Dr. Paul Wilfried Hoffmann
Dr. Paul Wilfried Hoffmann, longtime physician and former Blount Memorial Hospital chief of staff, died Friday, September 30, 2011, at the hospital. He was 74.
The doctor suffered cardiac arrest on Tuesday in a grocery store and never regained consciousness, according to his wife, Mary Hoffmann.
Hoffmann enjoyed a long career in medicine in Blount County, starting as an ear, nose and throat doctor in 1972, until his retirement in early February 2010.
“He liked ear surgery, because he loved a challenge and working with smaller parts, where the success rate was very good, ” his wife said.
His two children, Paul E. Hoffmann and Susie Hoffmann, both followed in his footsteps, becoming physicians in specialized areas.
“He was a great leader and mentor, well-respected in the medical field, ” Susie Hoffmann said. “A lot of people have told me he was instrumental in helping Blount Memorial Hospital, and was a kind person.”
Other successes included a stint as a flight surgeon and lieutenant colonel for the Tennessee Air National Guard until retirement.
Even after retirement, Hoffman volunteered at Blount Speech and Hearing.
Not always the successful physician, Hoffmann survived one of the worst bombings of World War II, the bombing of Dresden, Germany, in February 1945.
“He came to the United States with $50 in his pocket and carrying a suitcase, ” said his son, Paul Hoffmann.
He worked several jobs as he put himself through college, then medical school.
Hoffmann moved to Maryville because it reminded him of Bavaria, with the mountains and kind people, his son said.
At Hoffmann’s request, his body was donated to the UT Memphis School of Medicine.
