Dr. Charles H. Linander

Dr. Charles H. Linander, 86, Spearfish, died Monday, April 18 at Fort Meade VA Medical Nursing Home, Sturgis.
Charles Harry Linander was born Oct. 19, 1918 in Spearfish, to Carl Harry and Dorothy Belle (Nelson) Linander. He graduated from Spearfish High School and attended BHSU. Charles attended Nazarene College, in Ohio, one year and the University of Wyoming one year. He returned to BHSU, graduating in 1940 and was superintendent of schools in Morton, Wyo., for one year. On June 4, 1942, he married Marjorie Giachino in Spearfish. They lived a year in Dayton, Ohio, where Charles was employed in a machine factory for the war efforts.
He served in the Marine Corps from 1944-1946, and was stationed in Japan. Following his discharge, the family lived in Omaha, Neb., and Charles attended Creighton University Dental School, earning a doctor of dental surgery degree. The family returned to Spearfish, where he opened a dentist's office in 1953, which he operated for 33 years.
Dr. Linander was very involved in community and area activities and service. He was a member of Spearfish Masonic Lodge AF&AM;, a member of the Scottish Rite, and a Past Potentate (1979) of Naja Shrine, Deadwood; he was named outstanding Shriner in 1998. He was a member of the Northern Hills Shrine Club and co-founder and past commander of the Flying Aces unit.
At BHSU, Dr. Linander was co-founder of the Athletic Booster Club, and the Green and Gold Club, formerly the Purple and Gold Club. He was named the Green and Gold Club, Man of the Year twice for his contributions and leadership. He was inducted into the Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame in 1986. He served as chairman and organized the BHSU annual Shrine football game. Dr. Linander led the BHSU Alumni Association as president for three separate terms, and was named Outstanding Alumnus in 1973. Dr. and Mrs. Linander were honored as parade marshals for the 2003 Swarm Day parade. Chuck was also voted to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as an avid supporter.
He was a member of the VFW Post #5860 and American Legion Post #164. In 2000, he organized and led a "Back to America" parade through downtown Spearfish, to promote patriotism in the area. Dr. Linander led a successful effort to raise $10, 000 to purchase new flags and replace worn ones on Spearfish streets.
Dr. Linander was a former Spearfish Board of Education member. He was also an honorary member of the Spearfish Volunteer Fire Department and the United Church of Christ.
Charles is survived by his wife, Marjorie Dean (Giachino) Linander, Spearfish, one daughter Sharon (Gary) Andersen, Spearfish, one son, Terry Linander, Midland, Ga., five grandchildren, Greg (Kelli) Linander, Jason (Brandi) Linander both of Columbus, Ga., Julie Linander, Atlanta, Ga., Ryan Andersen, and Kara (Todd) Harmon both of Spearfish and three great-grandchildren.
Charles was preceeded in death by his parents and one sister Marjorie.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 21, from 2-8 p.m. at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel, Spearfish.
Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2005, at the United Church of Christ, Spearfish, with the Rev. Dr. Jeri Behringer and the Rev. Harry Giffin officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery, Spearfish. The Spearfish Honor Guard will provide full military honors.
Memorials may be directed to the Black Hills State University Athletic Scholarship Fund and to the Hospice of the Northern Hills Future Spearfish Building Fund.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

Lois Reichert

SPEARFISH -- Lois Reichert, 88, Spearfish, died at a local elderly care home Thursday, June 3, 2004.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2004, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Howard Smith officiating.
Burial will follow at the Bear Butte cemetery.
She was Oct. 15, 1915, to George and Drusilla (Boshart) Reichert on the family's Hay Draw Creek homestead at Clough, SD.
She graduated from New Underwood High School and from Spearfish Normal, now Black Hills State University.
She taught rural schools near Sulphur and in Midland.
In 1942, she accepted a position at FBI headquarters in Washington, DC, where she worked as a writer until her retirement in 1978.
In 1995, Lois moved to Sturgis to be nearer to her family.
She was a member of the Sturgis Arts Council, the BHSU Alumni and the Republican Party.
Survivors include one brother and his wife, Hugh and Connie Reichert of Hereford; one sister, Edna Basler of Rapid City; two sister in laws, Mildred Reichert of New Underwood and Ethel Reichert of Spearfish; and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Her parents, two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
A memorial has been established to the Children's Care Hospital and School in Sioux Falls.

Norman Eugene Lee

Norman Eugene Lee passed away in his home in Dayton, NV on April 23, 2005.
He was born January 10, 1933 in Lead, SD to Mary and George Lee.
He attended elementary school in South Lead School until his family moved to Deadwood.
He attended Deadwood Jr. High and Deadwood High School, graduating in 1953.
Norman was chosen "Most Outstanding Athlete" at Deadwood High in 1952.
He served two years in the Marine Corps.
Norm worked in the casino industry in Nevada and was Security Director at Harvey's Resort Hotel at Lake Tahoe and also as a guard for the State of Nevada Department of prisons for 20 years, retiring in 1993.
Norman was a three sport athlete at Deadwood High School earning eleven varsity letters.
He was a member of the Marine Corps Drill Team at the Lake Mead Base, Las Vegas, Nevada.
Survivors include two sons, Mark of Reno, NV and Dana of Carson City, NV, three grandchildren and his long time friend, Carolyn Burke Snow of Seattle, Washington.

Evelyn F. Elliott

Evelyn F. Elliott, 88, Spearfish, died Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at Garden Hills Assisted Living in Spearfish.
Survivors include two sisters, Doris Sherburne, Spearfish and Jean Rahja, Aberdeen.
Arrangements are pending with Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

Joshua David Switzer

Joshua David Switzer, infant, Spearfish passed away Monday, May 2, 2005 at Saint Vincent Hospital in Billings, Mont.
Joshua is survived by his parents, Walter and Darcey Switzer, Spearfish, brother, Caleb Switzer, Spearfish, maternal grandparents, Jim and Cindy Roberts, Spearfish, paternal grandparents, Ken and Carolyn Switzer, Meridian, Miss., maternal great-grandparents, Jim and Alta Roberts, Rapid City, paternal great-grandparents, Dorothy Switzer, Meridian, Miss. and George and Tommie Adams, Natchez, Miss., and maternal great-great grandmother, Gladys Wilson, Rapid City.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2005 at Solid Rock Church in Spearfish with Pastor Jim Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.

Lynn (Hap) Albert Brewer

During his lifetime our dad was a rancher in South Dakota, a logger in Idaho, a radio operator on a submarine hunter in the navy and a design engineer for Lockheed, Rockwell and Boeing. In the 60s and 70s, his love for the outdoors motivated him to start his own firewood and landcaping business, though he eventually returned to the aerospace industry in 1975 and retired from Boeing in 1995.
Dad loved life with a passion and enjoyed fishing and hunting, reading and doing crossword puzzles. He was happiest sitting next to a lake on sunny warm days, his wife, children and grandchildren near, a pole in the water next to him, a book on his lap, and a cup of coffee in his hand.
He dearly loved his family and has left behind a large and loving legacy that greatly misses his enormous presence in our lives. He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia; children, Peter and Cherri Thompson, Frank and Joni Jackon, Mark and Della Brewer, Greg and Michael Brewer; grandchildren, Peter and Tracy Thompson, Tyler and Jennifer Thompson, Kirstin, Kaley, Aimee and Annaliese Thompson, Emily, Sara and Will Jackson, Dustin and Nikki Brewer, Jill and Gerry Graham, Matt, Alyssa, Jerrod and Jaden, Kristal, Michael, Cortni and Kayla Brewer and great granddaughters, Brenda, Alayna and "Twinkie Star" Thompson. He is also survived by his sister, Delores Hoffman of South Dakota and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Adam Brewer, his brother, Virgil Brewer, and sister, Bonnie Derosier.
A memorial service celebrating and honoring our father will be held on April 8, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Desert Christian Church, 1011 E. Ave. I, Lancaster, Calif.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Lancaster Community Hospital Intensive Care Unit in memory of Lynn A Brewer. Checks payable to LCH Administration, 43830 10th St. W., Lancaster, Calif. 93534.

Mike Sougstad

Mike Sougstad, 64, Fulton, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at his home.
Survivors include one son, Steve Sougstad, Indianapolis; one grandson, and one sister, Evalyn Claggett, Mitchell.
He was an interim executive director for the High Plains Western Heritage Center in the 1980s.
Memorial services were held Saturday, May 8, at First United Methodist Church in Mitchell.
A memorial has been established to a scholarship fund at Dakota Wesleyan University.

Rev. Milo Dailey

BELLE FOURCHE - The Rev. Milo Deering Dailey, 84, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at his Belle Fourche home.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, with a prayer service and Masonic rites at 7 p.m., at Kline-Frost Funeral Home in Belle Fourche.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at St. James Episcopal Church in Belle Fourche. Burial will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
He was born April 22, 1920, at Des Moines, Iowa, to Milo D. Dailey II and Myrtle (Bowman) Dailey and was raised on a farm near Letcher. He completed country school and graduated in 1937 from Mitchell High School. He attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell a year before he moved with his family to Coon Rapids, Iowa, to start a Chrysler-Plymouth auto dealership that later added Harley Davidson motorcycles to the lineup.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until 1945. He served in several posts in the continental U.S. and in Alaska, including in the Aleutians.
In 1959 he returned return to school. He graduated from Dakota Wesleyan in 1961 and moved to Cambridge, Mass., to attend the Episcopal Theological School, affiliated with Harvard University. He received a master's in divinity degree in 1964 and returned to Iowa where he was ordained a deacon and later a priest that year.
He served briefly at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Des Moines, then took a charge at Emmetsburg and Algona, Iowa. In 1968 he moved to Deadwood to take charge of the St. John's Episcopal Church there. He moved to Spearfish All Angels Episcopal Church in 1975 and remained there until his retirement in 1991. After retiring, he unofficially served churches throughout the Black Hills, including St. James in Belle Fourche. He served as dean of the Black Hills deanery.
He was active in the Masonic fraternity more than 60 years and was active in York and Scottish Rites in Iowa and South Dakota. In various communities besides Masonic work, he also took leadership roles in the American Legion, Rotary, Kiwanis, DeMolay and ministerial associations.
He was a member of the Spearfish Police Department Reserves as a uniformed officer and also served as chaplain for the department for more than 12 years. He also served on the board of directors of Lookout Memorial Hospital from 1979 to 1988.
He married Margaret Catherine Walker Jan. 30, 1942, at Marysville, Mo. She died in an automobile accident in 1961. He married Barbara Ann Belmont June 10, 1961.
Survivors include three sons, Milo Dailey IV and Carla of Belle Fourche, Mike Dailey and Jan of Hill City, and James Daniel "Dan" Dailey and Katie Pederson of Belleview, Wash.; a daughter Margaret "Becky" and John Thurston of Corpus Christi, Texas; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and his first wife, Margaret.
Memorials may be made to the Mutual Ministry at St. James Episcopal Church.

Wayne Shields

Funeral services for Wayne Shields, 66, of Chamberlain, will be Thursday, Nov. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the St. James Catholic Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Pukwana cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Nov. 19 from 1-8 p.m. with a scripture service at 7 p.m. at the Wevik Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain.
Wayne Shields was born Leonard Wayne Shields on Aug. 29, 1937, at Fort Thompson, to Mark and Doris (Coler) Shields. He attended school in Fort Thompson through his sophomore year. He attended his junior year in Springfield High School, where he was selected to attend Boy's State, and graduated from Pukwana High School in 1956. He received a diploma from Haskell Junior College in 1958. During his summers, he worked on several significant archeological projects with the Smithsonian Institute and the University of Kansas.
Wayne enlisted in the Army in 1960 and spent most of his three-year tour of duty in Germany. He was honorably discharged as a Specialist 4th Class in 1963, and was in the Army Reserves until 1966. On April 18, 1964, Wayne married Jan Westendorf in Chamberlain. They subsequently had three sons, and raised a niece as their own.
He worked at Chilson Refrigeration, and later worked at Northwestern Public Service. In 1980, the family moved to Arizona, and Wayne worked at the Indian Health Service at the Whiteriver Service Unit for 12 years, until he opened a repair shop in Pinetop, Ariz. In 1996, the family moved back to South Dakota. Wayne became ill in 1992, and it became necessary for him to reside in the Walker Assisted Living residence in Spearfish, in the fall of 1998.
Wayne loved hunting, horses, NASCAR racing, and his family. He was a member of the Chamberlain Volunteer Fire Department during his years residing there, and also belonged to the Lion's and Legion Clubs.
Wayne passed away on Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, 2003, at Spearfish.
He is survived by his wife, Jan of Chamberlain; sons, Scott and wife Tracy of Whiteriver, Ariz., Dan of Pinetop, Ariz., and Ken and wife Laura of Duluth, Ga.; and by a daughter, Tina Emerson and husband Chris of Winterhaven, Calif. Other survivors include his brothers, Mark of Chamberlain and Del of Pukwana; 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ed.

Beverly J. Salyards

Beverly Jean (Juso) Salyards, 73, of Swannanoa, N.C., died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003, at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Beverly was born Jan. 16, 1930, at Chadron, Neb., to Georgia M. and Archie D. Salyards. She graduated from Lead High School and attended nursing school in South Dakota.
She was an LPN at St. Joseph's Hospital in Deadwood; the Department of Veteran's Affairs Medical Centers in Salisbury and Asheville, N.C., and Hot Springs and Sturgis. She was employed by Meridian Nursing Center in Salisbury, N.C.
She is survived by her sons, Mark Juso of Swannanoa, N.C., Brian Greba of Deadwood and Brad Greba of Spearfish; daughters, Cori Juso Overcash of Salisbury, N.C., and Brend Juso Phillips of Gillette; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 at Summersett Memorial Chapel. Cremation has taken place.
Visitation will take place an hour before the services on Saturday at the chapel.
