Herbert A. Rabe
RAPID CITY - Herbert A. Rabe, 91, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, in Pearlington, MS.
Survivors include his son, Dennis and wife Linda, Rapid City; his daughter, Jan Rabe, Pearlington, MS and a brother, Allen Rabe, Spearfish; 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and his wife of 52 years, Twyla.
Herb was born in Belle Fourche, SD August 17, 1910, and was orphaned at the age of 11. He, his brother and sister lived with various families in the area each doing apprenticeships in various trades. Herb was an apprentice for Tri State Bakery in Belle Fourche for several years before moving to Edgemont, SD and starting his own bakery with his wife Twyla. In 1958 they owned and ran the Rolling Pin Bakery in the "new" Baken Park Shopping Center until they retired.
Herb was a lifetime member of the Rapid City Elks Lodge. He loved to golf, play cards, play pool and fly his private plane. Arrangements are pending and a memorial has been established at the Rapid City Elks Lodge.
Donroy J. Shangreaux
PINE RIDGE - Donroy J. Shangreaux, 81, Pine Ridge, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, in Sturgis.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys Shangreaux, Pine Ridge; three sons, Donroy Shangreaux Jr., Provo, Utah, LynDale Shangreaux, Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Jimmy Shangreaux, Pine Ridge; one daughter, Susan Shangreaux, Pine Ridge; five stepdaughters, Lindy Trueblood, Evelyn Eagle Bull, Darrelyn Yellow Bird and Shanna Palmier, all of Pine Ridge, and Gloria Goggles, Ethete, Wyo.; two brothers, Robert Palmier, Kyle, and Dennis Palmier, Pine Ridge; and two sisters, Joan Palmier, Rapid City, and Renee Janis, Kyle.
One-night wake begins at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pine Ridge.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9 a.m. Monday, July 15, at the church, with the Rev. Steve Sanford officiating.
Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Stephen's Catholic cemetery in Kyle.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.
Jennie Sly
STURGIS - A funeral service for Jennie L. (Kuronen) Sly, 90, of Sturgis, will take place at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home on Friday, July 12, at 10 a.m., with Chaplain H.B. Cleveland officiating, followed by burial at Black Hills National cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. She died July 7 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
She was born May 30, 1912, at Newell, to William and Lydia Kuronen. She attended school in Newell before moving to Sturgis in 1931, where she first worked at Eric's Bakery (later Weimer's Bakery), and then from 1936 to 1945 at the Duck Inn Cafe, which she owned and operated. From 1945 to 1962, she worked as a sales clerk at J.C. Penney Co. In 1962, she married
Earl ("Slick") Sly.
Her interests included working in her flower garden, bird watching, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles and reading about local history. She was also an excellent cook.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, June H. Kuronen of Mesa, Ariz.; and six nieces and nephews, Kay Jung of Hawaii, Gary Huffman of El Dorado Hills, Calif., Dennis Kuronen of Glennside, Penn., Darcy Kuronen of Brookline, Mass., Karen Grant of Mesa, Ariz., and James Leep of Petaluma, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Alma Brannon; three brothers, Jolly, Bill, and Eddie Kuronen; and her husband.
A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Hills in her memory.
Dorcus R. Stewart
EDGEMONT - Dorcus R. Stewart, 53, Edgemont, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at her home.
Survivors include her mother, Ruth Stewart, Edgemont, and two brothers, Dallas Stewart and Douglas Stewart, both of Edgemont.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, July 12, at McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Edgemont.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at United Church in Edgemont, with the Rev. Elizabeth Jazzman officiating.
Burial will be at a later date at Pleasant View cemetery in Stanfield, Ore.
Terry John Huber
RAPID CITY - Terry John Huber, 52, Rapid City, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at his home.
Survivors include two sisters, Luella Kleine, Belle Fourche, and Arlene Shadduck, Lakewood, Wash., and two brothers, Leo Huber, Mobridge, and Dale Huber, Rapid City.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 12, at Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Home in Rapid City, with the Rev. Marvin Jones officiating.
Burial will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
Emma S. Mattson
SPEARFISH - Emma S. Mattson, 94, Spearfish and formerly of Lead, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.
Survivors include three sons, Ralph Mattson, Green Valley, Ariz., and Jon Mattson and Jim Mattson, both of Deadwood; eight grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mayme Varrow, Milwaukee.
Her husband, Walter Mattson, preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until time of services, which will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 12, at Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.
Burial will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established.
Kenneth E. Bogener
RAPID CITY - Kenneth E. Bogener, 70, Rapid City and formerly of Omaha, Neb., died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at a Rapid City nursing home.
Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Schmitz, Rapid City, and Julie Barr, Belleview, Neb.
Services will be at a later date in Omaha.
Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of local arrangements.
Margaret O. Rogers
RAPID CITY - Margaret O. Rogers, 71, Rapid City, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Phillip Rogers, Rapid City; two sons, Phillip S. Rogers, Rochester, Minn., and Dennis Rogers, Rapid City; two brothers, George Tomovick, Stratobowl, and Donald Tomovick, California; one sister, Martha Drickey, California; and four grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.
Clarence Wieser
WASTA - Clarence Wieser, 73, Wasta, died at his residence Wednesday, July 10, 2002.
Born May 31, 1929, in Nashville, Kansas, to John and Susan (Gillen) Wieser. They moved to S.D. when he was a baby. He graduated from Wasta High School and then married
Audrey Nachtigall on July 23, 1954, in New Underwood, S.D.
He worked for Meade County Highway Department for 13 years maintaining rural roads. Clarence and Audrey have farmed and ranched north of Wasta since 1958. He was a talented carpenter and woodworker. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved to fish. He was a member of St. Margaret's Catholic Church all of his life and volunteered many hours in helping construct and remodel churches, homes and community projects.
Survivors include: Son, John Wieser of Box Elder and his children Karrie Ann, John Jr. and Claire Wieser. Daughter, Bernie and her husband Mike Davis of Douglas, Wyoming, and their children Lennie and Macy Davis. Son, Paul Wieser of Box Elder and daughter Dana Wieser. Daughter, Jane and her husband Bruce Jensen of Owanka, S.D., and their children, Amanda and Lonny Jensen. Daughter, Shirley and her husband Kevin Koch of Owanka, S.D., and their children Rose, Matthew, Trisha, Cameron, and Brandon Koch. Daughter, Deann and her husband Jeff Barber of Enning, S.D., and their children Shawn and Laura Barber. Three sisters, Mary Hoehn and Mildred Cooper of Rapid City, and Agnes Hause of Ogema, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Joe, Harold, Gerald, and Carl Wieser; two sisters, Angie Carpenter and Kathryn Fenner; and two infant grandsons.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City. Christian wake services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Church in New Underwood, with Rev. Dan Juelfs as the celebrant.
Interment will be in the Lakeside cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
Leo James Miller
STURIGS - Leo James Miller, 79, Sturgis, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at his home.
Survivors include one brother, Robert Miller, Kimball; one sister, Lillian Powers, Kimball; and one stepgrandson.
His wife, Caroline Miller, preceded him in death.
He served in the U.S. Army for 21 years.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis.
A rosary will be at 10:45 a.m. Friday, July 12, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Gary Oreshoski officiating.
Burial, with military honors by Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard, will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
Richard Lee Glenn
RAPID CITY - Richard Lee Glenn, 44, Rapid City, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, in Wanblee.
Survivors include his wife, Mercy Glenn, Rapid City; two daughters, Amber Glenn and DeAnna Glenn, both of Rapid City; three sons, Emery Good Shot, Jeremey Good Shot and Prince Glenn, all of Rapid City; one brother, David Glenn, Wanblee; one sister, Kathy Glenn, Wanblee; and nine grandchildren.
A wake will be this evening at Atonement Lutheran Church in Rapid City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, July 12, at the church.
Burial will follow at Mountain View cemetery in Rapid City.
Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.
James H. Blair
SPEARFISH — James H. Blair, 81, Spearfish, died Friday, June 14, 2002, at Dorsett Health Care Facility.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include two sons, James Blair Jr., Dover, Del., and Donald Blair, Portland, Ore.; one daughter, Peggy Elliott, Hill City; two sisters, Mary Jenkins, Caldwell, Texas, and Ruby Blaylock, Steens, Miss.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye.
Private family services will be at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.
