Mr. Johnny G. Starr, 66, a resident of Deercreek Estates in Bon Aqua, died Friday, January 9, 2004 at his home.
A gathering to celebrate the life and music of Johnny Starr will be conducted Saturday, February 21, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at the Pizza Pub and Picking in Bon Aqua.
Born in Buckhorn, Pa., he was the son of the late Mathias Knorr and Della Walters and husband of Faith Starr, whom he shared his life and love of music with. He was a contract painter and an entertainer, writing and playing songs with the late Johnny Cash.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Samuel Delius of Delaware and Carl Knorr of Marion, IL; four step-children; six step-grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; several brothers and sisters in Pennsylvania.

Clyde Austin Carpenter

Mr. Clyde Austin Carpenter, 71, died Tuesday, February 3, 2004 at his residence on Oscar Green Road in the Primm Springs Community.
A memorial service for Mr. Carpenter will be conducted Thursday evening, February 5, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Reverend Brian Weisinger and Dee Kelley officiating.. Private family services will be held at the Polk Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. The family will visit with friends Thursday following the service in the funeral home lounge.
The Union City, Indiana native was the son of the late M.O. and Frances Cooper Carpenter. Clyde and the former Carolyn Hite were residents of the Primm Springs Community. He was retired owner and operator of National Auto Detail and member of the Grace Nazarene Church in Columbia.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kay Carpenter (Dee) Kelley of Oklahoma City, OK; three sons, Tony (Robyn) Carpenter of Phillips Ranch, CA, Ken (Devon) Carpenter of the Primm Springs Community, and Rod (Carol) Carpenter of Brentwood, TN; fourteen grandchildren, Nathan Carpenter, Caylee Carpenter, and Zachary Carpenter all of California, Sutton Kelley and Savannah Kelley both of Oklahoma City, OK, Cole Carpenter, Peyton Carpenter, Logan Carpenter, Bennett Carpenter, Claire Carpenter, Davis Carpenter, and Amelia Carpenter all of the Primm Springs Community, Blaze Carpenter and Cannon Carpenter both of Brentwood, TN.

Mr. Ray Lewis Grooms, 67, died Wednesday February 4, 2004, at his residence on the Campbellsville Pike in the Southport Community.
Funeral services for Mr. Grooms will be conducted, Friday, February 6, 2004, at 2:00 p.m. at the Williams Columbia Funeral Home with Elmer Lusk, Reverend Dickey Lindsey and Rick Points officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The Maury County native was the son of the late, William “Bill” and Grace McCullom Grooms and the husband of Betty Lentz Grooms. He was a farmer and retired from Monsanto Chemical Company in the maintenance department.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Patti Blocker, David Ray Grooms, Debra (Marvin) Osborne and Pam (Tony) Cobble, all of Columbia; three sisters, Thelma (Ray) Floyd, Kathleen McCoy and Annie Pearl, all of Mt. Pleasant; two brothers, Harold (Jessi) Grooms of Mt. Pleasant and Alvin Grooms of Columbia; six grandchildren, Heather Blocker, Austin Pope, Prestin Pope, Tara Stanfill, Brittney Grooms and Whittney Grooms, all of Columbia.

Mrs. Norma Fay Strickland McPherson, 87, a resident of Denham Avenue in Columbia, left this life to be with her Lord on Thursday, February 5, 2004 at Maury Regional Hospital, Columbia, Tennessee.
Funeral services for Mrs. McPherson will be conducted Saturday, February 7, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Reverend Gene Shelton, Reverend Brian Wiesinger, and Dennis Farrell officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The Albion, Michigan native was the daughter of the late Guy Earl and Ada Wilmarth Strickland and wife of Noble Burton McPherson of Columbia. She received her B.A. in Education from the Michigan State Normal College and was a homemaker. She was affiliated in recent years with Grace Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Douglas McPherson of Columbia, TN; a daughter, Colleen (Dennis) Farrell of Columbia, TN; seven grandchildren, Douglas Wayne (Sue) Farrell of Mason, MI, Julie Kay (Todd) Ovenhouse of Howell, MI, Christopher Levi Farrell and Jeremiah Burton Farrell both of Columbia, TN, Elizabeth Fay Farrell (Joe) Patterson of Madison, AL, Rachel Elizabeth McPherson and Patrick Douglas McPherson both of Charlotte, MI; three sisters, Estelle Champney of Michigan, Frances Conrad of Menomonee Falls, WI, and Dora French of Albion, MI and several loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Roscoe Strickland of Los Angeles, CA.

Mr. John Wallace Beard, 75, Security Guard at Wal -Mart and a resident of South High Street in Columbia, died Saturday, February 7, 2004, at Maury Regional Hospital.
Funeral services for Mr. Beard will be conducted Tuesday February 10, 2004 at 11:00 a. m. at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Reverend Bob Adair, Judge Jimmy Matthews, and Donald Paul officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Sunday and Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The Maury County native was the son of the late Barney and Ada F. Brady Beard. He was a former employee of the Maury County Highway Department. He was a Constable of 2nd District for 28 years and a member of the Junior Order of Police. He attended the First Church of the Nazarene.
He is survived by his three daughters, Maxine (Donald) Grooms, Patricia Bryant and Reba (Ray) Kuykendall all of Columbia, TN; grandchildren, Thomas Harrison Bryant, Cristy Bryant, Beth Kuykendall, Steven Kuykendall all of Columbia, TN; a great-grandson Logan Bryant of Columbia, TN; a special friend, Sylvia Elaine Pope of Columbia, TN; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ronald “Pop” Beard, Clyde Beard, and James Beard.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Wiley, Ray Kuykendall, Steven Kuykendall, Caleb Haynes, Glenn Rose, and Donald Grooms.

Mr. Howard G. Allen, 87, a resident of Timberwood Drive in Columbia, died Saturday, February 28, 2004 at Life Care Center.

The Lauderdale County, Alabama native was the son of the late Turner Nelson and Ella Belew Allen and husband of the late Lorene Sandlin Allen. He was a tire maker for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and member of the First Baptist Church.
He is survived by a son, Donald R. (Janet) Allen of Columbia, TN; a sister, Birdie Killen of Greenhill, AL; a son-in-law, Willard White of Orange, CA; two granddaughters, Kimberly Allen Lovell of Mt. Pleasant, TN and Robin Allen Tipton of Bristol, TN.

Mrs. Alta Nowlin Powers, 88, a longtime Mt. Pleasant resident, died Saturday, February 28, 2004 at NHC Columbia.
Funeral services for Mrs. Powers will be conducted, at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday March 3, 2004 at Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Reverend Phillip Wright officiating. Visitation with the family will be Tuesday from 4:00 p. m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery.
The Maury County native was the daughter of the late Herschel Reams Nowlin and the late Annie Potts Nowlin and the widow of O. B. Powers who died in 1978. She was a 1934 graduate of Hay Long High School. She was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant.
She is survived by a daughter, Sally (John) Matlack of Columbia, TN and a son, Richard R. (Pat) Powers of Mt. Pleasant, TN; one granddaughter, Stephanie A. Powers of Mt. Pleasant; three grandsons, Michael J. (Margaret) Matlack of Dallas, TX, Matthew P. (Shannon) Matlack of Columbia, MO, Dr. R. Reams Powers (Carey) of Columbia, TN; three great-grandchildren, Betsy Matlack and Sam Matlack of Dallas, TX and Margaret Patton Powers of Columbia, TN.
