Carolyn Denu Bowen
RAPID CITY - Carolyn Denu Bowen, 74, Rapid City, died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
She was born January 11, 1928, in Omaha, Neb.
As a young girl she lived with her family and grandparents, Judge Albert and Adeline Denu, in Rapid City. She attended school in Rapid City and graduated from Rapid City High School. She attended the University of Colorado, Boulder.
She is survived by two cousins, Beverly Coolidge Shaw of Boulder, Colo., and Karen Denu Dodson of Gallup, N.M.; one aunt, Louise Denu (Mrs. Richard) of Gallup, N.M.; other family, Margie Shaw Miller of Frederick, Colo., Steven Shaw of Lafayette, Colo., Andrew Shaw of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Katherine Birkbeck, Stephanie White and Heather Stahl; and a longtime friend, Sharon Ervin.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Grace and Bill Parker, and her grandparents, Judge Albert and Adeline Denu and Jack and Bess Kightlinger.
Funeral services will be Saturday, May 25, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary, with Reverend Bruce Baum officiating.
Burial will follow at Mountain View cemetery.
Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Rita Ann Barta
STURGIS - Rita Ann Barta, 61, Sturgis, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at her home.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin Barta, Sturgis; six daughters, Cindy Dennis, Red Owl, Cathy Morris, Susan Baldwin and Leann Barta, all of Sturgis, Brenda Barta, Long Beach, Calif., and Debbie Barta, Box Elder; her father, Robert Gregg, Spearfish; four brothers, Robert Gregg, Fort Pierre, Mike Gregg, Cokato, Minn., Alan Gregg, Brookings, and Bill Joe Gregg, Pierre; four sisters, Mary Garity, Hayes, Peggy Roseland, Spearfish, Donna Nelson, Lead, and Sharon Turner, San Francisco; and nine grandchildren.
Closed-casket visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Monday, May 27, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Harold Brink officiating.
Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established.
Leonard Clifton 'Bud' Williamson
SPEARFISH - Leonard Clifton "Bud" Williamson, 92, Spearfish and formerly of Newell and Vale, died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.
Survivors include his wife, Hilda Williamson, Spearfish; two sisters, Virginia Williamson and Mabel Trohkimoinen, both of Spearfish; two sons, Harold Williamson, Palm Springs, Calif., and Dale Williamson, Fresno, Calif.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Monday, May 27, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, and for one hour before services Tuesday, May 28, at Independent Congregational Church in Newell.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. John Williamson officiating.
Burial will follow at Hope cemetery in Newell.
John P. Harrington
DUNNELLON, Fla. - John P. Harrington, 61, retired USAF B-52 pilot and businessman died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Munroe Regional Medical Center.
Born in Harrisburg, Pa., he moved to Dunnellon, Fla., from Rapid City, S.D., with his wife in 1998.
Survivors include his wife, Joann of Dunnellon; sons, Patrick of Altus, Okla., and Timothy of McDonough, Ga.; sister, Eileen Abele of Naples, Fla.; grandchildren, Tiffany, John Truman, Sean, and Natalie.
John was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Community, Knights of Columbus, The Elks, The Retired Officers Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Order of the Daedalians.
In his own words, John "graduated from Bishop McDevitt High School as a mediocre student. He graduated without honors from Saint Bernard College in Alabama, where he played four years on the golf team." After college, he joined the United States Air Force and flew B-52's, C-130's and Vulcan bombers, as an exchange officer with the Royal Air Force. He flew over 300 missions in Vietnam. Following his retirement from the Air Force, John was a financial planner with USPA and TRA (now First Command) helping fellow officers and NCO's achieve financial independence.
John was an Officer and a Gentleman. He loved his family and lived by the motto, "practice random acts of kindness and senseless beauty." He was anything but a mediocre human being and will be missed dearly by the many who loved him.
The family of Mr. Harrington will receive friends at Roberts Funeral Home of Dunnellon from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 27, 2002. There will be a prayer service on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at 11 a.m.
A memorial service will be held at the Black Hills National cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association or the National Kidney Foundation in Mr. Harrington's honor.
Ramon M. Coldwell
RAPID CITY - Ramon M. Coldwell, 76, Rapid City, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at a Rapid City nursing home.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Coldwell, Rapid City; two sons, R.M. Coldwell II and Steve Coldwell, both of Rapid City; one daughter, Pamela Kvistad, Pequot Lakes, Minn.; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.
William Samuel 'Sam' DeCory
SPEARFISH - William Samuel "Sam" DeCory, 65, Spearfish, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Jace DeCory; four sons, Dallas, Shawn, Sam Jr. and Dawson; one daughter, Christiane Losch; and one granddaughter.
Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.
George Minard
PHILIP - George Minard, 93, Philip, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Minard, Philip; two daughters, Julie Minard, Long Beach, Calif., and Janet Schnyder, Buena Park, Calif.; and one grandson.
Arrangements are pending with Rush Funeral Home of Philip.
Josephine Fierro
DEADWOOD - Josephine Fierro, 78, Deadwood, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Ysidro Fierro, Deadwood; one son, Charles Brito, Pasadena, Calif.; 11 stepchildren; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday, May 28, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood, with a 10 a.m. Christian wake and rosary.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Paul Dahms officiating.
Burial will be at Oak Ridge cemetery in Deadwood.
Chaput Funeral Home of Deadwood is in charge of arrangements.
May L. Aaberg
RAPID CITY - May L. Aaberg, 90, of Rapid City, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at a local nursing home.
May was born Jan. 26, 1912, at Hot Springs, S.D., to Albert and Laura (Lowney) Aaberg. She spent her childhood on a ranch near Hot Springs. When she was eight years of age her mother passed away. She attended rural country school and later Hot Springs High School and for a brief time Dakota Wesleyan University. May loved horses and spent many hours riding. She had one sister, Annie Maciejewski, and they lived on a ranch near Timber Lake, S.D., and one brother, Charles Aaberg.
She has one niece and three nephews: Betty Mack of Fortuna, Calif., Chuck Maciejewski of Gardena, Calif., Dana Aaberg of Bozeman, Mont., and Jan Aaberg of Seattle, Wash.; and her cousins, Carol Aaberg of Rapid City, Lester Aaberg of Rapid City, Lucille Williams of Box Elder, Shirley Wortham of Hot Springs, Eloise Gull of Edgemont, Eugene Aaberg of Sumner, Wash., Esther Hussong of San Diego, Calif., Ruth Bonine of Worland, Wyo., and Joan Sontag of Denver, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.
May worked for Francis Case on the "Hot Springs Star," then moved to Chicago and worked for Leland Case, Editor of the "Rotarian Magazine." While in Chicago, May enjoyed helping her brother exercise polo ponies for the Butler family. During World War II, she joined the WAC and was stationed for much of the time in Cairo, Egypt. After her discharge May wanted to do more traveling and spent two years in Japan as a civilian employee with the U.S. Army, then on to the U.S. Air Force as a civilian employee in Germany for three years. She worked for the Central Intelligence Agency for two years in Germany and six months in Washington, D.C. She was Executive Secretary to Senator Francis Case from South Dakota for eight years and later Secretary to Congressman Ancher Nelsen of Minnesota until she retired in 1974, having spent most of her life living in the Washington, D.C. area, where she enjoyed the political scene.
After May retired, she enjoyed traveling in the U.S. and abroad and spent many years as a White House Volunteer taking phone calls. She belonged to the Capital Hills Republican Women's Club and The Century Club. She was a lifetime member of the Capital Hill Club and a devoted member of The Church of St. Stephen Martyr. May moved to Westhills Village in 1997 to return to her beloved South Dakota and to be near her family and friends.
Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Evergreen cemetery in Hot Springs, with Fr. Brian Christensen officiating.
A memorial has been established to Storybook Island in Rapid City.
Ramon M. Coldwell
RAPID CITY - Ramon M. Coldwell, 76, of Rapid City, died Thursday, May 23, at Meadowbrook Manor Nursing Home.
He was born March 26, 1926, in Torrington, Wyoming, to Rufus and Gertrude Coldwell. He graduated from Rapid City High School and University of South Dakota in Vermillion.
On August 1, 1947, he married
Betty Rohl in Sioux Falls, S.D. They resided in Rapid City most of their married
life. They were blessed with three children.
Some of his successful business ventures were Ray's Self Service and Coldwell & Associates Real Estate. Ramon and his father were instrumental in founding Motive Parts & Supply, Inc. in 1956, still being run by his sons. He retired from Motive Parts in 1991.
Survivors include his loving wife, Betty, Rapid City; a daughter, Pamela (Roger) Kvistad, Pequot Lakes, Minn.; two sons, Ramon II "Mac" (Renee) and Steve (Timur), both of Rapid City; also five grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and four great-grandchildren; also his friend and caregiver, his Christian sister, Dorothy Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter Rachael Coldwell.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, May 27, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, at First Christian Church, 720 Quincy, with Pastor Dale Bartscher officiating. Interment will be at Mountain View cemetery following the service.
A memorial has been established to Black Hills Humane Society and Cornerstone Rescue Mission.
Ramon was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
Andrew 'Andy' Houston Musegades
MINNEAPOLIS - Andrew "Andy" Houston Musegades, 23, Minneapolis and formerly of Rapid City, died on May 21st of a massive heart attack while at work. Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28th at South Canyon Lutheran Church. Pastor Bruce Thalacker will officiate.
Survivors include: his parents, Kent and Nancy Musegades of Rapid City; his sister Stefanie Musegades Adams and husband, Bob, and their two sons, Tom and Jake; his sister, Meredith Musegades Humke and husband, John and their newborn son Alec. Andy is also survived by several aunts, uncles, and cousins. All of his grandparents preceded him in death: Stan Houston, Harriet Houston Wick, Fremon Musegades and Vera Musegades.
Andy was born on February 2, 1979, in Rapid City, where he attended school. He graduated from Stevens High School in 1998 where he was a candidate for Homecoming King. During all of his school years Andy participated in baseball, soccer, wrestling and football. Andy attended Black Hills State University for one year.
Everyone who knew Andy loved him, as he was very kind and compassionate to all. He was a big guy and was called "the gentle giant" from early childhood. We all will miss him and his incredible sense of humor forever.

Olive Schenk Pawlowski
STURGIS - Funeral services for Olive Schenk Pawlowski, age 75, of Sturgis will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis. Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from noon until 4 p.m.
Olive passed away on Thursday, May 23, 2002, at the Sturgis Community Long Term Care Center in Sturgis.
Olive Schenk was born September 17, 1926, in Spearfish, the daughter of Joseph and Orpha (Merrill) Schenk. She married
Melvin Max Pawlowski in Sturgis on November 13, 1948.
She was a founding member of the Buttons and Bows Social Club, a member of the retired teachers association and a lifelong volunteer at Fort Meade VA Hospital and the Sturgis Hospital and nursing home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a brother and two sisters.
She is survived by her sons, Colonel Donald R. Pawlowski of Mountain View, Calif., Larry J. Pawlowski of Stuttgart, Germany, and Marvin W. Pawlowski of Baton Rouge, La.; a brother, Joseph "Buzz" Schenk of Spearfish, and a sister, Jean Nelson of Dickenson, Texas; and three grandchildren.
Arrangements are with the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis.
