Frank ‘Boomer’ Boring, Jr.
Frank “Boomer” Boring Jr., age 83, of Alcoa, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 12, 2011, at the home of Justin Mock and Leonard and Shirley Stinnett. Mr. Boring taught social studies and driver’s education at Central High School from 1955 until his retirement in 1982. He served as the assistant football coach from 1955-1957, head football coach from 1958-1972, and also coached baseball and golf. Frank was awarded Coach of the Year in football and served as athletic director for many years. Frank graduated from Alcoa High School and went on to play on the 1951 University of Tennessee National Championship Football Team and was a member of Blount County Sports Hall of Fame. Mr. Boring served his country in the United States Army as a commissioned officer. Frank was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Margie M. Boring; daughter, Gay Allison Boring; godchildren, Kim Stinnett Mock and Jim Stinnett Jr.; mother, Sally Gay Boring; father, Frank Boring Sr.; brother, T.J. Boring; wife, Marybelle Boring; sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Willie McClellan; and sister-in-law, Doris McCauley. He is survived by brother and sister-in-law, Vernon and Olive Boring; sister-in-law, Rhella Boring; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Betty and Clifton Stubblefield, Lois and Richard Patterson, and Shirley and Leonard Stinnett; brother, David Mills; sister-in-law, Vada Mills; numerous loving nieces and nephews; and special friends, Hugh and Barbara Roberts; and his extended family at Hertz Rental McGhee Tyson Airport. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Blount Memorial Hospice and requests donations be made in lieu of flowers in Frank’s memory. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 14, from 4-6 p.m. in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, Chapman Highway. Funeral services will follow at 6 p.m., Rev. Ruby Lea Reagan, age 84, of Alcoa, passed away Monday, January 30, 2012, at the home of her son in Soddy Daisy. She was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Carroll Murphy. Steve Allen Cable, age 56, of Knoxville, passed away Thursday, December 8, 2011. He was friendly with everyone; he would go out of his way to talk to anyone. He served in the Army; he was stationed at Redstone Arsenal. He was a graduate Karns High School. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. R. L. Whaley, age 80, of Alcoa, died Friday, December 2, 2011, at the family home. Mr. Whaley was a longtime member and past deacon of First Baptist Church of Alcoa and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was retired from Rohm and Haas of Knoxville after 38 years of service. Pamela Faye Gilmore, age 56, made her transition from earth to Heaven, Thursday December 1, 2011, at her Alcoa residence surrounded by her loved ones. Pam was preceded in death by her father and mother, Tyree and Ollie Mae Gilmore; brother, Wyman; and sister, Angel Louise. Survivors, children, Kevin Gilmore and Tasha Mills; stepmother Louise Gilmore; sisters, Shari (Jimmie) McRae, and Melanie Gilmore; brothers, Tyris (Mary), Trent, Darren and Chris (Shon) Gilmore. Joseph Michael ‘Mike’ Dennis
Joseph Michael “Mike” Dennis, age 68, passed away at home on December 2, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents, Auburn and Robbie Weeks Dennis; and his brother Ben Dennis. Mike is survived by his wife of 26 years, Sandy Dennis; children, Monika David, Eric Dennis, Chipper Wyatt, Ashleigh Jones and Josh Dennis; brother, Bob Dennis; sister, Sara Dennis; grandchildren, Trey Belcher, Taylor Dennis, Jared Belcher, Joe Dennis, Bryce Belcher, Wyatt Jones, Emma Wyatt, Ella Wyatt and Amaleigh Jones; daughters-in-law, Lisa Dennis and Janice Wyatt; sons-in-law, Danny Jones and Jim David; and his best friend, Bobby Everett; and his many other friends from the “Newsroom.” Since coming to Blount County, Mike was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, First Methodist of Maryville, St. John United Methodist Church, Broadway United Methodist Church, and for the past 17 years has been a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and Happy Helpers Sunday School Class. Mike attended high school in Guin, Ala., lettered in three sports, and was inducted into the Marion County Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. Mike was a four-year football scholarship recipient at the University of North Alabama where he was an honor graduate in 1969. He served honorably in the United States Army Reserve for 12 years. Mike worked as a Park Ranger for the United States Park Service from 1969 to 1980 serving on Natchez Trace Parkway, Fort Sumpter National Park, and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He was a sworn federal law enforcement officer, certified in dive rescue and emergency medical technician. He served on dignitary protection details for the Queen of England and Lady Bird Johnson. Mike retired from ALCOA after 25 years working as a supervisor in the pot rooms. Mike loved the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and his favorite pastime was fishing the streams in Tennessee and North Carolina. Geraldine A. Crye, age 75, of Maryville, passed away Thursday, December 1, 2011, at Blount Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Williamson Chapel United Methodist Church, an avid flower and vegetable gardener and a quilter. She also raised laying hens and loved everything outdoors including fishing and hiking. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Warren and Helen Correll Hearon; brother, Arnold Hearon; sister, Kathy Coleman; nephew, Mark Coleman. Survivors include husband of 55 years, Joe Lloyd Crye; daughter and son-in-law, Kandy and Jeff Hodge; son, Douglas Crye; grandson, Nicholas Hodge; granddaughter, Jennifer Hodge; special friends, Johnny and Martha Baldwin, all of Maryville. Bill R. Perry
Bill R. Perry, age 86, departed this life Thursday, December 1, 2011, at Silvercrest Manor in Crestview, Florida. Bill graduated with the Alcoa High School Class of 1947. Bill served in the United States Navy during World War II and later served during the Korean Conflict. After his Naval Discharge he became a Registered Nurse and lived and worked at numerous hospitals in the Chicago, Ill., area for the next 40 years. Bill is survived by two sisters, Katherine Leonard McMahan and husband Clarence, Betty Leonard Tallent, and husband Claude; several nieces and nephews; along with special niece, Brenda Loken. Ruth Cate Burns, 92, of Chattanooga, died Friday, December 2, 2011. Mrs. Burns had lived most of her life in Maryville, only moving to Chattanooga in 2006 to be near family. She was a longtime member of Maryville First Baptist Church. Mrs. Burns was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Burns; parents, Tim and Velma Murrell Cate; brother, Fred Cate; and sister, Zita Marie Jenkins. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kay Marie and Hugh Kendall, Carol and Jeff Minnis, both of Chattanooga; three grandchildren, Jonathan (Colleen) Kendall of Agoura Hills, Calif., David (JanaRae) Kendall of Knoxville, Carrie Minnis of Chattanooga; one great-grandson, Caleb Kendall; and several nieces and nephews. Richard McCarter, age 68, went to be with the Lord on December 3, 2011, and died peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loved ones. Richard was a highly decorated U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He was the loving and devoted husband of Ruth Ann McCarter; adoring grandfather to Madison Griffeth of Greenback; cherished father of Kelly McCarter of Greenback and Melissa McCarter and husband Greg Bevins of Kodak. Other survivors include siblings, Alvin, Everett, Garfield, Charles, Ruby Brookshire and Linda Cook; and best friends, Greg Ryan and Eugene Akins.
