RAYMOND K. MULHERN, PhD, 55, of Memphis, passed away on July 2, 2005 after a brief but heroic battle with cancer. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa and attended University of Wisconsin for undergraduate, University of Pacific for his masters and received his PhD in psychology from University of Wisconsin. The majority of his professional career was spent at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital where he was chief of the Division of Behavioral Medicine. At St. Jude, Dr. Mulhern became internationally renowned for his significant contributions to the field of pediatric psychology. His research program in the cognitive neuroscience, particularly his work on cognitive rehabilitation methods for the treatment for cancer-related learning disabilities, was at the leading edge of investigation worldwide. Dr. Mulhern was well respected for his work on neurobehavioral syndromes that are a result of cancer and cancer therapies. He also developed one of the most highly regarded psychosocial service programs for pediatric cancer patients in the world. But what was most important to this man was his family. He was a loving and devoted husband and father who truly valued the importance of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his loving mother, Alice Mary Mulhern, and brother Brian Mulhern. He leaves his wife, soul mate, of nearly 33 years, Donna Marie, and 2 children, Marissa Anne and Patrick Joseph. He also leaves his father R.K. Mulhern, Sr., and brother, James Mulhern of Antioch, CA, along with several nieces and nephews and numerous friends and colleagues. He was known by Dr. Mulhern, Ray, Ken and Dad....In every case he was truly a leader and a mentor who will truly be missed by his friends, family and colleagues.
