George Shattles
SPRING CITY - George Shattles died Sunday, May 23, 1999, in an area hospital. He was 54.

Mr. Shattles was the son of the late Charles and Minnie Craighead Shattles.

He was a graduate of Spring City High School and a member of the Smoky Mountain Antique Tractor and Engine Association. He retired in 1998 after 25 years from La-Z-Boy Corp. in Dayton.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Spring City.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Moore Shattles, Spring City; son, Brent Shattles, Spring City; two sisters, Mary Coffey, Athens, Tenn., and Mildred Lee Jones, Olive Branch, Miss.

Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Vaughn Funeral Home with the Rev. Denzel Brown officiating.

Burial will be in Spring City cemetery.

Mae Spence
BENTON - Mae Casada Spence died Sunday, May 23, 1999, in a Cleveland, Tenn., hospital. She was 91.

Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Higgins Funeral Home with the Rev. Todd Davis and the Rev. W.L. Shipman officiating.

Burial will be held in Benton Station cemetery.

Douglas Turner
MONTEAGLE - Douglas Turner died Sunday, May 23, 1999, in Dunlap, Tenn. He was 77.

Mr. Turner was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and of the United Pentecostal Church.

There are no immediate survivors.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Cumberland Funeral Home with the Rev. Lillian Hedges and the Rev. Wayne Shrum officiating.

Burial will be in City cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Faye Wilson
DECATUR - Faye Wilson died Friday, May 21, 1999, in an area hospital. She was 54.

Services will be today at 2 p.m. at Cottonport Baptist Church with the Rev. Max Redmond officiating.

Burial will be in Cottonport cemetery.

Arrangements are by Ziegler Funeral Home.

Franklin Wilson
RICEVILLE - Franklin Wilson died Saturday, May 22, 1999, in a Knoxville hospital. He was 58.

He was the son of the late Rosa Lee Wilson and was raised by his grandparents, the late Robert and Margaret Wilson.

Mr. Wilson was a member of Eastanallee Baptist Church and was a deacon and Sunday school director for 10 years. He owned and operated the Calhoun (Tenn.) Gulf station for 31 years and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Kinser Wilson, Riceville; son, Tracy Wilson, Riceville; and two granddaughters.

Services will be today at 1 p.m. at Eastanallee Baptist Church with the Rev. Oran Creasman officiating.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church.

Arrangements are by Jerry Smith Funeral Home.

Vera Bole
MONTEAGLE - Vera Isabell Bole died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, in Sewanee, Tenn. She was 85.

A graveside service will be today at 1 p.m. in Stockport cemetery.

Arrangements are by Cumberland Funeral Home, Monteagle, Tenn.

Louis Brannen
ATHENS - The Rev. Louis Alton Brannen died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, in a Knoxville hospital. He was 82.

During his 60 years of ministry, he served the Church of God as a pastor in Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia, Texas and Florida. During that time he served in the ministry in Kenya, East Africa, Honduras and Mexico. He served as National Convention Speaker in Guyana and held other offices as Louisiana Church of God state council member, Louisiana Church of God state trustee and as the Church of God district overseer in Louisiana and Tennessee.

He moved to Athens in 1991, accepting a position as chaplain for Plastic Industries, where he served until his death. He was an active member of the Woodward Avenue Church of God, serving on the pastor's council.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Bell Brannen; three sons, Fred Brannen, Cleveland, Wilmon Brannen, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Lowell Brannen, Lake Charles, La.; two daughters, Bonita Landrum, Niota, Tenn., and Donice Oakley, Athens; a sister, Katie Morgan Barnes, Lacoochee, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be today at 10 a.m. at Woodward Avenue Church of God with the Rev. Wayne Fritts, the Rev. Corky Alexander and Dr. Gene D. Rice officiating.

Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery in Lenoir City.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of God World Missions-Africa Harvest Fund, P.O. Box 8016, Cleveland TN 37320.

Arrangements are by Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home, Athens.

William Bryant
LYLES - William Robert 'Bud' Bryant died Wednesday, May 19, 1999. He was 70.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at McDonald Funeral Home in Centerville, Tenn., with Jerry Milarn officiating.

Burial will be in Hilltop cemetery in Lyles.

Lois Davis
DAYTON - Lois Omega Davis died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in a Chattanooga hospital. She was 66.

Mrs. Davis attended Graysville Seventh-day Adventist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Davis; a daughter, Kathy Ervin; and a sister, Ruth Long.

Survivors include a sister, Hazel Davis, Graysville, Tenn.; two brothers, Fred Garren, Epaforth, Ga., and Warden Garren, Copperhill, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with the Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating.

Burial will be in Pleasant View cemetery.

Visitation will be all day today at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Johnson
BIRCHWOOD - Elizabeth Johnson died Friday, May 21, 1999, at her home. She was 89.

She was the widow of Roy A. Johnson and a charter member of New Liberty Baptist Church of Birchwood.

Survivors include a son, Ronald Johnson, Birchwood; sister, Willie Mae Cross, Ocoee, Tenn.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Fike Funeral Home with the Rev. Brian Welch and the Rev. Ernest Sutton officiating.

Burial will be in McInturff cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Leah Heard
OCOEE - Leah Swania Heard died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 68.

Mrs. Heard was a member of Ocoee Church of God.

Survivors include her husband, R.V. Heard; two daughters, Cheryl Ann Bothe, Tampa, Fla., and Sandra Lynn Barringer, Ocoee; a son, Robin V. Herd, Cleveland; two sisters, Marilyn Ruth Dyer, Lewisburg, Ohio, and Peggy Ann Collins, Tampa, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Ocoee Church of God with the Rev. Bob Whitmire and the Rev. James Byrd officiating.

Burial will be in Cookson Creek cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church.

Jo Anne Parker
DONELSON - Jo Anne Parker died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in Nashville. She was 67.

The Chattanooga native was employed by the Department of Education.

Survivors include her husband, Harry Parker; son, David Price; two daughters, Ellen Bond and Leigh Ann Gregory, both of Donelson; her mother, Florence Eleanor Hughes, and a sister, Linda Rogers, both of Chattanooga; six grandchildren.

A graveside service will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Heritage Memorial Gardens in Hermitage, Tenn.

Arrangements are being handled by Hibbett & Hailey Funeral Home, Nashville.

Harold Ridge
GEORGETOWN - Harold Lloyd Ridge died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 60.

Mr. Ridge was a minister of the Church of God for 30 years and a member of Hopewell Church of God. He was the son of the late Hiram Ridge.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Wilson Ridge; three sons, Steve, Michael and David Ridge, all of Georgetown; two daughters, Cheryl Bryant and Christy Ridge, both of Georgetown; his mother, Lena Grayson Ridge, Tiftonia; two brothers, Paul Ridge, Tiftonia, and Claude Ridge, Red Bank; three sisters, Lucille Ellison, Trenton, Ga., Lela Holland, Tiftonia, and Leota Cameron, Ooltewah; and six grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Melvin Payne officiating.

Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, West.

Visitation will be Sunday after 3 p.m. at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.

John Moffitt
SPENCER - John J. Moffitt died Friday, May 21, 1999. He was 79.

Mr. Moffitt was retired and attended the Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Dessie Moffitt; a son, Johnny M. Moffitt, Spencer; two brothers, Charles Moffitt, Spencer, and Raleigh Moffitt, Madison Heights, Mich.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Love-Cantrell & Cope Spencer Chapel with Larry Rhoten officiating.

Burial will be in Shockley cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 3 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. until the time of service.
