Hugh Newman
ETOWAH, Tenn. - Hugh Virgil Newman died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in an Etowah health care facility. He was 85.
He was a retired paint contractor and a member of Mars Hill United Methodist Church.
He was the husband of the late Mary Newman and was preceded in death by five sons, Johnny, Ray, Raymond, Harold and Billy Newman.
Survivors include two daughters, Janie Buckner, Etowah, and Gail Guffey, Hollywood, Fla.; two sons, Gerald and Syms Newman, Etowah; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Mars Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Henry Groseclose, Tom Mullins and Joe Kemper officiating.
Burial will be in Mars Hill cemetery.
Visitation will be today 7 to 9 p.m. at Bordwine Funeral Home, Etowah.
Grace Noles
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Grace June Noles died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 66.
She was a native of Spruce Pine, N.C.
Survivors include two sons, Rickie Moorefield, Cleveland, and Ronnie Moorefield, Sevierville, Tenn.; one daughter, Linda Clawson, North Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters, Vivian Summers, Morgantown, N.C., and Frances Henson; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services were Saturday.
Arrangements are by Covenant Funeral Service.
Thelma Rhodes
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Thelma Ruth Rhodes died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 88.
She was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Embroidery Club and Magnolia Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by one son, Stephen Rhodes, and a great-granddaughter, Lauren Benton.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard Rhodes; one son, L.C. Rhodes Jr., Chattanooga; one daughter, Barbara Blake, Chattanooga; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Kevin Colvard officiating.
Memorial Contributions may be made to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Visitation will be Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Grissom Funeral Home.
Shirley Stephens
SWEETWATER, Tenn. - Shirley Maxine Byrd Stephens died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at her home. She was 61.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Lewis Stephens.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Sherlin, Riceville, Tenn., and Patsy Heron, Cleveland, Tenn.; one son, Carl Stephens, Riceville; two brothers, Harry and Carl Byrd, both of Sweetwater; two sisters, Margaret McKee and Butchie Gibby, Sweetwater; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Sweetwater Memory Chapel with the Rev. James Harris officiating.
Burial will be in Sweetwater Valley Memorial Park.
Juanita Barber
Juanita Tittle Barber of Los Angeles, formerly of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., died Monday, Jan. 11, 1999.
Arrangements will be announced by Taylor Funeral Home.
Ellen Bennett
Ellen 'Kitty' Bennett died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at the home of her daughter. She was 71.
A memorial service will be held today at 1:30 p.m. at First Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Steil officiating.
There will be no visitation at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
Gladys Blakeney
Gladys Grace Blakeney died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999. She was 82.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Abbott officiating.
Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. and one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.
Evelyn Blakley
Evelyn S. Blakley, formerly of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in Fairborn, Ohio. She was 73.
Graveside services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Chattanooga National cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
There will be no visitation at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
George Bolus
George W. Bolus, a longtime Chattanooga businessman and an active boater, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in a Panama City Beach, Fla., hospital. He was 74.
He served in the Merchant Marines and as a second lieutenant in the U.S. National Guard. He founded and operated Esquire Dry Cleaning for more than 40 years, and was the owner of Century 21 Bolus Realty for many years.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Dr. Bill Owens officiating.
Entombment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
Otis Daniel
Otis Daniel died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 69.
He was retired from Chattanooga Bakery and was a member of Thankful Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Daniel, and a sister, Olivia Jackson.
Survivors include one son, George Thornhill, Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Olivia Bush, Chattanooga; two brothers, Eugene Johnson and Lee Otis Johnson, both of Chattanooga; four sisters, Louise Flanagan, Alberta Clayton, Marie McCoy and Delores Posley, all of Chattanooga; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services will be today at 1 p.m. at Thankful Baptist Church with pastor Oscar Lockhart officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

She was a member of the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Johnson, and two sisters, Ada Hines, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Thelma Whatley, Rome, Ga.
Survivors include niece, Eddie Louise Shropshire, Chattanooga, four nephews, Rudolph Ware Jr., and Louis Ware Jr., Kokomo, Ind., and Hines Whatley and Douglas Whatley, Rome; and great niece, Petronia Johnson Ware, Lavergne, Tenn.
Funeral services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Rose of Sharon Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Walton officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
The family will receive friends after noon Monday at the Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home Avondale Chapel.
