Richard E. Kulesza
STURGIS — Richard E. Kulesza died October 10, 2001, at Sturgis, S.D., at the age of 90. He was the third of five children, born on May 23, 1911, to Alexander and Helen (Christy) Kulesza. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ada; a sister, Ellen Nelson of Sheridan, Wyo.; and nieces and nephews, Helen Arends and Betty Anderson of Rapid City and Wall, S.D., Charles of Rapid City, Eugene of Redlands, Calif., and Nels III, Brad and Brett Nelson of Sheridan.
Richard ranched on the family homestead in Meade County, South Dakota, from 1929 until 1966, marrying Ada Dodge in 1932. They purchased the ranch from his family after the death of his father in 1941. His mother died when he was 14. His brothers, Bernard, Alvin and Elbert, preceded him in death. He served more than three decades on the Board of Directors of the Golden West Telephone Cooperative, Inc. This group was the influencing factor in bringing telephone service to the plains of western South Dakota. By 1979, they had 5, 500 subscribers.
After the blizzard of 1949, Richard installed skis on his Cessna and proceeded to do what he loved the most, "help people." He made trips to Rapid City with people needing hospital care, carried medications and groceries to farms and ranches all around the area, picked up his brother-in-law's wife, who was pregnant, and took her to a car waiting on an open highway for transfer to the Sturgis Hospital (the baby, John Bennett, was born the next morning), and many other missions of mercy.
The mail carrier, Orville Rankin, called Richard and asked for help in mail delivery. They picked up mail at New Underwood, sorted it, tied it in packets and delivered it each day for 17 days. They became quite good at dropping it into a marked area from the air. Richard was also thoughtful of his male counterpart. He always had plenty of chewing, smokes and coffee on hand for delivery to those fellows in need.
Richard enjoyed doing custom combining in western South Dakota, with the help of his brothers-in-law, Wilburt and Junior Bennett. This he continued doing after retirement. In the late 30s, he was softball coach for the Haydraw girls team, sponsoring them and getting many of them to the practices and Sunday games.
Richard and Ada sold their ranch holdings in 1966 and retired to a home they purchased in Sturgis. He often remarked that the happiest time of his life was spent on that wonderful prairie ranch, with his most adored wife, Ada.
Visitation for Richard will be Sunday from noon until 9 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. until service time at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be Monday, October 15, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte cemetery.
