Bobby Joe ‘Smoe’ Cardin, age 61, of Madisonville, passed away Thursday, November 10, 2011, at Loudon Healthcare Center, in Loudon. Preceded in death by parents, Roy and Geneva Cardin; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Buford and Inez Albright. Survivors: wife, Rhonda Cardin; daughter, Hannah Bird; grandson, Ethan Bird; brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Peggy Cardin; nephews, Drew Cardin, Erik and Carrie Cardin; great niece, Caidyn Cardin; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Marvin and Brenda Albright; sister-in-law, Betty Jo Calhoun; and other extended family and many, many friends. T. Garvice Murphree
The Rev. T. Garvice Murphree, 87, of Asheville, NC, died Tuesday, November 8, 2011, after a long struggle with lymphoma. A Mississippi native, he is the son of the late Clayton E. and Connie Ellard Murphree, of Calhoun County, MS, and husband of the late Dorothy Russell Murphree. A graduate of Mississippi College and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he served as Education Minister in seven churches in Mississippi, South Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee in a 37-year career in ministry. He also served as president of the Southeastern Religious Education Association and was a longtime denominational training and conference leader. He served as a Navy pilot during WWII and maintained a private flying license for many years afterward, serving as chaplain and pilot for the Civil Air Patrol. An avid gardener, music lover, and writer, he published two books of poetry, “Melted Tomorrows” “and Strangers & Angels, ” as well as numerous religious education curriculum materials, and coauthored a book, “Understanding Youth, ” with his wife Dorothy R. Murphree. Civic activities included volunteer service and board positions with several nonprofit agencies. He is survived by two daughters, Brenda Murphree (Zoe Rhine) of Asheville, NC, and Crystal Murphree-Holden (Drew Holden) of Lexington, SC, and one granddaughter, Courtney Holden, of Columbia, SC. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, November 20, 2011, at First Baptist Church, Asheville, 5 Oak St, with the Rev. Dr. Guy Sayles officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:45 pm, and again following the service. Memorials may be made to CarePartners Hospice in Asheville, or to the First Baptist Church of Asheville Memorial Garden Fund.

Jessie Darlene (O’Neal) Able, age 54, of Maryville, went to be with her Heavenly Father Thursday, November 10, 2011, at her home after a battle with lung cancer. She was a member of the Heritage Church of God. She was preceded in death by her father, Fred D. O’Neal; grandmother, Florence “Granny Johnson” Gibbs; father-in-law, George Able; and brother-in-law, Gary Able. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Billy Ray “Bill” Able; stepdaughter, Casey Able; stepgrandson, William “Willie” Able; her loving mother, Johnnie Edwina O’Neal; brothers, Tim and Dennis O’Neal; sisters and brothers-in-law, Donna and R. L. Margaret Leonard Stinnett, age 97, of Maryville, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, May 6, 2012. She was one of the oldest living members of Grandview Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Stinnett. Also preceded in death by her parents, John James and Hattie Mae Leonard; brothers, Harvey, James, Dennis, Thomas, John and Dana Leonard; sisters, Loretta Mincy and Hattie Mae Smith; stepdaughter, Barbara Every. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Ann Leonard. She has 20 nieces and nephews. She was the great-aunt and great-great-aunt of several nieces and nephews. Robert Douglas Petroski
Robert Douglas Petroski, age 52, of Poplar Grove, Ill., died Wednesday, May 2, 2012, in his home, following an extended illness. He was born
on July 10, 1959, in Chicago, Ill.; the son of Anthony and Donna (Stanton) Petroski. Doug graduated from Downers Grove South High School and attended the University of Iowa. He worked for United Airlines O’Hare Airport for 26 years. He is survived by his parents, Anthony and Donna Petroski of Maryville; sister, Christine (Joe) Sullivan of Atlanta, Ga.; his significant other, Patricia Bartels; aunts, uncles and cousins, and his faithful dog, Booger. Following cremation a private ceremony was performed.
Deanna Echols Brabson
Deanna Echols Brabson, age 29, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2012, at University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn. Deanna was born
May 13, 1982, in Knoxville, to Arnetta Cobb and the late Dennis Echols, Sr. She was a member of Mother Love Baptist Church where she was also a member of the Gospel Choir and an alumnus of Alcoa High School Class of 2000. She continued her education, graduating from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management minoring in computer information systems. Deanna served top of her field being employed by Clayton Vanderbilt Mortgage as a Title II processor for 8 years. She was a loving wife, mother and sister. Deanna enjoyed spending time with her family, motorcycle riding, and being an avid runner. She was preceded in death by her father, Dennis Echols Sr.; brother, Dennis Echols Jr.; grandparents, Della Cobb, Cornell and Gertrude Echols. Mrs. Juanita Diggs
On May 8, 2012, Mrs. Juanita Diggs, age 92, passed from this mortal sphere to her heavenly home to be with her Lord. She was born
on July 6, 1919, in Bernie, Mo. Her life was spent supporting her husband, Eugene Diggs, on their cotton and soybean farm in southeast Missouri. For the last four years, she has lived at Sterling House in Maryville. She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene Diggs; parents, Ollie Kitrel Floyd and Joseph Kitrel; stepfather, Amos Floyd; sisters, Marcell Floyd, Wilma Snow; and brothers, Dawsy, D.L., Doyle, and Tom. She is survived by her sister, Eunice Bost of Dunklin County, Mo.; daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Dr. Charles Raper of Maryville; granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Hope and Todd Huston of Gastonia, N.C., Amy and Angelo Bufalino of Memphis, Tenn., Jennifer and Marc Funk of Signal Mountain, Tenn., and Cheryl and Chris Triko of Knoxville. She was also great-grandmother and beloved “Tanmama” to eight, Morgan and Sam Stout, Alex and Zachary McWhirter, Elizabeth and Liam Funk, and William and Michael Triko. Mrs. Diggs was a life-long member of Forest Grove Baptist Church in Cardwell, Mo. Services are pending presently and will be held at Heath Funeral Home in Paragould, Arkansas. John Franklin “Frank” Smith, age 76, of Maryville, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2012, peacefully at home. Frank was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church and operated the concessions at the Knoxville News Sentinel for 39 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Carter Smith; brothers, David and Herman Smith; sisters, Kay Eschler and Geraldine Miller. Survivors include his wife, Orvie Smith; son and daughter-in-law, John Franklin Smith II and wife Jo of Christiana, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Steven Ingold of Louisville; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Maxine and Arnold Eschler of Phoenix, Ariz. A celebration of Frank’s life was held at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 7, 2012, in the Smith Trinity Chapel with Rev. Kenny Armstrong officiating.
