David Jon Hofer
David Jon Hofer, age 49, of Yankton, South Dakota died Saturday, January 13, 2007 at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota from an acute illness related to his 18 year long battle against lymphatic cancer.
A funeral service will be at 5:00 PM, on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at the Yankton High School Gymnasium with Reverend Dean Trapp officiating. Visitation is from 3:00 to 9:00 PM, on Tuesday, at First United Methodist Church in Yankton with the family present from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton and then resume at 3:30 PM until service time at the school gymnasium. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.
Honorary pallbearers are the Mount Marty and Yankton High School Boys Basketball Players.
Dave was born January 23, 1957 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Verlyn and Mary (Ness) Hofer. He grew up in Lennox, South Dakota and graduated from Lennox High School in 1975. During high school, he worked for his dad at the Lennox Independent Newspaper. Dave then attended South Dakota State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education and Recreation. On August 19, 1977, Dave married
Rhonda Andersen in Lennox. He started his teaching and coaching career in Colman, South Dakota. First, he was the head coach for the girls' basketball team and then coached the boys' basketball team until 1988. After a year in Webster, Dave took the position as the Varsity Boys' Basketball Coach at Yankton High School which he held from 1989 to 1996. He then became assistant coach for the Mount Marty Lancers. Dave helped coach the Lancers until 2006 when he became the Sophomore Boys' Basketball Coach at Yankton High School. During that time, Dave also coached Varsity Track at Yankton High School, where he led the boys and girls jumpers to many conference and state meet honors. While he was coaching in Colman, he started the 3-on-3 tournament and gym rat program and he began those activities in Yankton when he moved. His summers were filled with basketball camps, 3-on-3 tournaments and the gym rat program. Later on in his career, he did motivational speaking for the American Cancer Society. Dave was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Dave loved the outdoors and working in the yard at home. He loved to go hunting, fishing and boating with his family. Dave enjoyed golfing and watching Minnesota Twins baseball. His number one priority in life was spending time with his family. Every summer, they would go on a family vacation together. He loved watching his daughter, Mariah, run cross-country. Throughout his life, Dave touched many students' lives as a teacher and coach.
Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Hofer of Yankton; three children, Mitchell (Anne) Hofer of St. Paul, Minnesota, Michael Hofer of Port Hueneme, California and Mariah Hofer of Yankton; parents, Verlyn and Mary Hofer of Lennox, South Dakota; two brothers, Doug (Carolyn) Hofer of Pierre, South Dakota and Bill (Holly) Hofer of Sioux Falls; one sister, Becky (Dave) Wensink of Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.
Dave was preceded in death by his grandparents.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be directed to the David Hofer Scholarship Fund which will be established at Yankton High School.
Rhea Rossiter
Rhea Rossiter, age 94, of Hartington, Nebraska, died on Friday, November 14, 2008 at the Boulder Community Hospital in Boulder, Colorado.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 10:30 am at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with Rev. Jeffery Loseke officiating. Burial will be in the St. Michael's cemetery in Hartington. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm with a rosary at 4:30 pm and a Vigil Service at 7:00 pm at the church. Visitation will be on Friday from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church. Rhea was born on August 10, 1914 at Decatur, NE to Ferdinand and Mary (White) Schmiedeskamp. She grew up in Walthill and Wayne, NE. She graduated from Walthill High School in 1930 and then attended Wayne Teachers College where she received her Teaching Certificate. She worked as a social worker in South Sioux City, NE until she married
Vincent E. Rossiter Sr. on August 5, 1935 at Pender, NE. They moved to Hartington, Nebraska in 1937.
Rhea enjoyed playing cards, dancing, golfing, camping, and traveling. She was an accomplished piano player and belonged to several bridge clubs. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Guild, Catholic Daughters of America, and the Christian Mothers.
Rhea is survived by 6 children and their spouses; V.E. Jr. and Joyce Rossiter of Hartington, Nebraska, Don Rossiter of Hartington, Phyllis and Leon Schrempp of Yankton, Carol Rossiter and Steve Sturek of Macon, Georgia, Max and Roberta Rossiter of Fresno, CA, Mary Beth Rossiter of Boulder, CO, 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and a sister; Mary Sue and Merlyn Weddingfeld of Hartington.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Vincent, on September 25, 1990 at the age of 76, a daughter, Greta Frantz, two brothers, Ray and Max Schmiedeskamp, and a sister, Clare Summers.
Leland Elwood Monroe Nelson
(January 18, 1924 - April 22, 2012)
Leland Nelson, 88, of Sioux Falls passed away Sunday, April 22, 2012 at Sanford Foundation Hospice Cottage.
Funeral service has been planned for 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 909 W. 33rd St. Sioux Falls. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8:00 PM Tuesday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.
Leland Elwood Monroe Nelson was born January 18, 1924 to Iver and Annie (Brekke) Nelson at Renner. He graduated from Baltic High School and received an Agriculture Education degree from South Dakota State University in 1951.
He was united in marriage to Bernice Hoiness in 1952. They lived in Clear Lake, South Dakota until 1957 when they moved to Sioux Falls. He was a sales representative for an agricultural business until 1977 when he started their business, Grain Dryers Inc.; which he operated until 2000. He also was actively involved in farming until 2010.
He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and was a big fan of his grandchildren’s sporting events.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Adrian and an infant nephew, James.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bernice, Sioux Falls; two daughters, Nancy (Tom) McGraw, West Des Moines, Iowa and Dawn (Rick) Backer, Sioux Falls; two grandsons, Corey and Austin Backer; two sisters, Frances Rogers, Los Alamos, New Mexico and Mary Lee, Bismarck, North Dakota and several nieces and nephews.
Arlene Gall
Arlene Gall, age 77, of Yankton, South Dakota died Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Parkview Medical Center in Pueblo, Colorado.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM, on Friday, November 7, 2008 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton with Father Bob Lacey officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories cemetery in Yankton. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, on Thursday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a Scripture service at 6:00 PM followed by a rosary.
Pallbearers are William Boese, Gene Novak, Chuck Turner, Bruce Cull, Dale Clark and Tim Turner. Honorary pallbearers are Amy Slethaug, Jennifer Cull, Sarah Clark, Brian Boese, Alyssa Boese and Katie Turner.
Arlene was born on October 4, 1931 in Alexandria, South Dakota to George and Frances (Laughlin) Bird. She attended grade school in Bridgewater, South Dakota. The family moved to Ramona, South Dakota where she graduated from high school. After high school, she settled in Yankton. On August 22, 1957, Arlene married
James Gall. Arlene was a faithful employee at Gurney's Seed and Nursery for 40 years, retiring in 1996. Arlene and James raised three children and loved taking family trips to the mountains and the ocean. She treasured the time with her family and was always looking forward to the next holiday when they could all be together. Arlene also enjoyed her flowers, playing cards, cooking and watching birds.
Arlene is survived by her husband, James Gall of Yankton; 3 daughters: Valerie (William) Boese of Dixon, NE, Patricia (Gene) Novak of Gilbert, AZ and Susan (Chuck) Turner of Pueblo West, CO; 7 grandchildren: Alyssa and Brian Boese, Jennifer (Bruce) Cull, Amy (Gavin) Slethaug, Sarah (Dale) Clark, Tim and Katie Turner; 4 great grandchildren: Elliot Cull, Gabrielle Keiser, Samuel Clark and Mathias Slethaug; brother, Donald Bird of Madison, SD; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arlene was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Rose Melick.

Alois "Louie" Novak
Alois "Louie" Novak, age 82, of Yankton, South Dakota was called home with tender mercy by the Heavenly Father on Friday, December 5, 2008 at Wakonda Heritage Manor in Wakonda, South Dakota.
Funeral services are 1:30 PM, on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Yankton with Reverend David Wildermuth officiating. Burial with military honors will be in the Komstad cemetery in rural Centerville, South Dakota. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, on Wednesday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service and video tribute at 7:00 PM.
Pallbearers are Brad Cap, David Cap, Wayne Dullerud, Chuck Larson, Mark Logsdon, Scott Logsdon, Victor Novak and Larry Schwarz. Honorary pallbearers are Brian Novak, Kristen Schubert, Jennifer Novak, Alex Schubert, Amanda Hauck, Rosalyn Dullerud, DuWayne Kozak, Harold Logsdon and Nancy Robb.
Louie was born December 4, 1926 on the family farm in Yankton County to Charles H. and Marie (Kozak) Novak. He attended Peterka Grade School and then Yankton High School. He farmed with his dad and in January of 1951, Louie joined the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. On June 5, 1955, Louie married
Jeanette Anderson in Beresford, South Dakota. Farming was Louie's life. Jeanette and he lived on the family farm for 52 years before moving into Yankton. Louie was also a member of the Farmer's Union, American Legion, the VFW and UCT.
Louie is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Jeanette Novak of Yankton; three children: Steven (Nancy) Novak of Decatur, IL, Bernice Hauck of Tyndall and Irene (Kevin) Schubert of LaVista, NE; and five grandchildren: Brian and Jennifer Novak, Amanda Hauck, and Kristen and Alex Schubert.
Louie was preceded in death by his parents.
Leo F. Lane
Leo F. Lane, age 87, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Avera Yankton Care Center in Yankton.
Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 AM, on Thursday, February 12, 2009 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Reverend Bob Lacey officiating. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart cemetery in Yankton with military honors provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, on Wednesday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a rosary at 7:00 PM followed by a Scripture Service at 7:30 PM.

Leo was born June 20, 1921, in Yankton, South Dakota to Edward and Carrie (Hacecky) Lane. He attended Roosevelt Rural School. Leo was united in marriage to Mildred L. Kaiser on July 15, 1941. World War II took Leo away from his new wife when he was drafted into the Army as a soldier in the 55th Armored Infantry Battalion, 11th Armored Division. From 1942-1945, he was stationed in the European Theatre. Upon his discharge from the Army, Leo and his family moved back to Yankton, where he worked for Gurney's and later Larson Bros. Sheet Metal Shop. In 1958, the family moved to Vermillion, SD, where he opened Lane's Sheet Metal Shop. After suffering a heart attack, Leo went to work as a Heating Engineer for the University of South Dakota for 21 years. Leo retired in 1986, later they returned back to Yankton. He was a talented man who could fix anything. Leo made his family's first camper and boat. Leo enjoyed camping, baseball, football, playing cards and spending time with his family and friends. Leo was a life long member of the VFW and held many offices including commander during that time. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Senior Citizen Center, Charter Member of Clay County Rambler Camping Club and a Charter Member of Good Sam Second Chance Campers. Leo was a wise man with a dry sense of humor who always had a kind word for everyone. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Leo is survived by his wife, Mildred Lane of Yankton; 3 children: Judi (Sonny) Olson of Yankton, Mary-Lou Lane of Parker, CO, and Rick (Aleshia) Lane of Aurora, CO; a daughter-in-law, Cora Lane Gehrt of Manhattan, KS; 4 granddaughters: Lynda Heggestad, Teresa Ewing, Mindy Crandall, and Michelle Lane; 1 grandson, David Lane; and 5 great-grandchildren: Curtis Lane Knapp, Sean and Katie Crandall, Carter Ewing, and Heith Brownell.
Leo was preceded in death by 2 sons: Kenny and Jerry Lane; his parents; 2 sisters, Helen Kaiser and Elsie Lane; and five brothers: Ed, Charlie, John "Bucky", Norman and Glen Lane. He is the last of the six Lane brothers.
David L. Larsen
David L. Larsen, age 59 of Hartington, Nebraska, died on Monday, September 08, 2008 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.
Funeral Services will be on Thursday, September 11, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with the Rev. Jeff Loseke officiating. Burial will be in the Hartington City cemetery.
Visitation will be on Wednesday from 1-8:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:30 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska. Visitation will continue on Thursday at church one hour prior to services.
Pallbearers will be Doug Whipple, Shannon Tuttle, Ron Larsen, Larry Dickes, Terry Dickes, Gary Dickes, Jeremy Hinton, and Matt Meyer.

David Lawrence Larsen was born on January 7, 1949 to Paul and Isabell (Wubben) Larsen. David grew up in Hartington, Nebraska and graduated from Cedar Catholic High School in 1967. He joined the Marine Corps in 1967 and spent two years in Vietnam. David married
Sharon (Tuttle) Whipple on October 14, 1977. He farmed for over 20 years east of Hartington. For the past 10 years David has been working for the Cedar County Road Department.
He was a lifetime member of the Hartington VFW Post #5283. He enjoyed fishing, football, his family and the vacations he took the past few years.
David is survived by his wife, Sharon of Hartington; two sons, James Larson of Yankton, SD, Richard Larson of Hartington, one stepson, Doug and his wife Bonnie Whipple of Menominee, NE; four brothers and their wives, Arlo and Mardel of Yankton, SD, Donald Larsen of Cambridge, IL, Paul Larsen Jr. of Hartington, Allen Larsen of Fort Collins, CO; one sister, MaryKay Dickes of York, NE; 3 grandchildren, Jon, Dustin and Brandi.
David was preceded in death by his parents, one brother James Larsen, one sister Elaine; sister-in-law, Gale Larsen, and brother-in-law, Rodney Dickes.
John A. Carda
A mass of Christian burial for John Carda, 86, Cham-berlain, formerly of Chelsea, was held Friday, Feb. 10, 2006, at St. James Catholic Church, Chamberlain. Burial was in St. Margaret’s Catholic cemetery, Kimball. The Hickey-Wevik Funeral Chapel, Chamberlain, was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Carda died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Mid Dakota Medical Center, Chamberlain.
He was born March 1, 1919, on the family farm in Spink County to James and Josephine (Cihak) Carda. He attended grade school at Chelsea and high school at Northville until being called home to farm the family homestead.
He married
Erma Knie June 11, 1953, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen. Together they farmed the family homestead until his retirement. John and Erma spent several winters at South Padre Island before moving to Chamberlain in October 1997.
For many years John was an outstanding pitcher for the local Chelsea baseball team. He loved fishing and hunting. The greatest delight in his life was bringing his children and wife along on fishing trips. He enjoyed playing cards and also belonged to the James Valley Trap Shooting Club. He was a longtime member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Chelsea.
Survivors include his wife: Erma, Chamberlain; one son: David (Cherie) Carda, Viborg; four daughters: Mrs. Duke (Donna) Goodell, Rapid City, Mrs. Michael (Linda) Smith, Kimball, Mrs. Ronald (Carol) Gillen, White Lake, and Bette Hirsch, Sioux Falls; one sister: Clara Joyce, Gilroy, Calif.; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Louis and Joseph, and one son-in-law: Dennis Hirsch.
Robert Lee Soma
(September 9, 1935 - May 27, 2012)
Robert Lee Soma, 76, of Sioux Falls, died on Sunday, May 27, 2012, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. A Celebration of Life will begin at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls. Interment will be in the West Nidaros Lutheran cemetery, rural Crooks. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 P.M. Tuesday, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 P.M. at the church.
Robert Lee Soma was born on September 9, 1935, at Mt. Vernon, South Dakota, to Ole and Grace (Hommersand) Soma. He grew up in Mt. Vernon, Winnifred, and Oldham. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1954 and was discharged in 1957 at the rank of Sergeant. Following his discharge, he lived in Sioux Falls until moving to Baltic in 1965. Bob was a craftsman all his life. He farmed in the Baltic area for 20 years, and worked at John Morrell’s for 38 years until his retirement in 1997. He moved to Sioux Fall in 1985.
Bob married
Dorene Baker on June 3, 1988, at Hope Lutheran Church, in Sioux Falls. He was an avid birdwatcher and took pride in his home, yard, and all endeavors. Bob was a member of the American Legion and Abiding Savior Free Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. He loved to read and would especially enjoy books on South Dakota and World War II history. He loved his country and was blessed with three children and three step-children. Bob was well loved by all who knew him. A stranger, to Bob, was someone he had not yet met.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Dorene, Sioux Falls; children: Gary (Sarah) Soma, Rosemount, MN, David (Lisa) Soma, Tea, and Kathleen (Karl) Person, Omaha; step-children: Kari (Don) Jennings, Hartford, Steve “Chico” Baker, Yankton, and Jeff (Leah) Baker, Barnesville, MN; 17 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; siblings: Elaine Espedal, Mitchell, Marilyn Jerde, Sioux Falls, Arvin Soma, Fairmont, and Betty Jorgensen, Spearfish; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings: Ardis, Myrna, Norma Jean, Richard, Howard, and Merrill.
