Mr. Tommy Potts

Mr. Thomas "Tommy" Potts, Jr., 65, retired from UCAR-Carbon as a mill-mix operator for 23 years and a resident of Carter's Creek Pike, died Friday, June 18, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Larry Sands and Penny Love officiating and military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends after 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Maury County native was the son of the late James Thomas Potts, Sr. and Nina Jones Potts and a graduate of Columbia Central High School. He served in the the U. S. Army Reserves for several years and was a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also served as a special Sheriff's Deputy and was a member of the Tennessee State Troopers' Association, Tennessee Sheriffs' Association, Fruit of the Vine and Tennessee Farm Bureau.

Survivors include two daughters, Penny (Hugh) Love of Columbia and Machelle Bailey of Nashville; a sister, Christene Hudson of Nashville; a sister-in-law, Melba Jean Potts of Columbia; three grandchildren, Ashley Love, Hunter Love, Caitlyn Love, all of Columbia; three nieces, Brenda Hay of Nashville, Cookie (Doug) Boshears of Columbia, Linda Hay of Nashville; three nephews, Terry (Christine) Potts, Tim (Lisa) Potts, David (Kim) Potts, all of Columbia; a great-niece, Robyn Boshears; four great-nephews, Jonathan Wayne Potts, Taylor Clinton Potts, John Garrett Potts, James Brandon Potts. He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Potts and a brother, Clint Potts.

Honorary pallbearers are Terry Potts, Tim Potts, David Potts, Thomas Eugene Whitley and Dr. William Robinson.

Mr. A. J. Shepherd

Mr. A. J. Shepherd, 82, a resident of Mooresville Pike in Columbia, died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services for Mr. Shepherd will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Brother James Effler and Brother J.D. Brooks officiating. Burial will be in the Gibsonville Cemetery in Giles County. The family will visit with friends from 4-9 p.m. Sunday and from 4-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Robert and Lourainey Parrish Shepherd and husband of Ellen Crigger Shepherd. He was a retired mechanic from Doug Nash Transmissions and worked as a dairy farmer at Haynes Haven Farm at Spring Hill, and a member of the Highland Ave. Church of God.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Danny Ray (Gloria) Shepherd of Franklin; two grandchildren, Amanda Shepherd and Dennis (Betsy) Shepherd both of Franklin; three great-grandchildren, Luke Shepherd, Megan Shepherd and Sadie Jean Shepherd; a sister, Oma Hindman of Columbia; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Roberta Stewart Shepherd; a sister, Ora Kelley; four brothers, Jim, Ernest, Willie and Madison Shepherd.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Norman, William Owen, Scott Mason, Wayne Arrington, Glen Johnson, C. T. Johnson, Jimmy Beckenback and Pat Ryan.

Honorary pallbearers will be B. J. Crumley, Kenny Marsh, Gene Legg, Danny Marshall, Clarence Lindsey, Pete Johnson, David Warren, Dr. Bobby White, Dr. J. Cummins Couch and Ronnie Johnson.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association Middle Tennessee Region 209 23rd Avenue, North Nashville, TN 37203.

Mrs. Lois Di Ulio

Mrs. Lois Rawson Di Ulio, a resident of McBride Circle in Columbia, died Thursday June 17, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services for Mrs. Di Ulio will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Williams Funeral Home of Columbia with Rick Points officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends from 1-3 p.m. Sunday and from 6-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Born in Hickman County, she was the daughter of the late George Tillman and Daisy Ashworth Rawson and wife of the late Alfred Angelo Di Ulio. She was a seamstress for the Creekwood Company and of the Church of Christ Faith.

She is survived by two daughters, Alfreda Parker of Chapel Hill and Elizabeth (Paul) Pennington of Williamsport; three granddaughters, Chandler Parker and Jordan Parker, both of Chapel Hill and Ruth Di Ulio of New Jersey; four grandsons, Brian Pennington of Williamsport, Jarad Valenti of Walker, La., Daniel Di Ulio of Chapel Hill and James Di Ulio of New Jersey; a brother, Leroy Rawson of Nashville. She was preceded in death by two sons, James and Robert Di Ulio; a grandson, James Di Ulio, Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Pamela Di Uulio; four brothers, Horace, Andrew, Fred and James Rawson.

Pallbearers will be members of the family.

Mr. Franklin L. "Frankie" Benefield

MT. PLEASANT - Mr. Franklin L. "Frankie" Benefield, 57, a resident of Mockingbird Drive in Mt. Pleasant, died Friday June 18, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.

Memorial services for Mr. Benefield will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the New Life Church of Columbia with the Rev. Darrell Martin officiating. The family will visit with friends immediately following the service Saturday. Williams Funeral Home in Columbia will be in charge of the arrangements.

The Jefferson County, Ala. native was the son of Jack Benefield of Adamsville, Ala. and the late, Pauline Miles Benefield. He was the husband of Susan Neal Benefield. He retired from Menasha Corporation of Mt. Pleasant. He was a member of the New Life Church of Columbia and played the Bass Guitar in the church band.

In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by his children, Jamie (Nona) Wilson of Ashville, N.C., Paige (Phil) Stout of Magnolia,  Texas, Philip (Jean Ann) Benefield of Madison, Ala., Scott Benefield of Raleigh, N.C, Frankie (Missy) Benefield of Huntington, W.Va., Miles Benefield and Courtney Benefield, both of Mt. Pleasant; a brother, Jackie (Bernice) Benefield of Birmingham, Ala.; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles and cousins.

Mr. Howard Lee 'H.L.' Gibson, Jr.

HAMPSHIRE - Mr. Howard Lee "H.L." Gibson, Jr., 78, husband of Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Cothran Gibson for 47 years, and a resident of Hampshire passed away at his home Thursday, June 17, 2004, with his family at his side.

Services for Mr. Gibson will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Brother Randy Keene officiating.

Visitation with the family will be 6-9 p.m. Friday and 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Howard Lee Gibson, Sr. and the late Allie Mae Hinson Gibson.

Mr. Gibson was a 1944 graduate of hay Long High School. He was a veteran of European Theatre during World War II. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years and Postmaster at Mt. Pleasant from April 1975 to December 1981. He received the Paul Harris Fellow Award at the Mt. Pleasant Rotary Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading and especially being with his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Jenny (Robert) Cothran of Mt, Pleasant; two sons, Will (Pam) Gibson of Murfreesboro and Jeff Gibson of Corydon, Indiana; seven grandchildren, J.J. (Erin) Gibson of Arkansas, Lindsey Gibson of Arkansas. Sarah Gibson of Hampshire, Luke and Matt Cothran of Mt. Pleasant, Caleb and Logan Gibson of Murfreesboro; two step-grandchildren, Jonathan (Nancy) Cothran of Columbia, Robin Fogle of Columbia; two step-great grandchildren, Chessley and Ty Cothran of Columbia and one sister , Peggy Gammons of Southgate, Mich.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Ruth Woodard.

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Pleasant Library.

Pallbearers will be William S. Chaffin, Charles Matheny, Horace Dawson, Billy S. Gibson, Pat Held, Bill Gibson and Vernon Giles.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Moataz Toban and Maury Regional Ambulance employees.

Evelyn Hastings

LEWISBURG - Evelyn Isley Hastings, 77, of Lewisburg, died Friday, June 18, 2004, in NHC-Hillview in Columbia.

Services were conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Bills McGaugh Funeral Home. Burial was in Sunset Park Cemetery, Garden of Faith.

She was the daughter of the late Jeff and Carrie Haskins Isley. She worked as an accountant and was a member of the Church Street Church of Christ. She was the wife of the late Gene Hastings.

Survivors include five sisters, Margaret Isley Neill, Carolyn Isley Winsett, Shirley Isley Hunter, and Helen Isley Sanders, all of Lewisburg and Gayle Isley Crick White of Columbia.

Mrs. James B. Ray

Mrs. Maggie Nell McDaniel Ray, 86, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at her residence on Park Circle.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Ray Newell officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Riverside United Methodist Church, Library & Carpet Fund, 313 Sixth Avenue, Columbia, 38401. The Marshall County native was the daughter of the late Luther McDaniel and Carrie Wittesett McDaniel, was educated in Marshall County schools and was a graduate of Belfast High School. She served as a private duty nurse at Maury County Hospital for a number of years and was a graduate of the hospital's first LPN Class.

She was a long-time member of Riverside United Methodist Church. Her husband of sixty-five years, James Bentley Ray, died Nov. 3, 2001.

Survivors include a daughter, Alice Ray (Patrick Joseph, Jr.) Riley of Nashville; a son, James Edgar (Betty Russell) Ray of Franklin; three grandchildren, Katherine Ray (Rev. Ray) Chandler, Melissa Nell Riley, Allison Suzanne Riley; three great-grandchildren, Sarah Lynn Chandler, Bentley Ray Chandler, Shawn Patrick Riley.

Active pallbearers are Lee Maddux, Randy Stevens, Anthony Orange, Robert Tate McDaniel, Presley Ramsey, Leslie Lasater, Richard Lasater.

Honorary pallbearers include Dr. Robert M. Johnson, Dr. Jeanne Ballinger, her loving and devoted caregivers, Ms. Effie Tellous, Ms. Mary Hall, Mrs. Edith Adkins, Mrs. Diane James; members of the Fellowship Class at Riverside United Methodist Church and her nephews, K.L. Osteen and Monte Osteen.

Jim Hinkle

PULASKI - Jim Hinkle, 51, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Hillside Hospital.

Services will be conducted 3 p.m. Tuesday at Carr and Erwin Chapel. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Daly Cemetery.

He was the son of Robert Hinkle and Mary Nelson of Pulaski.

Survivors in addition to his parents are brothers, Mark Hinkle or Lawrenceburg and Julian Hinkle of Muncie, In.; and sisters Carol Morse of Illinois and Shirley Hargrove of Pulaski.

Kathryn Brown Conner

PROSPECT - Kathryn Brown Conner, 83, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Hillside Hospital.

Services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday at Carr and Erwin Chapel. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Prospect Cemetery.

The Giles County native was the daughter of the late John and Elsie Brown and widow of the late Edwin Conner.

Survivors include her daughters, Kathy Meadows of Prospect and Donna Powell of Pulaski, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Prospect United Methodist Church or the Prospect Cemetery Fund.

Rachel Nicole Elliott

Rachel Nicole Elliott, 18, 2004 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and employee of Santa Fe Steak House, died Thursday, June 24, 2004 at her residence on Forrest Ridge Trail in the Culleoka Community.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the West Seventh Street Church of Christ with Burton Daimwood and Randy Kersey officiating. Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Beans Creek Church of Christ Cemetery in Coffee County. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Elliott Family Trust Fund at any branch of First Farmers and Merchants National Bank. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Columbia native was the daughter of the late Freda Louise Winton Elliott and a member of the Ephesus Church of Christ.

Salutatorian of the 2004 graduating class of Mt. Pleasant High School, she had been accepted as a member of the Freshman Class at Freed-Hardeman University.

An outstanding student during four years at Mt. Pleasant High School, her activities included membership in Future Farmers of America, grades 9 through 12, serving as Sentinel and Secretary; Business Professionals of America, grades 10 through 12, serving as Parliamentarian as a Senior; Interact Club, grades 9 through 12, Board of Directors; Beta Club, grades 9 through 12, serving as Senior Treasurer; Band, grades 9 through 12, serving as Sophomore Librarian, Senior 1st Lieutenant, Junior and Senior Guard Captain; featured in Who's Who, grades 9 through 12; Senior Salutatorian; High Honor Roll, grades 9 through 12; National Honor Roll; Freshman Algebra I Math Team; Freshman FFA Star Greenhand Award; Star Chapter as a Sophomore; elected to Girls State as a Junior; Most Improved as a Junior and Senior; elected Most Likely to Succeed in Senior Class; State Finalist in Business Professionals of America Public Speaking Contest as a Sophomore and Senior, placing second in State; selected to First Farmers and Merchants National Bank Student Advisory Board as a Senior; also as a Senior, selected as a member of the Tennessee Tech University Honor Band and Middle Tennessee State University Honor Band.

She is survived by a brother, Seth Thomas Elliott of Culleoka; maternal grandparents, Bobby L. and Marie Medley Winton of Manchester; maternal great-grandmother, Winnie Winter of anchester; paternal grandmother, Ruby Elliott of Winchester.

Active pallbearers are fellow Band members Tristen Spraque, Josh Wilhite, Devan Davenport, Jay Cooper and fellow FFA members Caleb Hinson, Dewayne Glass, Eric White, Shawn Blocker. Honorary pallbearers are other members of the Band, Future Farmers of America and 2004 Class of Mt. Pleasant High School.
