Maxine Knickrehm
Maxine Knickrehm, 102, Rapid City, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011, at Golden Living Center of the Black Hills.
Maxine was born in Doland on Aug. 15, 1909, to John Frank and Lura (Stephenson) Austin. She graduated from Doland High School in 1928. Maxine and Earl Knickrehm were married
June 5, 1933, and lived on the Knickrehm farm north of Lake Byron. They lived there until his death in 1964 and she then moved to Sioux Falls. She was a 60-year member of the Rebekah Lodge, a member of the Methodist church and a devoted volunteer for the Sioux Valley Hospital Auxiliary in Sioux Falls.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Lou (Wayne) Saugstad, Rapid City, Karen (Robert) Nelson, Billings, Mont., and Bonnie (Wayne) Gutzmer, Black Hawk; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Knickrehm; brother, Gerald Austin; and sister Velma Bielski
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 29, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mary Ann Sheldon officiating.
Interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Riverside cemetery in Huron.

Angeline V. McCone
Angeline V. McCone, 91, of Long Beach, CA, died Monday, September 26, 2011 in Long Beach. Her funeral will be Saturday, October 1, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the Wesleyan Church in Redfield, SD. Angeline was born August 30, 1920 in Orient, SD to Charles and Flora (Stevens) Schmidt. She grew up in Redfield and graduated from Redfield High School. Her first two years of college were in Cincinnati, OH and then she graduated from Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD. She started teaching in 1941. Angeline and Robert Clyde McCone were married
in 1943. Angeline taught in South Dakota, Montana, Arizona, Michigan and California. She received her B.A. degree from Long Beach State University and her Lifetime Teaching Certificate Credential.
She was dedicated to her husband and her two children. Whether it was the ministry or the teaching field, Angeline and her husband worked side by side and were married
for sixty years.
Angeline is survived by her daughter Evangeline (Steve) Pearson of Riverside, CA; and her five grandsons: Robert McCone, Ryan (Arden) Pearson, Michael McCone, Steven McCone and Aaron Pearson. She felt close to several cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Clyde, in 2004 and her son, Robert Clyde McCone, Jr. in 2010 and her sisters: Vera Becker, Helen Becker and Lillian Haney and two brothers: Richard Schmidt and Charles Schmidt.
Retired Air Force Colonel Stanley R. Sebring
Retired Air Force Colonel Stanley R. Sebring, age 88, a long-time Fairhope resident, died on September 22, 2011 at Wm F Greene VA Home in Bay Minette, AL.
Stan Sebring, a native of Redfield, South Dakota was born May 19, 1923. He attended the University of South Dakota where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He entered the Army Air Corps Aviation Cadet Program in 1943 and became a pilot and Second Lieutenant in May 1944. During his 30-year Air Force officer career he served in three wars: World War II, Korea and Viet Nam. As a bomber pilot in WWII he flew a combat tour of missions over Germany. After the war he attended the University of Southern California and flew as a pilot in the California Air National Guard. In 1948 he accepted a regular commission in the USAF. Sent to Korea in June 1950, he flew 100 combat missions as a jet fighter and reconnaissance pilot. In addition to his combat tours, he served two three-year peacetime tours of duty in Germany and tours at Shaw AFB, SC, at Hq. USAF at the Pentagon, at the Air University in Montgomery and Dannelly Field as the Air Force Advisor to the Alabama Air National Guard, and at Pacific Command Hq. in Hawaii as Chief of the Joint Reconnaissance Center. He was a graduate of the Air Force Intelligence Officers School and the Air Command and Staff College. With a rating as a Command Pilot, he accumulated over 5000 hours of flying time and was awarded The Legion of Merit, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, The Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal with silver and bronze oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal, plus numerous campaign medals and other military decorations.
Following retirement, he and his wife, Rebecca, owned and operated Objects, a gift and decorative accessories shop in downtown Fairhope. Many Fairhopers will recall him in his red suit and home-grown white beard as the jolly Santa at Objects. Over the years he was active in a variety of civic organizations and activities. He enjoyed having performing roles in several Theatre 98 Productions. With a keen interest in literature and art, he enrolled as a regular full-time student at the University of South Alabama – with a double major in English and Art. He joked that he was always the oldest kid in every class. Graduating in 1980 he received the English Department’s scholarship award. He was a former member and officer of the Fairhope Lions Club and the Fairhope Rotary Club. He served several terms as an officer or director of the Eastern Shore Art Association. As an avid reader he was a dedicated member of the Friends of the Fairhope Library. He was also a life member of the Military Officers Association of America and University of South Alabama Alumni.
Stan was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Maurine Wheeler, of Huron, SD.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Rebecca Thomas Sebring, of Fairhope, two sons, Stanley R. Sebring, Jr. and Craig R. Sebring, and two grandchildren, all residents of the state of Washington. Additionally he is survived by one sister, Betty Beaudoin, of Stafford, VA. Rebecca’s three children, Thomas Howard Rush, Patricia Rush Merck, both residents of GA and Melissa Rush Phillips, a resident of SC, adopted him as “Pappy” and so did their eight children.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Jessie Weeks, Covenant Hospice and the C Wing staff of the Wm F Greene VA Home for their selfless service and care.
A memorial service will be held at 1300 (1 pm for civilians) on October 1 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home, 19698 Greeno Road, Fairhope. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Eastern Shore Art Association, 401 Oak Ave., Fairhope, AL 36532 or to the Friends of the Fairhope Library, c/o Fairhope Public Library, 501 Fairhope Avenue, Fairhope, AL 36532.
Edmund "Ed" Stefani
(January 13, 1952 - November 18, 2011)
Edmund G. Stefani, 59, of Sioux Falls died Friday, November 18, 2011 at his home.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial will be in the Benton Lutheran cemetery, rural Crooks.
Edmund Gustav Stefani was born January 13, 1952 in De Smet, South Dakota to parents Gustav and Frieda (Mordas) Stefani. As an infant he moved with his family to Sioux Falls. He received his education in Sioux Falls and married
Bonnie Benson February 8, 1974 at Benton Lutheran Church, Crooks. They lived in Sioux Falls after their marriage.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Bonnie Stefani, Sioux Falls; children, Robert (Becky Skinner) Stefani, and Emily (Ryan) VanMeekeren, both of Sioux Falls; four grandchildren, Chicago, Micah, Bailey, and Mercedes; a brother Robin, Baltic, three sisters, Marianne Wing, Phoenix, Sabina Stefani, Sioux Falls and Roswitha Heldenbrand, Dell Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two bothers, Dietmar and Gerald.
Bridgette E. Twining
Bridgette Elizabeth Twining, age 18, of Chanhassen, MN, died Saturday, September 3, 2011 in Carver, MN, tragically due to an automobile accident.
Visitation was Friday, September 9, 2011, 4-7 PM at the Bertas Funeral Home, 200 W. 3rd St., Chaska, with a Service at 7 PM. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to an equestrian jump to be erected in honor of Bridgette.
Bridgette was born March 22, 1993 in Minneapolis, MN, to Thomas and Natalie (Wittenhagen) Twining, one of two children. She graduated from Chanhassen High School in 2011 and attended Normandale College, Bloomington, MN, during her senior year of high school for post secondary education. She was planning to attend UW Stout, in Menomonee, WI, for Environmental Science and Pre-Veterinarian degrees. Her true love were her horses, Mayya and Corner Pocket, and enjoyed the outdoors, camping, running, and spending time with family and friends.
Bridgette was preceded in death by her grandfather, Richard Twining, and cousin, Abigail Marie Wade.
Survivors include her parents, Tom and Natalie Twining; brother, Michel Twining, all of Chanhassen; grandparents, Delmar and Joyce (Michels) Wittenhagen, of St. Cloud, Marilyn Twining, of Dexter, MI; aunts and uncles, Stacey Wade, of Eagan, John (Susanne) Twining, of Stockbridge, MI, James Twining, of Plano, TX, Tim (Maggie) Twining, of Houghton, MI, Rev. Kathryn Twining, of London, England; and many cousins.
Funeral arrangements were with the Bertas Funeral Home, of Chaska, MN.
Ethel Crowe
FORT THOMPSON — Ethel Crowe, 69, Fort Thompson, mother of Cecil McBride Sr. of Watertown, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at a Sioux Falls hospital.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Fort Thompson Tribal Hall with the Revs. James Pearson and Everett Harrison officiating.
Burial will be in the Presbyterian cemetery in Crow Creek.
There will be a wake service tonight (Wednesday) at the Fort Thompson Tribal Hall beginning at 8 p.m. The Wevik Funeral Home of Chamberlain is in charge of the arrangements.
Ethel Crowe was born Dec. 31, 1930, at Fort Thompson to Isaac and Lillian (La Monte) Crowe. She married
Joseph McBride Jan. 18, 1946, at Pierre.
Survivors include six sons, Roland McBride, Joseph McBride Jr. and George McBride, all of Yankton, Cecil McBride Sr. of Watertown, Melvin McBride of Sioux Falls and Ivan Goodface of Pierre; two daughters, Carol Negrete-Olmedo of Sioux Falls and Florence Hill of Fort Thompson; a brother, Carl Crowe of Highmore; a sister, Sylvia Crowe of Pukwana; special friend, Henry Goodface of Lower Brule; many grandchildren and great-children; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
Lola F. Ragels
Lola F. Ragels, 90, of Redfield, SD, died Monday, April 15, 2013 at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Redfield. Father Christopher Hughes will celebrate the mass. After a time for lunch and fellowship the burial will be in Wessington. Visitation will be Friday from 1-8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield.
Lola was born February 12, 1923 in Timber Lake, SD to Floyd and Catherine (Cable) Winegar. She attended school in Vayland, SD and high school in Huron, SD. She lived with her sister in Washington for a few years before marrying Lloyd Grogan in 1945 in Miller. They lived in Wessington, SD and owned and operated the Bar and Pool Hall for twenty years. She worked at the Miller Hospital, in the nursery, for a few years. Lola married
DeWayne Ragels in 1973. She worked at South Dakota Developmental Center-Redfield retiring in 1987. She also worked at the Coffee Shop, VFW and Coachman Supper Club.
She enjoyed playing piano, dancing and arts and crafts.
Lola was a member of the Red Hats, TOPS program and VFW auxiliary.
Lola is survived by her son Craig Grogan of Redfield, her step daughter Colleen (Mike) Novotny of Winner, SD and their children: Tyler, Tiffany and Tanae; and her step son Jimmy’s children: Jonathon Ragels and Amanda Armstrong. She is also survived by her brother Jim (Marjorie) Winegar of Redfield, her sister Rosemary (Al) Hall of Redding, CA; and two special nieces: Jeanie (Dick) Harrington of Redfield and Lois Grogan of Rapid City, SD.
She was preceded in death by her husbands: Lloyd and DeWayne, her son Marc, her step son Jimmy and three sisters: Antoinette Sorenson-Heiser, Ramona Prentice and Evelyn Winegar.
Paul J. Jensen
Paul J. Jensen, age 88, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Friday, June 9, 2006 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 AM, on Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Gayville Lutheran Church in Gayville, South Dakota with Reverend Nate Haaland officiating. Burial will be in the Danish cemetery in Gayville. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM on Monday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton, family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Pallbearers are Ernie Jensen, Clinton Kaser, Glen Nelson, Dan Dringman, Craig Jepsen, and Michael Jensen.
Paul was born April 2, 1918 in Yankton, South Dakota to Harold and Minnie (Junker) Jensen. He grew up in the Gayville area and attended Whitehall School in rural Gayville, South Dakota. At an early age he took over and began operating the family farm outside of Gayville. He married
Caroline Rinnan on June 1, 1941 on her family farm in rural Gayville. After their marriage Paul continued to operate the family farm and established his own farming operation. He enjoyed dancing, music, spending winters in Arizona with his wife, traveling, classic cars, playing cards, and especially spending time with his friends and family. He was a member of Kiwanis of Yankton and Gayville Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Caroline; one son and his wife David and Janet Jensen of Yankton; one grandson and his wife Michael Jensen and Paula Worley of Wichita, Kansas; one great granddaughter Lydia; and three nieces, Sharon, Linda, and Judy.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Arthur and John Jensen.

Leroy F. Brooker
Leroy F. Brooker, 87, of Tulare, SD, died Sunday, April 21, 2013 at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield. His funeral will be Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Tulare United Church in Tulare, SD. Pastor Lorah Houser Jankord will officiate. Burial will be in the Graceland cemetery near Tulare, with military rites. Leroy Franklin Brooker was born December 3, 1925 in Belmont Township, Spink County, SD to Franklin and Rose (Blume) Brooker. He attended country school through junior high until his family moved to Los Angeles, CA. After Leroy graduated from high school in Los Angeles, he moved back to South Dakota to begin farming. He served in the United States Army, during the Korean War, from 1951 to 1953. Leroy married
Elsie Kopplin on November 10, 1953. They began their life together on the family farm, where they raised their three children.
Leroy enjoyed playing kittenball and cribbage, woodworking and carpentry. He spent many hours helping his son, Dave, with his racecar adventures. He served nineteen years on the Tulare Independent School Board and many years on the church board. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Elsie and their three children: Paula (Daryl) Ames, Peg Brooker and David (Becky) Brooker all of Tulare. He was also blessed with four grandsons: Jake and Dan Ames and Wyatt and Andy Brooker.
Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters and their husbands: Elenore (Harry) Throgmorton, Leona (Nick) Spathos; his sister-in-law and her husband Marjorie (Richmond) Noble and nephews: Steven Noble and Steven Spathos.
Janice Joy Cwach
Janice Joy Cwach, age 67, of Yankton, South Dakota, went peacefully into the arms of her Lord, Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton after a lengthy illness with cancer and Alzheimer's.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, on Saturday, November 8, 2008, at First United Methodist Church in Yankton with Reverend Dean Trapp officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories cemetery in Yankton. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, on Friday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service and video tribute at 7:00 PM.
Janice was born October 12, 1941, to Leonard and Florence (Spurrell) Sachse in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She grew up in De Smet and Hartford, South Dakota until her family moved to Yankton. She graduated from Yankton High School in 1959 and attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota for two years. She moved to Sioux City, Iowa where she lived and worked until she married
Larry Cwach May 1, 1965, in Yankton. They moved back to Yankton after their marriage where Janice raised their four children. Janice attended Mount Marty College in Yankton graduating with a BA in religious studies in 1989. She worked at Dale Electronics and the Yankton Area Adjustment Training Center in Yankton until retiring in 1995.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Yankton, volunteering whenever she was needed. She was very active in the United Methodist Women, bible study, and Sunday school at the church. She was a very dedicated and loving mother and grandmother. She lived her life for her church and her family.
She is survived by her four children, Shari (Dave) Kuehler of Yankton, Dr. Heather Cwach of Rapid City, South Dakota, Eric (Tonya) Cwach of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Jason (Stacy) Cwach of West Des Moines, Iowa; two grandchildren, Kayli and Jenna Cwach of Sioux Falls; two sisters, Rosalie Apps and Anita (Al) Fagerstrom both of Duluth, Minnesota; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and nephew, Stewart Apps.
Betty Miller
(September 9, 1930 - December 12, 2012)
Betty Jane Miller passed away December 12, 2012 at the Sanford Hospice Cottage after battling brain cancer.
She was born September 9, 1930 to Deede and Thomas Varns in Flandreau. She grew up in the Chester and Colton area, graduating from Lyons High School in 1948. Later that year she married
Vincent Miller. They farmed near Colton, raising five children. They retired to Sioux Falls in 1995.
Betty was always active in the United Methodist Church, loved singing and directing the choir in Texas. She loved the 17 winters they spent in Texas and enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. She and Vince volunteered at Sanford Hospital for 16 years and were named 2012 Volunteers of the Year. She was a loving wife and mother and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew and loved her.
Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Vince, Sioux Falls; children, Barbara (Keith) Bullock, Atlanta, GA; Donna Johnson, Sioux Falls; Dave (Lorie) Miller, Mitchell, Karen (Mike) Sexton, Sioux Falls; Sheri (Shane) Swedlund, Sioux Falls; ten grandchildren; Heidi Hulme, Kirsten Gebhardt, Jeremy Bullock, Heather Smith, Mike Miller, Siana & Spencer Swedlund, Samantha Solomon, Echoe & Phillip Ragel (Johnson); eleven great grandchildren; Jarrod & Karsten Hulme, Seth & Nathan Bullock, Reed & Annika Smith, Majesta, Hannah, & Katarah Johnson, and Gavin Solomon; four siblings, Goldie Varns, Loretta (Duane) Miller, Norman (Dorothy) Varns, and Eula Varns and family friend, Marlys Woolheater, all of Sioux Falls.
Waiting to greet her in heaven are her parents, son in law, Stan Johnson, infant great grandchild, Miranda Bullock, five siblings, Virginia Bandura, Ed Varns, Erma Lahn, and Dorothy Welbig, and an infant James Varns.
Visitation will be from 4-6:00 PM Sunday, December 16, 2012 with a time of sharing at 6:00 PM at Sunnycrest United Methodist Church, Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM Monday, December 17, 2012 at Sunnycrest United Methodist Church.
