Lawrence E. Hansen
RAPID CITY Lawrence E. Hansen, 74, Rapid City, SD, died on Monday, August 5, 2002, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center.
Visitation was from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, August 7, 2002, at 9 a.m. at the Black Hills National cemetery, with Rev. Howard Smith officiating and burial with military honors.
Lawrence was born at Jamestown, Kansas, on July 6, 1928, to Orel Norman and Beulah Christina (Caraveau) Hansen. He grew up in Kansas and served in the U.S. Marines from January 1952 to January 1954. In 1960, he moved to Deadwood, SD, and there he managed the J.C. Penney Store until 1972, when he moved to Brookings, continuing to work for J.C. Penney. He later moved to Rapid City to live, spending 25 years with J.C. Penney.
Lawrence was very active in the Rapid City AA Club.
Survivors include one son, Mark Hansen of Brookings, and two grandchildren, Jeremiah and Jason Hansen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.
Pearl M. Petik
KELDRON Pearl M. Petik, 87, rural Keldron, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, N.D.
Survivors include one daughter, Shirley Alexander, Sun Prairie, Wis.; four sons, Oliver Petik, Sandy, Utah, Jerry Petik, Meadow, James Petik, Keldron, and Jerry Petik, Watford City, N.D.; one brother, Dell Oliver, Shadehill; one sister, Helen Everson, Edgerton, Wis; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Jim Petik, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon and from 6:30 p.m. until a 7 p.m. family service today at Hope Presbyterian Church 13 miles south of Keldron.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at Spencer Memorial Presbyterian Church in Lemmon, with the Rev. P.J. Southam officiating.
Burial will follow at Greenhill cemetery in Lemmon.
Marianne Goetz
NEWELL Marianne Goetz, 82, Newell, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at Belle Fourche Long Term Care Center.
Survivors include two sisters-in-law, Betty Olson, Blaine, Minn., and Mrs. Dennis Price, Pittsburg, Calif.
Her husband, Edwin Goetz, preceded her in death.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery in Yankton, with the Rev. Greg officiating.
Kinkade Funeral Chapel of Sturgis is in charge of arrangements.
Charles W. Edler
RAPID CITY Charles W. Edler, 56, of Rapid City died Saturday, August 3, 2002 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Chuck was born on July 15, 1946 at Jackson, Miss., to Charles Homer and Edna Marie (Roberts) Edler. Raised in a military family, they relocated to the Rapid City area in 1950.
Chuck graduated from Rapid City High School in 1964. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was commissioned as an Electronics Warrant Officer in 1981. Chuck served his country for over 28 years.
Upon his military retirement, he completed a master's degree in social work. He continued to serve his community, working for the Pennington Country/City Detox Center and his fellow veterans at the Black Hills Health Care System (VA) in Hot Springs. Chuck worked and lived by the principles of the 12-step program. He was a loving, devoted husband and family man.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Lynn Edler of Rapid City, two sons, Charles W. Edler, Jr. of Victorville, California, Anthony R. Maielli of San Diego, California, one daughter, Jessica A. Maielli of Rapid City, one sister, Patricia Urban, and her husband, William of Nemo, one brother, Howard W. Edler, and his wife, Marlene, of Rapid City, his stepfather, Richard Kindt of Rapid City, beloved nieces and nephews, Ora, Susan, Sarah, John, Sammy, Elizabeth, and his great-niece and nephew, Hannah and Scott.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6, 2002, at Kirk Funeral Home (1051 E. Minnesota Street) in Rapid City, and one hour before services.
Services will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, August 7, at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis with full military honors.
A memorial has been established for the voluntary services at the Black Hills Health System (VA).
Ruby Mae Hetterley
LEMMON Ruby Mae Hetterley, 82, Lemmon and formerly of McLaughlin, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Covington Heights Care Center in Sioux Falls.
Arrangements are pending with Evanson Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.
Dan Freese
RAPID CITY Dan Freese, 40, of Rapid City, died of heart failure at Rapid City Regional Hospital on Saturday, August 3, 2002.
He was born on May 25, 1962 in Rapid City to Jerry and Therese Freese. Dan graduated from Rapid City Stevens High School in 1980.
Dan married
Lori Peck and from this union three children were born. He worked for the family business for 18 years until his failing health made it impossible. Dan loved sports of all kinds and was knowledgeable about them, especially Braves baseball.
Dan is survived by two sons, Adam and Sean, and his daughter, Brianna, all of Rapid City; his parents, Jerry and Therese Freese; one brother, Mike, and his wife, Carol; four sisters, Mary Kent and her husband, Jim, Kate Gordon and her husband, John, Laura Wagner and her husband, Steve, and Nancy Scott and her husband, Don, all of Rapid City; his good friend Dianna Keester of Spearfish; and 19 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Philip.
Visitation will be today from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Rapid City, with Rev. Michel Mulloy as the celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary cemetery in Rapid City.
Eugene Gene' Williamson
BELLE FOURCHE Eugene "Gene" Williamson, 39, Independence, Kan., and formerly of Belle Fourche, died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, as the result of a car accident in Kansas.
Survivors include his mother, Anita Williamson, Spearfish; his father, Mike Flaska, Coffeeville, Kan.; four brothers, Randy Williamson, Lanny Williamson, Kenny Williamson and David Williamson, all of Belle Fourche; one sister, Julie Flaska, Coffeeville; and his grandfather, Kenneth Leeling, Belle Fourche.
Arrangements are pending with Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.
Mary Mae' Melvin
RAPID CITY Mary "Mae" Melvin, 93, Rapid City, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at Fairmont Grand Manor.
Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Bjork, Rapid City, and Gail Geling, Miltona, Minn.; one sister, Grace Shelton, Tucson, Ariz.; five granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.
MaryAnn Bierman
RAPID CITY MaryAnn Bierman, 82, Rapid City and formerly of Mansfield, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Wesleyan Health Care.
Survivors include one daughter, Karen Hoellein, Rapid City; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City.
Robert C. Speed' McAllister
HOT SPRINGS Robert C. "Speed" McAllister, age 79, passed away at his home in Hot Springs, Saturday, August 3rd surrounded by his loving wife and family. "Speed" was born in Philip, S.D. on May 22, 1923 to Dr. E.J. McAllister and Grace (Snyder) McAllister and spent his most memorable childhood years in Lemmon, S.D. The family then moved to Hot Springs but before graduating from High School, Speed joined the early war effort by volunteering for the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940 at the age of 17. When the United States entered the war, he transferred to US service and became the youngest captain in the 9th Air Force at the age of 19. Speed fought in the European Theater as the Operations Officer and Test Pilot of the 450th Bomb Group for the duration and flew "everything with a propeller." Speed was proud to receive his High School diploma in 2000 at the Hot Springs All Class reunion.
He married
Alma Rademacher on June 1, 1946, his loving wife of 56 years. He spent his entire life in Hot Springs where he and Alma raised three children, Karren Kruse of Rapid City, son Bob of Lakewood, Colo., and Connie Rincker of Hay Springs, Neb.
After the war, Speed owned a taxi service and thoroughbred race horses. Speed's career as a salesman for Black Hills Packing Company selling Rushmore Meats spanned 33 years.
Speed was an avid supporter of all high school sports, fished and hunted everything allowed, was a member and officer in the Elks Lodge, VFW and American Legion and also served on the Hot Springs City Council.
In the mid-70's Speed discovered the game of golf and was a lifelong member and supporter of the Southern Hills Golf Course.
Speed was proceeded in death by his parents, brother Jim and sister Margaret
He is survived by his wife, Alma, brother-in-law Bob Petrusse of Aurora, CO, son Bob (wife Debbie), daughters Karren (husband Duff) and Connie (husband Roger), seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A Christian wake will be held in Hot Springs at St. Anthony's Catholic Church on Tuesday, August 6th at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at St. Anthony's Catholic Church on Wednesday, August 7th at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at the Evergreen cemetery in Hot Springs.
A memorial has been established for the Southern Hills Golf Course and St. Anthony's Catholic Church.
McColley's Chapels of the Hills Hot Springs is in charge of arrangements.
Robert Bob' Griffith
PIERRE Robert "Bob" Griffith, 55, Pierre, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at his home.
Survivors include one brother, John Griffith, Mobridge, and two sisters, Mary Bohnenkamp, Gettysburg, and Betty Lindbloom, Pierre.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Scriptural rosary service was held Friday, Aug. 2, at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. John's Catholic Church in Fort Pierre.
Joyce A. Sattler
RAPID CITY Joyce A. Sattler, 74, Rapid City, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at her home.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Sattler, Eugene, Ore.; one son, Warren Sattler, Menlo Park, Calif.; one sister, Carol Johnson, St. James, Minn.; and two grandsons.
Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.
Vera Hollmann Smith
WAGNER Vera Hollmann Smith, 96, Wagner, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Good Samaritan Center in Wagner.
Survivors include three daughters, Lois Munson, Bonesteel, Ruby Wiechmann, Wagner, and Marilyn Butts, Rapid City; two brothers, Robert Van Deusen, Carlinville, Ill., and Orville Van Deusen, Hannibal, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Louise Brock, Santa Rosa, Calif., and Bernadine Matthiesen, Redding, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Two husbands, Otto Hollmann and Earl Smith, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, at Clements-Wiese Funeral Home in Armour.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at United Church of Christ in Armour.
Burial will be at Pleasant Ridge cemetery in Armour.
