Gussie S. Samples
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Gussie Stewart Samples, who worked for more than 30 years with Jones Flower Shop, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at a local hospital. She was 83.
Mrs. Samples was a member of Union Grove Church of Christ and was the daughter of the late Will and Susie Stewart.
She also was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Samples; two sisters, Cora Stewart and Linnie York; and two brothers, Lake and Boe Stewart.
Survivors include two daughters, Bobbie Templeton, Cleveland, and Jeannie Triplett, Decatur, Ala.; a sister, Willie Beck, Cleveland; a brother, J.D. Stewart, Cleveland; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home, Cleveland, with ministers Kevin Green and Ted Gobble officiating.
Burial will be in Union Grove Church of Christ cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Sammie Jane Truitt Dies at 76;
SOUTH PITTSBURG, Tenn. - Sammie Jane Martin Truitt, who was retired after 25 years with U.S. Stove Co. and had written a weekly column for The Jasper Journal, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 76.
Mrs. Truitt was the daughter of a well-known Marion County family, the late William Herbert and Tennessee Jane Raulston Martin.
She had worked as a legal secretary in Dallas and Chattanooga and was a member of Holly Avenue United Methodist Church, the Marion County Genealogical Society and the South Pittsburg Lioness Club.
For several years she wrote her column for the Jasper Journal. She was the author of 'The Smith Family of Battle Creek,' co-author of 'The Martin Cousins by the Martin Cousins,' and had assisted J. Leonard Raulston in publication of 'The Raulstons and the Part They Played in American History' and 'Sequatchie.'
She was preceded in death by an infant son, John Milbreth Truitt.
Survivors include a daughter, Jacquelyn Truitt Ables, Chattanooga; sister, Ann Louise Cunningham, Nashville; four grandchildren, William M. Ables IV, Paul Martin Ables, Alicia Camille Ables and John Gentry Ables, all of Chattanooga.
A memorial service will be today at 3 p.m. CST at Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg with the Rev. Larry Murphy officiating.
Sam Miles
Sam E. Miles, a retired executive vice president at Provident Life and Accident Insurance Co., died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 93.
Mr. Miles, a longtime resident of Lookout Mountain, was a native of North Carolina and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He moved to Chattanooga in 1935 to take a position with Provident. He rose to be head of the Life Department and, at the time of his retirement, was executive vice president and had served on the board of directors for 17 years.
He also served on the board of directors of Hamilton National Bank.
Mr. Miles was active in the United Way, serving as campaign chairman in 1967 and as president in 1973 and 1974. He was chairman of the committee responsible for finding the property where the present home of the United Way was built.
He was asked to work with the architect and the board of Pro Re Bona day care in the financing and construction of a larger building.
He was on the board of directors for the Humane Educational Society for 21 years, serving as president for the last seven. He was on the first board of directors for both the Community Foundation and the Better Business Bureau. He was elected to the board of the Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association, a worldwide organization, serving as a member from 1947-51 and as president in 1950.
Mr. Miles, an active member of First Baptist Church in the Golden Gateway for more than 63 years, was elected a life deacon there. He taught the Chapman Sunday School Class for more than 35 years. In the 1960s he served for six years on the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention.
He also was a member of the Public School Bible Study Committee for more than 25 years, the Mountain City Club and the Lookout Mountain Golf Club.
He was preceded in death by his son, William L. Miles.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Mary Liddell Miles; two children, Sam E. Miles Jr., Lookout Mountain, and Mary Ann Heard, Macon, Ga.; a brother, Erle W. Miles, Tarpon Springs, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Gary Carver officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Hills cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church Friday from 1 p.m. until the service.

Ruth F. Burnette
Ruth Forbes Burnette, who taught for 31 years in the Chattanooga Public Schools, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at her home.
Mrs. Burnette served as teacher for T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital for nine years. She was the widow of Harry G. Burnette, a lifetime member of Northside Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Archer Bible Class and an active member of the Northside Women's Association.
She was a daughter of the late George and Dora C. Forbes and a member of the Chattanooga Retired Teachers Association, the Alpha Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and the 1929 class of Central High School.
She was a graduate of the University of Chattanooga.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Burnette Huffine, Cumming, Ga.; son, Harry Forbes Burnette, Chattanooga; two sisters, Olga Frank E. Elder, Athens, Tenn., and Mary Jane F. Blanchard, Chattanooga; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Friday at 2 p.m. in Chattanooga Memorial Park, with a memorial service to follow at Northside Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Eade Anderson and Dr. Larry Schenk officiating.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Book of Remembrance at Northside Presbyterian Church.
Daniel Robinson
Daniel Ruffner Robinson, an assistant to the pastors of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, died Wednesday, May 26, 1999, at his home. He was 60.
Mr. Robinson was a graduate of Baylor School and Auburn University. He had retired from American Manufacturing Co. and Lay Renewal Ministries.
He served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force, was a member of the Signal Mountain Police Department Reserve Unit and served on the board of Northside Neighborhood House, Bachman Memorial Home and the Orange Grove Center.
Survivors include his wife, Allison Stem Robinson; a son, Dr. Andrew Robinson, Denver; daughter, Mary Stansburg, Baltimore; and a brother, James B. Robinson, Chattanooga.
Burial will be today at 2 p.m. in Chattanooga National cemetery.
A service of the resurrection will be celebrated at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. with Dr. William E. Dudley, Dr. David Swanson and James Martin officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately after the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, Orange Grove Center or a favorite charity.

Robert Scholze Williams
Robert Scholze Williams, former president of Southern Saddlery Co. and the oldest local graduate of Baylor School, died Tuesday, April 6, 1999. He was 96.
Mr. Williams was a resident of Lookout Mountain. He was the son of the late Judge Joe V. and Annie Scholze Williams, the husband of the late Mary Lawton Williams and the brother of the late Joseph Vincent Williams Jr.
He attended Chattanooga public schools and graduated from Baylor in 1920. He attended Georgia Tech, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and graduated from Pratt Institute in 1924 with a degree in chemical engineering.
He was affiliated with Cole Engineering Co. and Scholze Tannery.
During World War II he operated King Provision Co. while serving as vice president of Southern Saddlery. He later became Southern Saddlery's president.
Mr. Williams was a former president of the Saddlemakers Association of America, former director of the Chattanooga Civitan Club, former president of the Sons of the American Revolution and a former member of the City Farmers Club.
He was on the board of directors and was a life member of the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities and a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Episcopal.
Survivors include his daughter, Elaine Williams Avera, Lookout Mountain; a son, Robert Lawton Williams, Huntsville, Ala.; two sisters, Gertrude Gaston, Charleston, S.C., and Margaret Robbins, Chattanooga; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at noon at the Church of God Shepherd, Episcopal, with the Rev. John T. Talbird officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the parish hall at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Robert C. Tulis Dies at 70;
Robert Clement Tulis, a Tennessee Valley Authority retiree and past president of the Chattanooga Engineers Club, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, from injuries suffered when he was hit by a falling tree branch. He was 70.
Mr. Tulis was born in Boston and graduated from Northeastern University with an engineering degree. While working for Combustion Engineering, he acquired a master's degree in education.
He worked for TVA for 29 years, much of that in pollution control. He was former president of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, past president of the North Brainerd Community Association, and sang in the choir at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, of which he was a member.
Survivors include his wife, Marianne Tulis; daughter, Barbara Washington, Los Angeles; two sons, David Tulis, Chattanooga, and Thomas Tulis, Atlanta; a sister, Elaine Tulis, Boston; brother, Ed Tulis, Fellsmer, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with the Rev. Mike Nolan officiating.
Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 3 to 4 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.
