Gladys Luttrell

NASHVILLE - Gladys Carlton Luttrell, 86, of Nashville, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at her residence.

A memorial service will be conducted at noon Friday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with Dr. Gayle M. Crowe and Howard Scott officiating. Visitation will be conducted from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

The Eagleville native was the daughter of the late Walker and Susie Morgan Carlton. She graduated from MTSU in 1939 and taught for 20 years. She was employed with the Tenn. Farm Bureau in Columbia and a 4-H club agent in Giles County. She was a member of Bellevue Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Woodrow Luttrell; son, Joe Luttrell of Brentwood; a daughter, Lisa Crowe of Lafayette, Ind. and Patsy Luttrell of Madison, Wis.; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Beckett, Chester Arthur

Mr. Chester Arthur Beckett, better known as "Chet", died Wednesday at Maury Regional Hospital in Columbia. He was 65. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday, February 20, 2004, at 1:00 PM, in the McDonald Funeral Home Chapel. Sam Livingston, Pastor of Highland Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial is to follow in the Downey Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife Cherry L. Brown Beckett, three daughters Vickie Whitwell and Jessica Bain of Hohenwald, and Melissa Clayton of Hopkinsville KY. Also two brothers Robert Beckett of Elyria OH, and Daniel Beckett of Brunswick OH. Eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Mr. Beckett was born April 14, 1938 in Cleveland Ohio. His parents were the late Daniel Vale and Vera Elizabeth Roose Beckett. He was a retired Air Traffic Controller for the Federal Aviation Agency. He served in the United States Air Force.

Visitation with the family will begin at 4:30 PM on Thursday. McDonald Funeral Home, 931-796-2207.

Donald Nation

LEWISBURG - Donald Lee Nation, 71, of Lewisburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, in Glen Oak Healthcare in Shelbyville.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at London Funeral Home. Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Friday and until the time of service Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Round Hill Cemetery.

The  Texas native was the son of the late Lawson Franklin and Lillie Housden Nation. He was a Korean Veteran. He was retired from the Maintenance Dept. of Denton,  Texas school system.

Survivors include his daughter, Misty Beard of the Wheel Community; a step-daughter, Amber Quinby of Buffalo, Okla.; step-sons, Morris Brant of Loco, Okla., Kirby Brant of  Texas, Tommy Brant of Alabama and Monty Brant of Missouri; sisters, Ann Stinchonb and Mildred Purser, both of Denton,  Texas; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Bertha Fisher

LEWISBURG - Bertha Fisher, 81, of Lewisburg, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Covenant Church on Nashville Highway in Lewisburg.

She was a beautician for many years and was a member of the New Covenant Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Pastor James Rhinehart.

Survivors include her daughter, Josie Rhinehart of Lewisburg; her sisters, Mary Simpson of Freeport Long Island, N.Y. and Gertrude Scott and Sarah Harrison, both of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

J.B. Mayberry & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Marie Jett

Mrs. Eugene Marie Hay Jett, 77, a resident of Lee Dr. in Columbia, died Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at her home.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jett will be conducted Friday, February 20, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home of Columbia with Bro. Rick Points officiating. Burial will be in the Lynnwood Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 1:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Eugene and Eva Brady Hay and wife of the late Wilson Milton Jett. She was a retired machine operator from CPS (Plusmark) in Franklin.

She is survived by four daughters, Nancy (Clifford) Shelton of McMinnville, Sue Lara of McMinnville, Janice Carnell of Winchester, Linda Jett of Lynnville; two sons, Ray (Lynne) Jett of Pulaski, Ronnie Jett of Woodbury; sister, Mildred Dile of Columbia; two brothers, Wesley Hay and Earl Hay, both of Columbia; 21 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Sam Hay and two sisters, Dorothy Ragsdale and Lorene Haskins.

Pallbearers will be Dustin Jett, Brian Jett Marcy Jett, Houston Prater, Joshua Thacker, Jason Mills, Jeff Sellars and Jeremy Auspitz.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tracy Potts, Calvin Atkins, Alvin Atkins, Sammy Haskins, Jay Roberts, Justin Carnell, Chris Jett, David Jett, Russell Shelton, Kyle Estes and Cody Mills.

Mrs. Annie Lee Walker McKinzie

Mrs. Annie Lee Walker McKinzie, 80, a resident of Sixth Avenue and retired from Weather Tamer, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital surrounded by loved ones.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Oakes & Nichols with Pastor Monte McCandless and Pastor Regina Black officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com.

A native of the Spring Hill community in Maury County, she was the daughter of the late Andrew J. Walker and Josie Wilson Walker and a member of Faith Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Mary Ruth (Allen) Dean of Portland, Ore., Carolyn L. Kapelski of Highland, Ill., Maxie Hill of Columbia, Betty Ann (Paul) Andrews of Columbia; a son, R M (Kay) McKinzie of Culleoka; a sister, Katie Mai Johnson of Triune; two brothers, Ewell (Jean) Walker of Bellevue, Charles (Helen) Walker of Old Hickory; seven grandchildren, Michael Allen (Denise) Dean, Bryan Matthew (Kari) Dean, Anna (Bryan) Corte, Verna Grantham, Roy Lee Hill, Robert Matthew McKinzie, Nicholas Nathaniel "Nicky" McKinzie; ten great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandchild, John Robert Hill.

Active pallbearers are Matthew McKinzie, Nicky McKinzie, Roy Lee Hill, Anthony LaDon Walker, Gary McCandless, Bud Luther, and David Black. Honorary pallbearers are Michael Allen Dean, Bryan Matthew Dean, Rev. Al Egg, Dr. Iverson, Dr. Farmer, staff of ICU at Maury Regional Hospital, and members of Faith Pentecostal Church.

Joe McCollum

SHEPHARD,  Texas - Joe Lane McCollum, 64, of Shepherd,  Texas, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, in Conroe Medical Centere.

Services were conducted Tuesday by graveside at Farley Chapel Cemetery in Shepherd,  Texas.

The Marshall County native was the son of the late Roy and Velma Webster McCollum.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Blake McCollum of Shepherd,  Texas; sisters, Kaye Hopper and Kathie Beard, both of Belfast and Carole Garner of Pulaski; and a brother, Steve McCollum of Viginia.

Cochran Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harold 'Hack' Owens

CENTERVILLE - Harold Burton "Hack" Owens, 71, of Centerville, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at Baptist Hickman Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at McDonald Funeral Home with Bill McDonald and John Vaughn officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 5-9 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Charles Nickell Cemetery.

He was the son of the late Mary Brown and John C. Owens. He was a self-employed oil distributor.

Survivors include his wife, Oddie Owens of Centerville; sons, Terry and Scott Owens, both of Centerville; a daughter, Pam Blackwell; a brother, Ray Owens of Centerville; a sister, Martha McCord of Nashville; and six grandchildren.

James A. 'Jim' Baxter

Mr. James A. "Jim" Baxter, 66, resident of Universal City,  Texas, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, following a long illness.

A memorial service will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Jim Baxter Scholarship Fund, UTSA Development Office, 6900 N. Loop 1604 West, San Antonio, TX 78249-0618.

The Tennessee native was the son of the late A.J. Baxter and Ella Brown Blocker Baxter Thomason. He was married to Geraldine Baxter who preceded him in death. He was a 1955 graduate of Columbia Central High School.

He was a retired Air Force CMSGT who served two years in Vietnam and numerous tours of duty in the United States and Europe. He was also a civil service retiree. At the onset of his illness, Mr. Baxter was teaching courses in political science at the University of  Texas at San Antonio.

Survivors include his stepdaughter and son-in-law, Shirlene and Mark Biediger of Adkins,  Texas; stepson and daughter-in-law, Jack and Debbie Bradford of Leon Valley,  Texas; three grandchildren, J. T. Bradford, Britnye Bradford and Chandra Biediger; a sister, Judy Cothran; nephews, James Lewis Cothran, Johnny Cothran and Shane Cothran; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mr. John David Wise, Sr.

Mr. John David Wise, Sr., 69, a resident of Antrim Circle in Columbia, died Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at Maury Regional Hospital.

Services for Mr. Wise will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with the Rev. Brian Wiesinger officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends from 5-8 p.m.Friday at the funeral home.

The Detroit, Michigan native was the son of the late Wilton and Ruby Hodges Wise and the widowed of Dolores Joan Young Wise. He was a retired press operator from General Motors Corporation in Livonia, Mich. He was a long-time resident of Westland, Mich. and member of the Moose Lodge in Dearborn, Mich. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and was an avid golfer and bowler.

He is survived by his children, Cheri (Mike) Kash of Columbia and John David (Mary) Wise, Jr. of Canton, Mich.; six grandchildren, Michael Kash and Melanie Kash, both of Columbia, Robin Polk of Fayetteville, Christopher Morris of Columbia, Danielle Wise and Jodi Wise of Canton, Mich.; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Morris; two sisters and three brothers.

Pallbearers will be Don Wright, John Tidey, Christopher Morris, Chris Eakes, Jim Morris and Gerald Mims.

Melba P. Lawwell

SHELBYVILLE - Melba P. Lawwell, 72, of Shelbyville, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Bedford County Nursing Home.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gowen-Smith Chapel with the Rev. J.T. Miller and Larry Chatman officiating. Burial will be in Crowell's Chapel.

She was the daughter of the late Mary Ida Embler and Tom Runion. She was a member of Crowell's Chapel Lutheran Church. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Malcome and Fernandel Runion; sisters, Ellen White, Maci Burgett, Birtie Burgett, Nell Creson and Dean Carroll.

Survivors include her daughters, Linda S. Robinson of Columbia and Debra K. Bradford of Lewisburg; a son, Donald W. Cambell Jr. of Shelbyville; husband, James Lawwell of Shelbyville; a sister, Christina Edwards of McCains and Virgie Krieg of Unionville; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren and five step great-grandchildren.

C.O. Herston

Mr. Collins O'Neal Herston, 92, resident of Poplar Estates, died Tuesday, February 17, 2004 at NHC Hillview.

Services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Friday, at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with the Rev. Georgina Bearden officiating. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. in Blue Water Cemetery in Center Star, Alabama. The family will visit with friends from 4 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com.

The Lauderdale County, Ala. native was the son of the late Jack Herston and Ella Mitchell Herston. He was married to Ruby Beddingfield Herston who preceded him in death in 1973. He was a longtime resident of West 15th Street. Mr. Herston was a former member of Columbia Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and Shriners. He was an electrician and following his retirement he enjoyed renovating old homes in Maury County.

He is survived by one son, Robert O'Neil Herston of Nashville; one daughter, Mrs. Shelby Jo (Eugene) Palmer of Worcester, Mass.; two sisters, Mrs. Daphene (Gene) Caruthers, Mrs. Irene (Toby) Sneed, both of Columbia; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Rachel Chapman

LAWRENCEBURG - Rachel Marie Estes Chapman, 76, of Lawrenceburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at Crockett Hospital.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Neal Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

She was the daughter of the late Josie Mae Watkins and Bascom Estes. She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, James Chapman of Lawrenceburg; brothers, Robert Estes of Columbia and J.B. Estes of Goodspring; sisters, Okalene Rowe of Petersburg and Wilma Jean Vaughn of Hohenwald.
