CLEVELAND, Tenn. - John R. 'Bull Rush' Hughes died Thursday, April 1, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 98.
He was a member of Mount Olive Church of God.
He served as a Bradley County constable for several years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Hughes; one daughter, Geneva Hughes; one son, J.R. Hughes; amd two sisters, Louise Hill and Pearl Price.
Survivors include nine children, Faye Cofer, Georgetown, Tenn.; Barbara Hooker, Kay Stokes, Hoyt Hughes, Delmas 'Shorty' Hughes, Billy Hughes, Rev. Sammy Hughes, and Donnie Hughes, all of Cleveland; two brothers, Clifford Hughes, Cleveland, and Charlie Hughes, Dalton, Ga.; two sisters, Mae Davis and Polly McAmis, both of Cleveland; 34 grandchildren; and 54 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Sears officiating.
Burial will be at Mount Olive cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Howard Johnston
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Howard A. Johnston died Tuesday, March 30, 1999. He was 88.
A graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. in Chattanooga Memorial Park with Harvey T. Booher officiating.

John Kilgore
McMINNVILLE, Tenn. - John A. Kilgore died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in an area hospital. He was 71.
Mr. Kilgore had lived in Chattanooga for over 30 years before moving to McMinnville.
He retired from DuPont after 22 years, was a U.S. Army veteran and attended First Assembly of God, Smart Station.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel Kilgore; one daughter, Sue K. Rapp, Charlottesville, Va.; one son, Mickey Kilgore, Hixson; two sisters, Alma Chadwick, Chattanooga, and Margaret 'Marge' Rhodes, Bryant, Ala.; and six grandchildren.
Services will be today at 12:30 p.m. at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Steven Lewis officiating.
Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 11 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
George Layne
WHITWELL, Tenn. - George Prince Layne died Thursday, April 1, 1999, in a Chattanooga hospital. He was 84.
He was the widower of Pearlee Griffith Layne and a member of Mineral Springs Church of God.
Survivors include three daughters, Katherine Basham and Eula Gholston, both of Whitwell, Myrtle Jeffery, Chattanooga; a brother, Jess Layne, Whitwell; three sisters, Pearlie Long, Dallas, Minnie Lee Long and Hester Russell, both of Whitwell; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Whitwell Memorial Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Basham and the Rev. James Ramsey officiating.
Burial will be in Pine Hill cemetery.
Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. until 10 p.m. at the funeral home.

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Pearl Matthews died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, in a local health care facility. She was 95.

Burial will be in Bankhead cemetery in Mentone.
William Ottman
ETOWAH, Tenn. - William H. 'Bill' Ottman died Monday, March 29, 1999, at his home. He was 70.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the South Chapel of Bordwine Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Crockett officiating.
Entombment will be in the Green Hill Mausoleum.

TRACY CITY, Tenn. - Nina Ann Parsons died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at her home. She was 48.
She was the daughter of the late Herley and Berta Parson.
Survivors include her husband, Charles E. Parsons; a son, Joshua Shane Parsons, Tracy City; three brothers, Hershel and Troy Parsons, both of Tracy City, and Bill Parson, Dalton; two sisters, Helen Dykes and Olline Roberts, Tracy City; several nieces and nephews.

Jack Perkins
SPRING CITY, Tenn. - Levolia 'Jack' Perkins died Sunday, March 28, 1999, in a Chattanooga hospital. He was 80.
Mr. Perkins moved to the Rhea County area from Louisville, Ky., where he had lived for more than 40 years. He also had lived in Chattanooga for a short time.
He was the widower of Adell Reynolds Spencer Perkins, a member of the National Roofers Union 147 and a Baptist.
Survivors include a son, Tony Berry; stepson, Thomas E. Spencer, both of Louisville; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Vaughn Funeral Home with the Rev. James Guthrie officiating.
Burial will be in Petersburg cemetery in Spring City.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

James Elrod
PALATKA, Fla. - James Matthew 'Jim' Elrod died Thursday, April 15, 1999, at Putnam Community Medical Center. He was 82.
The Chattanooga native was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro and Peabody College in Nashville.
He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Palatka for 48 years and served as advisor for the Key Club at the high school.
He began his work with the Putnam County School System as a biology teacher. He organized and was a director of the Putnam County Teachers Credit Union. He started the DCT program at the high school and later served as supervisor of the vocational program for the school system.
He retired in 1982 after 25 years, working as the personnel director for the Putnam County School Board.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Pinkleton Elrod; two sisters, Bobbie E. Tomerlin, Austin, Texas, and Frances Lorraine Elrod, Chattanooga; five nephews and three nieces.
Services will be Sunday at St. James United Methodist Church in Palatka.
Burial will be in Oak Hill cemetery.

SANTA MARIA, Calif. - Lila Rose Moore Maples died Thursday, April 15, 1999, in California. She was 73.
She was born and raised in Chattanooga and was the widow of Frank Maples.
Survivors include two daughters, Gail Saragos, Tast, Calif., and Tammy Anderson, Santa Maria, Calif.; son, Nick Comstock, Bakersfield, Calif.; two sisters, Betty Walker, Ringgold, Ga., and Mary Shearer, Fort Oglethorpe; a brother, Edward Moore, Ringgold; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in Santa Maria, Calif.

Rufus Benning
Rufus Benning Sr. died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 82.
Mr. Benning retired from U.S. Pipe and Foundry after 42 years and was a member of Greater St. Mary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Benning; two daughters, Linda Benning and Brenda Davis, both of Chattanooga; four sons, Mahood Abdullah, Rufus Jr., Larry and Dewayne Benning, all of Chattanooga; 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Greater St. Mary Baptist Church with the Rev. Grady Woods and other ministers officiating.
Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Chattanooga National cemetery.
