Florence Williams

Florence B. Williams, 89, of Spearfish, died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2006, at the Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.
Florence Williams was born Nov. 6, 1916, in Hand County near Miller, to Al and Carrie (McLoud) Johnson. On April 18, 1942, she married Alfred Syring, in Omaha, Neb. They lived on a farm near Vayland, for the next 12 years during which time two daughters were born.
After Mr. Syring's death in March 1954, Florence and her daughters relocated to St. Lawrence. On Dec. 22, 1956, she married John Williams, of Highmore, where they moved in May 1957, and then moved to Spearfish in May, 1967.
Florence was a long-time member of the American Legion and DAV Auxiliaries.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, three sisters, and one grandson. She is survived by her husband, John; her daughters, Judy Yost, of McCook, Neb., and Sally LaBau, of Parker, Colo.; five grandchildren, Jade Yost, Jared LaBau, Michelle (LaBau) Naber, Kecia (Yost) Thorsmodsgaard, and Lirin Yost; six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She leaves behind special friends Mary Brady, and Janet, Steven, Jennifer and Scott Betten.
Cremation has taken place and inurnment will be in the Highmore cemetery in Highmore.
Aldinger Funeral Home & Cremation Service has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Dale Sander

A memorial service will be held for Dale Harvey Sander, 59, of Spearfish, at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish with the Rev. Kip Roozen officiating. A private burial will be held prior to the services. Dale died Nov. 27, 2005, as the result of a car accident near Zell.
Dale was born March 16, 1946, in Denver, Colo., the first child of the Rev. Harvey H. Sander and Carol R. (Bemmels) Sander. During his early years, he lived in Tulare, and Groton, where his father served the Methodist churches. In 1959, the family moved to Rapid City, and Dale graduated from Rapid City High School in 1964. He graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1968, with a business degree. He then received a fellowship to the University of South Dakota and completed his MBA. Following graduation, Dale worked for the accounting firm of Sayler, Thorstenson, and Co., in Rapid City. In 1970, he joined the faculty at Black Hills State College. In l980, he again joined the accounting firm of Ketel, Thorstenson, LLP, and became a partner in 1986. In 1997, Dale received the Distinguished Service Award from the South Dakota CPA Society for his public service work. In 2000, he went to work for RamVac in Spearfish and continued to work there until his death.
He was united in marriage to Carol J. (Mack) Sander on June 22, 1968, in Clark. They had two daughters. In May 2000, he became "Papa Dale." Being a grandfather to his three little angels was the ultimate joy in his life.
Dale loved God, his church, his family and friends. His impeccable value system was practiced daily. With his strong faith in God, he always looked and found the good in people and situations. Dale was a natural teacher who channeled this talent into many of his passions. As an active member of the United Methodist Church, he taught Sunday school for more than 25 years to children and adults. For more than 20 years, he taught a hunter's safety course in Spearfish and more than 2, 000 young hunters were guided by his knowledge. Dale was an active member of the Spearfish Kiwanis Club, and in 2000, received the distinguished Hixson Award.
As an avid hunter and fisherman, Dale loved the outdoors, especially the Black Hills. After many years of hunting and shooting, Dale was overjoyed to shoot two trophy deer in one week in November 2005.
Dale is greatly missed by his family, friends and community. He is survived by his wife, Carol, of Spearfish; daughters, Cathy Matthesen and her husband John, of Rapid City and Lori Scheer of Allen, Texas; grandchildren, Jacob and Michael, of Rapid City and Caroline of Allen, Texas; sister Laura Goodwin, of Rifle, Colo.; sister Ruth and her husband, the Rev. Eric Grinager, of Watertown; and several uncles, aunts and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Wanda.
Memorial contributions will go to the building fund of the Spearfish United Methodist Church.
The Aldinger Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Spearfish has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Lucille Grace Wilson Kaiser

Lucille Grace Wilson Kaiser died on June 11, 2006 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Lucille was born on October 9, 1913, at Dallas, S.D., to Joseph & Ida Mae Wilson. The Wilson family came to the western part of South Dakota in 1927 and settled in Butte County. Lucille attended high school in Vale, South Dakota, She married David A. Kaiser at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newell, South Dakota on November 27, 1930. The family farmed in the Nisland, Orman-Arpan area for 37 years. Lucille and Dave were active as 4-H Leaders, in the Orman-Arpan Community organizations. Lucille was active in Extension Club, Alter Society of St. Paul's Catholic Church, the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. Once her family was grown, Lucille worked off the farm at the sugar beet factory and at department stores and jewelry stores in Belle Fourche. In 1967, Lucille & Dave sold the family farm and moved to Nisland. Lucille was a cook for the Nisland School and after Dave's death in 1968 she was employed by the Belle Fourche School District in their hot lunch program until her retirement. After Dave's death she moved to Belle Fourche into her home built by her son-in-law Dale, with the help of other family members, on a lot right next to her son and daughter-in-law, Vince and Dorothy. No one dared tell Mom that they had any other plans for the 4th of July but to be in Belle Fourche for the traditional 4th of July gathering. Lucille was a beautiful seamstress and family members, neighbors and friends were the recipients of many beautiful clothes sewn and altered by her busy hands.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Theresa (Dale) Burke, Sun City, Arizona, Vince (Dorothy) Kaiser, Belle Fourche, Loretta (Bob) Upton, Montgomery, Texas, James, Belle Fourche, SD, Paul (Pam), Pasadena, California, Marietta (Ray) Schnitger, Bloomington, Illinois, Nancy (Ed) Pedneau, Spearfish, SD and Carol (Larry) Vavruska, Spearfish, SD, son-in-law, Sid Johnson of Brookings and daughter-in-law, Mary Carol Kaiser, of St. Onge, SD. She is also survived by 31 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren, Her husband, David Kaiser, one daughter, Frances, one son, Robert, two infant grandchildren, her 17 year old granddaughter, Lori Schnitger, her parents and 11 brothers and sisters preceded her in death.
Visitation will be noon until 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Belle Fourche, SD, with Fr. Tim Hoag officiating. A Vigil will be offered at 6:30 p.m. at the Church on Tuesday evening. Burial will be at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche, SD. Arrangements are with Kinkade Funeral Chapel of Sturgis.
A Memorial has been established to Hospice of the Northern Hills.

Ruth M. Johnson

Ruth M. Johnson, 93, formerly of Spearfish, died Tuesday, January 3, 2006, at Pioneer Manor in Gillette, Wyo.
Ruth was born March 7, 1912, on the family farm on Mason Creek, northeast of Upton, Wyo. to Fred and Anne Marie (Fredrickson) Johnson. She attended the rural Mason Creek School through the ninth grade, graduated from Upton High School in 1929, and from the University of Wyoming in 1944. She taught in rural schools, Weston and Crook counties, and later in Osage and Gillette, Wyoming. In 1944 she moved to Sheridan, WY, where she taught in elementary grades for 30 years.
Her hobbies included gardening, photography and writing. The family bought a home in Sheridan in 1951. She and her sister Mildred Katherine sold the home in 1986 and moved to a retirement home complex in Spearfish.
In Sheridan, she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church; after moving to Spearfish, she joined Our SaviorĒs Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her sister, M. Katherine Johnson of Spearfish.
In keeping with her wishes, Ruth has been cremated and inurnment will take place in the Greenwood cemetery in Upton, Wyo. at 1:30 p.m., June 20, 2006. The Aldinger Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Spearfish has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Evelyn Melton (Jennings) Gordon

Evelyn Melton (Jennings) Gordon of Spearfish, SD, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Spearfish Regional Hospital at the age of 91.
Visitation will be from 3 until 6 p.m. on Friday, June 16, 2006, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, 2006, at the Northern Hills Baptist Church in Spearfish, with Pastor Hexon Maldonado officiating, burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery in Spearfish.
A memorial has been established to benefit Northern Hills Baptist Church of Spearfish.
Evelyn was born at Piedmont, S.D., to Levi and Harriet (Melton) Jennings on May 5, 1915. She went to school in Whitewood, S.D., until she was 12 years old. The family moved to Lambert, MT, where Evelyn graduated from high school in 1933.
Ralph James Gordon and Evelyn were married on July 11, 1934 in Lambert. During their first year of marriage they resided at Nemo, S.D., and Whitewood, and later operated a restaurant in Sidney, MT. They moved to Spearfish in 1942 and remained there.
Eugene R. (Gene) and James Lee (Jim) were the sons born to this union.
Evelyn is survived by her son Gene and his wife Elaine Gordon of Brandon, S.D., four granddaughters, one grandson, three great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by good friends, Ernie Hardy, Peggy Meinke, her dear friends on Jupiter Court and her loving and devoted church family at the Northern Hills Baptist Church.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

Don Albert James

Don Albert James (79) passed away Sunday, June 11 at the Custer Regional Senior Care Center with his loving family at his bedside. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, June 16 at the Lead/Deadwood Funeral Chapel in Lead.
Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, June 17 at 11:00 AM at the Lead/Deadwood Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Peary Wilson officiating. The Lead Masonic Lodge #9 A.F. & A.M will give Masonic rites. A luncheon will follow at the Lead Trinity United Methodist Church. Don's ashes will be interned at the Mountain Lawn cemetery outside of Lead on Monday, June 19 at 1:00 PM with close family and friends. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated through Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish.
Don was born February 17, 1927 in Brush, Colorado to Vern and Elsie (Allen) James. He grew up on the family farm with one brother (Vernon) and three sisters (Betty, Patti and Virginia) during the dust bowl years of the Depression. After struggling for many years the family moved to northern Minnesota to start a new life. Don attended elementary school in Baudette and agricultural high school in Crookston, Minn. Before graduating from high school, Don enlisted in the Navy during the last years of WWII. Don was stationed in Bremerton, Wash. and repaired Navy combat aircraft. Don was discharged from the Navy on July 18, 1946 and then returned home. After doing odd jobs for several years in the Baudette area, Don attended technical college in Kansas City, Mo. and received a diploma in electrical and refrigeration systems in 1952. Don followed his sister Betty to the Black Hills and started employment with Homestake in 1952. He worked in the electrical department and Kirk Power Plant for 16 years before starting his own electrical contracting business in 1968. Don's Electric was responsible for wiring many residences, cabins and businesses in the Lawrence County area over three decades. Don helped build the first chair-lift at Terry Peak in the early 1950's and continued doing their electrical work after starting out on his own. Don obtained his GED in 1972. Don enjoyed working with his two sons, Rod and Stan, wife Betty and loyal friend Monty Westphal. Don sold his business and retired in 1996.
Don met the love of his life, Betty Jean Dryer, shortly after moving to the area. They were married on September 13, 1953 at the Lead Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister. Grateful for having had shared his life, love and encouragement are his wife of 52 years, Betty; his sons Rod James (Waltraud Brogren), Apple Valley, MN and Stan (Debbie) James, Spearfish; his two daughters Donna (Steve) Whiton, Deadwood and Nancy Benfit (Allan Pfarr), Spearfish; one brother Vernon (Julie) James, Baudette, MN; three sisters Betty (Pat) Ellis, Pueblo, CO, Patti (Clarence) Carlson, Hibbing, MN and Virginia (Chet) Pasco, Tucson, AZ; six grandchildren, Bridget Whiton, Lead, Scott James, Chandler, AZ, Amber Whiton, Deadwood, Eric James, Spearfish, Adam Whiton, Deadwood and Nick James, Spearfish; one great-grandchild Kemper Whiton, Deadwood; one godson Jacob Pinske, Alaska; and many nieces and nephews.
Don was active in the Masonic Temple and served as Worshipful Master. Don's other interest and hobbies included taking many motorcycle and car trips with his wife and close friends Joe and Marci Mack, martial arts (black-shirt Gung Fu, green-belt Ju Jitsu), running, hunting, archery, camping, model trains, working on his bobcat and playing cards with close friends Steve and Rayetta Ziebell. Don was a true health nut and would do hand-stands and push-ups at the drop of a hat way into his 60's. Don is a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, South Dakota Electrical Council, Naja Shriners, Eastern Star, Dakota Commandery #1, and Royal Arch Masons.
A memorial fund has been established and his family will designate a worthy charity. Please send cards and condolences to 27 Baltimore, Lead, SD 57754.

Conrad A. Williams

Conrad A. Williams, 89, longtime Belle Fourche resident died Saturday, June 10, 2006 at the David M. Dorsett Regional Senior Care Center in Spearfish.
Conrad was born March 13, 1917, in Spearfish to Albert and Nellie Williams. In the 1930's he worked in the family bakery business in Bottineau, N.D. and attended college at the North Dakota School of Forestry, where he met Margaret Louise Barr. They were married June 12, 1937 in Marshall, N.D. In 1943 they moved with their daughter, Marcia to Belle Fourche and in 1945 the home on Kingsbury Street became their permanent residence. Conrad and Louise worked together as a business team for a major portion of their married life, establishing and operating Williams Transportation in Carter County, Mont. After retirement from the transportation business, Conrad and Louise enjoyed spending the winters in Arizona. During the past few years they have lived at the Tender Care in Spearfish.
Conrad was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother and his beloved wife of 68 years.
He is survived by his daughter, Marcia Williams Josephson, Greenwich, Conn; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He will be remembered by his loved ones and close associates as a hard-working, honest and generous person of utmost integrity and sharp wit.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 14th at Kline Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche and for one hour before services at the church.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 15 at the United Methodist Church in Belle Fourche with Reverend Gail Arnold officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.

Dale R. Erickson

Dale R. Erickson, 60, died June 1, 2006, at the VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Services were held at Church At The Gate in Sioux Falls on Monday June 5. Survivors included his children, Dustin (Kathi) Erickson, Lead, S.D. and Desari (Jim) Derby, Laurel, Mont.; two grandchildren, Megan and Kevan; his mother, Orva Erickson, Redfield, S.D.; two stepdaughters; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends. Dale was preceded in death by his father, Carl; and a son, Derek Blair. Memorials may be directed to Dale Erickson Family, 306 Grand Ave., Lead SD 57754.

Joyce Miles

Joyce A. Miles, 73, of Lead, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital in Deadwood.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis with Deacon Vern Rath officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to benefit Hospice of the Northern Hills, 1440 N. Main St., Spearfish, SD 57783
Joyce was born Nov. 6, 1932, in Omaha, Neb., to Clyde and Helen (Best) Smith. She moved with her family to the Whitewood and Sturgis area where she attended school.
She married Fred Miles on March 15, 1954, in Sturgis. To this union four children were born. The couple lived in Sturgis and Deadwood before moving to Lead in 1965, where Fred worked for Homestake Mining Company. Joyce enjoyed spending time with her family, fishing and raising cats and dogs.
Grateful to have shared her life is her husband of 52 years, Fred Miles, of Lead; son, Ted (Carla) Miles, of Omaha, Ariz.; two daughters, Cheri (Terry) Dunn, Zion, Ill., and Joy (Erich) Miles-Hostetler, of Lakewood, Colo.; three sisters, Dee Hesselberg, of Bangor, Wis., Nellie Smith, of Rapid City, and Gloria Schweitzer, of Nebraska; five granddaughters; and several great-grandchildren.
Joyce was preceded in death by an infant son, her parents, four brothers and one sister.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

Rex John Perrigo, Jr.

Rex John Perrigo, Jr., 66, of Alliance, Neb., formerly of Rapid City, went home to be with his Lord on Monday Jan. 23, 2006, at his home in Alliance, Neb.
He was born Dec. 31, 1939, in Rapid City, the oldest son of Rex John, Sr., and Lucille (Randolph) Perrigo. He was raised and educated in Piedmont, graduating from Piedmont High School in 1958.
Rex married Geri (Ruckman) Blackwell, the love of his life, on Feb. 14, 1990. He had a wonderful personality and never seemed to meet a stranger.
He was a member of the Western Dakota Antique Club, where he would display his tractors with love and great pride.
He was baptized at the United Pentecostal Church of Hot Springs, and was an active member of the Apostolics of Alliance, with the title of Ministry of Maintenance. He was loved greatly and will be missed very much by many friends and family.
Rex is survived by his wife, Geri Perrigo, of Alliance, Neb.; two daughters, Rebecca and husband Vern Pope, Jr., of Rapid City and Lorena Lucille, of Chicago, Ill.; one grandson, Levi Ellis; his mother Lucille Park, of Rapid City; two brothers, Alvin Perrigo, of New Underwood and Earl Perrigo, of Olympia, Wash.; three step-daughters, Rose Smith, Robin LaVallie, Marsha Morgan; two step-sons, Larry Blackwell and Bob Blackwell; 14 step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Rex John Perrigo, Sr., one brother, LeRoy Perrigo, and step-father, Otis Park.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home with Duane Wallace and Les Goetsch officiating. Interment followed at Pine Lawn Memorial Park. Memorial Services will be held at the Apostolic's of Alliance, l530 E. l0th St, in Alliance, Neb., at 11 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 29 with lunch to follow at the Alliance Park Shelter.
Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home and Bates-Gould Funeral Home, of Alliance, Neb., is in care of arrangements.
