Dennis ‘Rory’ O’Connor
VERMILLION — Dennis “Rory” O’Connor, 79, of Vermillion died Sunday (April 12, 2009) at the Hudson health Care Center, Hudson.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Iverson-Siecke-Kober Funeral Home, Vermillion.
Lorraine Lois Johnston
Following the sudden onset of a serious illness, Lorraine Lois Johnston, 87, passed away April 4, 2013 at her winter home in Mission, Texas. Die to this illness she was not able to return to her home in Watertown. All four of her children made the trip to Texas to see her and two were present at the end.
Lorraine was born 11-2-1925 in Marion, South Dakota to Cleveland Grover Gapp and Mary Jane (Crandall). She grew up in Stockholm and Strandburg area. She was very close to her step-father (Ervin Larson), who helped raise her. She graduated from South Shore High School in 1944, and then moved to Watertown to work for a lawyer. She married
Harold (Babe) Johnston on 11-4-45. Five children were born to this marriage: Carol (Bill) Bentson of Fountain, Minnesota; Doug Johnston of Yelm, Washington; Dianne (Rick) Benting of Redfield, SD; Steven (Mary) Johnston of Spanaway, Washington; and Jean Marie Johnston (deceased).
Loraine and Babe farmed and raised registered Guernseys near Summit, SD. Lorraine was a very active and talented lady. She enjoyed, sewing, cooking, and canning. She spent many years milking cows and engaging in all the work involved with farm life. Through the years she was involved with her church, ladies aide, teaching Sunday school, 4-H, and extension club. After retiring from the farm, Lorraine and Babe moved to Watertown and wintered in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas.
Loraine was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one daughter (Jean Marie), one sister (Inez Larson), one brother (Leonard Gapp), and one grandson (Billy Joe Bentson). She is survived by four children, twelve grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, one brother (Tracy Gapp and wife Aneta) of Arizona, and many other relatives and friends. These include friends and acquaintances in Redfield.
Cremation took place in Mission, Texas with the Ric Brown Family Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Watertown. Lorraine is a member of St. Martin's Church in Watertown.
Mabel Pauline Mulford
Mabel Pauline Mulford, age 98, of Crofton, Nebraska, died Friday, January 23, 2009, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota.
A Graveside Service will be at 1:00 PM, on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at the Garden of Memories cemetery in Yankton with Reverend Dani Jo Ninke-Greaver officiating. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, on Monday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Mabel was born January 12, 1911, to Art and Adda (O'Brien) Hill in Bloomfield, Nebraska. She grew up in the Bloomfield and Llindy area, where she attended rural schools. She married
Samuel Mulford on April 17, 1929, in Niobrara, Nebraska. They lived and farmed in rural Niobrara until they moved to Llindy where Mabel worked for Addison Exchange as a telephone operator. After a few years they moved back to the Niobrara area where they continued to farm. Samuel died in November of 1977. She lived in the Niobrara area for most of her life, until she moved to Crofton, where she lived up until her death. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, canning, gardening, and raising hogs.
She is survived by her special friend, Ted Michaels of Crofton; three children, Charles Mulford of Niobrara, Nebraska, Dallas (Sue) Mulford of Ogallala, Nebraska, and Bonnie (Paul) Cash of Niobrara; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Samuel; three children, Dennis Mulford, Dixie Rathmann, and Eugene Mulford; five brothers, Ben, Howard, Jack, Walter, and Wilford Hill; one sister, Ruby Olson; one half-sister, Ruth O'Brien Hill; one grandchild, Samuel Mulford.
Duane "Pomp" Pomplun

Aberdeen, SD - There will be a private family service for Duane "Pomp" Pomplun, 70, of Aberdeen.
He died January 19, 2010 at his home.
Duane Pomplun, son of Leland and Nerene (Turnquist) Pomplun was born February 19, 1939 at Frederick, SD. He was a game warden for the State of South Dakota.
Survivors include one daughter, Kim (Keith) Richter of Leola, one sister, Wanda Emery of Aberdeen, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
His parents, two daughters, Cindy Wylie and Kris Hohne and one brother, Chandler preceded him in death.

Lucas Dean Grimm

Aberdeen, SD - Funeral service for Lucas Dean Grimm, stillborn son of Troy and Jessica (Schaeffer) Grimm of Aberdeen will be 10:00 am, Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.
Burial will be in Eureka City cemetery at 12:30 pm.
He died July 18, 2010 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Grandparents are maternal, Norman Schaeffer and paternal, Merlin and Mary Grimm.

John E. Marttila

Frederick, SD - Funeral service for John Edwin Marttila, 87, of Frederick will be 10:30 am, Monday, July 26, 2010 at Savo Lutheran Church, rural Frederick. The Rev. Galen Sylvester will officiate.
Burial will be in South Savo Lutheran cemetery with military graveside rites by Lynn G. Peterson American Legion Post #273.
There will be a prayer service Sunday at 7 pm with visitation from 4-7 pm at the funeral home.
He died Monday, July 19, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital.
John Edwin Marttila, son of Frans Frederick and Helmi Maria (Hirvaskari) Marttila was born October 22, 1922 at Frederick, SD. Soon after his birth, his family moved back to the family farm which is now a century farm. This is where he grew up while attending country school and graduating from Frederick High School with the class of 1940. He then chose to farm with his family. In 1946, he entered the United States Army, where he was stationed in Korea. He was honorably discharged March of 1948 and returned to the family farm. He was a general farmer with dairy and hogs.
He was united in marriage to Annikki Visuri on July 12, 1975 at Ylivieska, Finland. They have made their home on the farm together working and raising their family.
John was a gentle natural caretaker. He enjoyed reading, fishing, hunting, woodworking and playing the harmonica. John and Annikki also loved to travel to Finland.
He was a life member of Savo Lutheran Church where he did a lot of volunteer work, also, a member of the Frederick Farmers Union, Lynn G. Peterson American Legion Post #273 and Savo Hall Association. For many years he served as the treasurer on the Savo Township Board.
Survivors include his wife, two daughters, Marianne (Douglas) Marttila-Klipfel of Aberdeen and Heidi (David) Marttila-Losure of Frederick, three sisters, Edna Bierman of Aberdeen, Ida Dalton of Sarasota, FL and Helen (Henry) Kolehmainen of Portland, OR, one brother, Leo (Lillian) Marttila of Frederick and six grandchildren, Viena, Eliana, Amara and Briella Klipfel and Sofia and Erik Losure.
His parents, two brothers, Arnold and Matt and four sisters, Helmi Joensuu, Eva Borchard, Sylvia Mikkonen and Verna Laurila preceded him in death.
Honorary Casketbearers will be Frederick area farmers.
Casketbearers will be Douglas Klipfel, David Losure, Donald Laurila, Gary Mikkonen, Dale Marttila and Al Dosch.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made to South Savo Lutheran cemetery, c/o Calvin Raisanen, 10120 393rd Ave., Frederick, SD 57441.
The organist will be Pat Dennert and there will be special music be The Klipfel Brothers.

Margaret L. Horak
(March 13, 1921 - August 4, 2012)
Margaret L. Horak, 91, of Dell Rapids passed away Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center from complications of pneumonia.
Memorial services will begin at 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at the Minnehaha Funeral Home Chapel in Dell Rapids.
Margaret was born March 13, 1921 at Sibley, Iowa to parents Andrew and Johanna (Bouwer) Luxen. She graduated from Worthington High School.
Margaret married
James Horak, Jr. August 9, 1941 at Worthington, MN. She moved with him to various Air Force bases while he served as an Army Air Corps pilot in World War II After his discharge they lived in Austin, MN, Rapid City, SD and Brookings, SD where she worked as a bookkeeper for Northwestern Public Service Company. Margaret and James traveled extensively with their Winnebago motorhomes. She served as president of the state Ringneck Winnies Travel Club.
After their retirement they moved to Mims, FL where they followed the NASA Space Program, witnessing over 70 launches and landings. Fishing was always a big part of her life and they enjoyed almost 30 years of surf fishing on the shores near Kennedy Space Center. Margaret loved to bake and there was never a day in their house without cookies, cakes or her special apple pies. Her husband and son where avid hunters and fisherman so she learned how to cook all they brought home. She taught her family to appreciate nature with her extensive flower and vegetable gardens. Her kind nature, great sense of humor and positive attitude was a powerful influence in her family’s lives. Margaret woke smiling every morning and sang or hummed her favorite songs.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Ronda (Dave) Reimers, Gilford, NH, James (Claudia) Horak III, Ellijay, GA and Carol (Mick Boyles) Horak, Dell Rapids; three grandchildren, Kimberly (Richard) Sola, Kristel (Michael) Acre and Thomas (Kirsten) Horak; five great-grandchildren, Kelly Sola, Christopher Sola, Ryan Sola, Gillian Horak and Sonia Horak; Mick’s daughter, Brooklyn Boyles; three sisters, Anne Roskam, Titusville, FL, Edna Lowery, Pacific Grove, CA and Sharlene Hohensee, Worthington, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, James in 2007.
Janie Lannigan

Eureka, SD - A Celebration of Life for Janie Lannigan, 69, of Eureka will be 6:00 pm, Friday, July 30, 2010 in Janie’s backyard, 805 12th St., Eureka. All are welcome.
Inurnment will be in Black Hills National cemetery.
She died July 16, 2010 at Avera Eureka Health Care Center.
She was united in marriage to Sherman “Biff” Lannigan on July 18, 1959 in Las Vegas, NV. Her husband died May 10, 2009. Janie had great friends and she wanted them all to know she loved them very much.
Survivors include one daughter, Karri (Randy Helman) Fischer of Eureka and two grandchildren, Ryan Helman of Eureka and Krissy Helman of Watertown.

Marion Nelson

Ellendale, ND - Funeral service for Marion Hall Nelson, 93, of Ellendale will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at Presbyterian United Methodist Church at Ellendale. The Rev. Paul Henschen will officiate.
Burial will be in Ellendale City cemetery.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Marion Hall Nelson, resident of Ellendale for nearly 75 years, passed away Thursday, July 15, 2010 at Prince of Peace Care Center at Ellendale.
Marion Hall, daughter of Dr. Fred and Mattie (Andresson) Hall was born April 15, 1917 in Monango, ND. She attended Valley Township schools near Monango and graduated from eighth grade in 1931. Her education was cut short to care for her younger siblings after the untimely death of her father. Marion completed her high school education through the GED program in 1971, 40 years after her eighth grade graduation.
She was united in marriage to Raymond Nelson on October 25, 1935 at the Baptist Church Parsonage in Ellendale. They moved to Ellendale in 1937, living in the same home for the next 68 years. Marion will be remembered for operating Halls Café in Ellendale with her brother, George Hall for 12 years. She also had a role in many Ellendale weddings, baking many wedding cakes in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Together with her husband and sons, she worked with the family business, Nelson’s Painting Service.
Marion is best remembered as Ellendale’s Avon Lady. She began as a representative in 1949 and for the next 55 years continued to sell up to the day she entered Prince of Peace Care Center in 2005, at the age of 88. She was distinguished in the Avon President’s Club, the highest Avon award, for many years and in a letter from the President of Avon she was recognized for her continuous years of sales including 1, 430 consecutive “campaigns”. She served as the district manager for the area from 1970 thru the 1980’s.
Marion was active and a vocal community leader. She served on the Ellendale Betterment Committee receiving the Governor’s Award for her work on the Bi-Centennial in 1976. Marion was a lifetime member of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and the Ellendale Homemakers Club. She was an active member of the Ellendale First Baptist Church for 50 years and taught Sunday school for most of those years. She attended Presbyterian United Methodist Church later in her life.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Delbert (Sharron) Nelson of Ellendale and James (Nancy) Nelson of Springfield, Ill., one daughter-in-law, Joyce Nelson of Atlanta, GA, one brother, James Hall of Boise, ID, seven grandchildren, Dean, David, Kate, Chris, Cheri, John and Jeff and 15 great-grandchildren.
Her parents, husband and one son, Rev. Donald Nelson preceded her in death.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made to Prince of Peace Care Center.
