Sister Medarda Heimes OSB

S. Medarda Heimes OSB, 89, died July 4, 2006 in the Sacred Heart Monastery Care Center, Yankton.
A wake service will be held Thursday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m. and the Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 7 at 10:30 a.m. in Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the monastery cemetery. Wintz & Ray Funeral Home, Yankton, is in charge of arrangements.
Medarda Heimes was born in a country home near Hartington, NE, on February 28, 1917 the daughter of Emil and Anna (Arens) Heimes. Her father died when she was nine months old. Her mother, brother and sister then moved to live with her maternal grandparents. She later spent two years living with an aunt and uncle. She first attended a country school and later St. John's School in Fordyce, NE. Following graduation from Fordyce High School in 1935, her mother encouraged Medarda to attend Briar Cliff College in Sioux City. After one year of college she helped with work at home.
The question, "Why did God make me?" was one she often pondered. The encouragement of her parish priest, retreats at Mount Marty, and the example of her cousin, S. Colette Van Heek OSB, led her to enter Sacred Heart Monastery in June 1942. She entered the novitiate the following year, made first profession in 1944 and her final profession on June 24, 1947. She earned a bachelor's degree from Mount Marty College.
S. Medarda's ministry included many years of elementary classroom and music teaching in South Dakota and Nebraska including 11 years at Holy Trinity Elementary School in Hartington.. After retiring from teaching in 1986, S. Medarda assisted the participants of Adult Day Care at the Benedictine Center in Yankton. Of this experience she said, "that it was rewarding to brighten the day for the participants who otherwise would spend a dull day alone." She also helped with the Mount Marty College curriculum library.
S. Medarda was a very gentle woman with a ready smile and a giftedness for music and art which she shared with others. In recent years she especially enjoyed visits from her family including her niece, Laura, who often brought her flowers or a new kitten to meet.
S. Medarda is survived by her Benedictine community; one sister-in-law, Catherine Heimes, Yankton, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Amanda; and brother, Edwin.
