam Whiteside, Mack Whiteside, Pete Harlan, Buddy Martin, Gene Davidson, Janet and Phillip Griffith, Diane Runions, Larry Love, Glenn Duncan, Dr. Eric Dyer, William and Mildred Rogers, Monsanto Retirees, members of Hampshire Men's Club and members of Hampshire United Methodist Church.

Mary Esther Green

LEWISBURG - Mary Esther Green, 73, of Lewisburg, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Marshall Medical Center.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at London Funeral Home with burial to follow in Lone Oak Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Green was a native of Marshall County, the daughter of George Dewey and Delphia Chrisman Newcomb and the widow of George W. Green. She was a housewife and a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church.

She is survived by daughters, Peggy Harwell, Mary E. Hodge, Annita Slaste and Rebecca Lancaster, all of Lewisburg; a son, Donald Green of Lewisburg; a sister, Agnes Newcomb of Lewisburg; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Shelton.

Mr. James Everett Sanders

Mr. James Everett Sanders, 81, a resident of Davis Drive in Columbia, died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at his home.

Services for Mr. Sanders will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Williams Columbia Funeral Home with Bro. Greg Gwin and Bro. Arthur Haynes officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends from 5-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home

Born in Fentress County, he was the son of the late George and Mattie Banks Sanders and husband of Dorothy Cavender Sanders. He did maintenance for Stoneybrook Golf Course and worked for J.T. Kelly in the phosphate industry for 40 years. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Collegeview Church of Christ.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Jim Sanders of Columbia, Debra (Gary) Tanner of Pleasantville and Bobby (Tracy) Sanders of Shelbyville, Ky.; five grandsons, Daniel Sanders and Cole Sanders, both of Shelbyville, Ky., Logan Sanders and Dylan Sanders, both of Pulaski, and Travis Tanner of Pleasantville; three step-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Louise Edwards and Ethel Love, both of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by a brother, G.H. Sanders; and two sisters, Annie Mae McCaleb and Agnes Oliver.

Pallbearers will be William Love, Thomas N. Edwards, Ronald Fuller, Bill Johnson, Jerry Brunson, Garry Tanner and Don Fly.

Honorary pallbearers will be Staff of Stoneybrook Golf Course, the Doctors and staff of Columbia Oncology, Dr. Toban, Dr. Kelly, the staff of NHC Home Care and members of Collegeview Church of Christ.

Memorials may be made to the NHC Home Care, 915 S. James Campbell Blvd., Columbia, TN 38401.

Eula Mae Brown

FRANKLIN - Eula Mae Brown, 70, of Franklin, died Friday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Williamson Medical Center.

Services will be held at noon Wednesday at The People's Church with Herman Mosley officiating.

Burial will be in Spratts Cemetery.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Roundtree, Napier & Ogilvies Franklin Funeral Home.

She was a member of Providence U.P.B. Church and was preceded in death by her parents, John Henry Oden and JoAnn Lockridge Oden.

Survivors include her husband, William Brown of Nashville; sons, Roy Brown of Spring Hill and William Brown of Nashville; daughters, Mary Cartwright and Wanda Davis, both of Nashville, and Norma Haynes of Dickson; brothers, Elder Miton Oden and William Oden, both of Nashville; sisters, Juanita Smith, Margaret Reed and Colleen Carter, all of Nashville, and Odessa Shaw and Joyce Fitzgerald, both of Franklin; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Herbert Davis

CENTERVILLE - Herbert Eugene "Buster" Davis, 60, died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.

Services were conducted Monday at McDonald Funeral Home with Bobby Kelley officiating. Burial was in Campground Cemetery in Centerville.

He was the son of the late Howard Davis and Mary Lou Rosson. He was a farmer and member of Pine Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include sons, William "Bill" Davis and Troy Lane Davis, both of Centerville; brother, William Edward Davis of Duck River; sisters, Lois Stanfill of Columbia and Barbara Nell Pore of Centerville; and one grandson.

Ronald Brown Sr.

Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Fairfield Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. Thursday at McDonald Funeral Home. Burial will be in Harpeth Hills Cemetery.

He was the son of the late Valeria Howell and Edgar Moore Brown Sr. He was employed as a crane operator.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Brown of Centerville; a son, Ron Brown Jr. of Centerville; daughters, Jadalyn Brown of Centerville and Genevieve Brown of Memphis; sisters, Carolyn McWilliams and Linda Whaley, both of Kingston Springs; and a brother, David Brown of Kingston Springs.

Debra Lynn Clymer Beard

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with the Rev. Don McKee officiating. Burial will be in Carlisle Cemetery in Williamson County.

The family will visit with friends from 11 a.m.1 p.m. Saturday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Cumberland County, Ky., native was the daughter of Edna Lucille Coop Clymer of Culleoka and the late Carl E. Clymer. She attended Maury County schools. She was married to L.B. "Dick" Beard, who preceded her in death Dec. 11, 1990.

Survivors in addition to her mother include two daughters, Kimberly Thomas of Culleoka and Angela Marie Kennedy of Columbia; and two grandchildren, Shane Daniel and Cody Daniel.

Ethel Alene Blue

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at True Vine Fellowship Baptist Church with Elder Buford Barbee officiating. The body will lie-in-state Friday at V. K. Ryan & Son Funeral Home. Burial is in Rosemount Cemetery.

A native of Maury County, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Lem R. Benderman. She attended the Maury County school system and was a member of East Eighth Street Church of God where she served on the Usher's Board and the Mother's Board.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Ira A. Symlar; one grandson, Darryl K. Cummins; two brothers, George Benderman and Billy Rankins; and one sister, Ethel Lene Hardison.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Blue; three daughters, Gladys Blue, Frankie Blue and Teresa (Terry) Blue, all of Columbia; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary R. Smith of Nashville; and several aunts, nieces other relatives and friends.
