Eleanore G. DeYoung died peacefully on August 11, 2012, at her home in Shannondale of Maryville in Maryville, Tenn. Eleanore was born
August 21, 1918, in Chicago, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob LeNoble and Nettie VerHaar LeNoble; and her eldest daughter, Janet Grant (Bill). Survivors include her children, Ellie DeYoung (Joe Siudara), Hardy DeYoung (Sarah) and Marti DeYoung (Al Distefano); grandchildren, Lisa Kornfeld (Gregg) and Elizabeth Rich; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Ian Kornfeld; dear friend, Florence Johnson (Harry); siblings, John LeNoble and Lucille LeNoble; nieces and nephews; and an extensive network of friends and their families who are our extended family. Her family will always be grateful for the love and care she received from the staff at Shannondale. Eleanore earned degrees from Hope College, Wayne State and Rutgers universities, served the congregation of Redford Presbyterian Church (MI), and Nassau Presbyterian Church (N.J.), taught English at Hightstown High School (N.J.), joined Education Testing Service (ETS), and retired at the age of 80, then volunteered at the neighborhood kindergarten in Hamilton Sq. (N.J.). She loved her parents, siblings, nieces/nephews, and was proud and devoted to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She cherished her lifelong friends, extended family and new friends in Maryville, where she moved in 2002 to be near her son and daughter-in-law. She was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church. Eleanore was a positive thinker and champion for Hope, Belief, Acceptance, Equality, Education and the Empowerment of others. She will be missed and always remembered. The celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2012, at the Shannondale of Maryville Chapel, 804 Shannondale Way, Maryville, TN 37803. She worked at Rack Room Shoes. Amelia was a beloved daughter, granddaughter and sister. Galen Walter Johnson, Jr.
Galen Walter Johnson, Jr., age 83, passed away Friday, August 3, 2012. Galen was born
October 7, 1928, in Avery County, North Carolina. He was a 1946 graduate of Everett High School, received his Bachelor’s Degree from Maryville College and his Master’s Degree from the University of Tennessee. He taught and coached in Richards, Mo. and Porter High School in Maryville where the gymnasium is named in his honor. He was a long-time principal at Porter High School and later at William Blount High School. After his retirement, he was an assistant girls’ basketball coach at Maryville College. He is in the TSSAA and Blount County Sports Halls of Fame, the Daily Times Wall of Fame and has received various other recognitions. Preceded in death by parents Galen and Hazel Johnson and sister, Lila Myers. Survivors include loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Betty Pierce Johnson; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Mike Brewington; Stephanie and Jerry Thompson; Gaye and Mark Hasty; Dawn and Tony Reagan; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; Lance, Laura and Brantley Grooms; Nick, Heather, Dawson and Taylor Grooms; Mark, Jr., Tabitha, Bailey and Payton Hasty; Marissa, Allen and Troy Lambert; Mindy Reagan; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Elaine Johnson and David and Janet Johnson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris Crowder, Sandy and David Coster and Sylvia Webb; many nieces and nephews. Johnny Reed Walker, age 69, of Maryville, passed away Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at his home. He was retired from the 134th Air Refueling Wing of the Tennessee Air National Guard and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He loved music and nature. He was preceded in death by his parents, John “Ned” and Lenis Derryberry Walker; sisters, Mary Frances Neill and Pat Taylor; brother, James Walker. She was a present member of Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church and a former member of First Baptist Church for 65 years. Bettie was a graduate of Finch Junior College in New York City. She was past co-chair of the Dogwood Arts Festival, past president of the Junior Service League and past board member of the Smoky Mountains Heritage Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Townsend “Townie” Anderson, daughter-in-law Cathy Anderson. Mae (Reed) Ownby Keener
Mae (Reed) Ownby Keener, age 88, of Maryville, and formerly of Sevierville, Tenn., passed away Friday, July 20, 2012, at her daughter’s home. Mrs. Keener was born
March 18, 1924, in Sevier County, Tenn. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She came to know the Lord as her Savior at the age of 8, was a member of First Baptist Church, Sevierville, and attended First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Maryville. Mae (as she was called by her friends) taught 2nd grade Sunday School for 20-plus years and was a leader in the Women’s Missionary Union at First Baptist Sevierville. She was a member of the Sevierville Eastern Star and Ladies’ Bowling League in Maryville. Mae worked in her early years at the Sevierville Hosiery Mill. She was a talented seamstress and master gardener. Mae had a loving marriage to Robert Thurman Ownby from 1945 until his death in 1979. She was blessed with a second marriage to Kenneth Keener in 1981 until his death in January 2012. Mrs. Keener raised her children to love the Lord and obey His word. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert Thurman Ownby and Kenneth A. Keener; parents, Millie Moore Reed Reagan and Hubert Reed; sisters, Celie Reed Allen; and infant sister; brothers, Millard, Henry, Joe, Arnold Reed; and infant brother.
