Luther O'Brien

Webster - The funeral for Luther O'Brien, 94, of Webster and formerly of Waubay, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Heritage Village Chapel in Webster. The Rev. Michael Peterson will officiate.

Burial will be in the Ortley Cemetery with Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, and prior to the service Monday at the village chapel.

He died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at the Bethesda Home of Webster.

Luther O'Brien was born March 16, 1908, in Iowa. As a young man he traveled on the railroad to many places and eventually worked for a circus. In the early 1940s, he settled in Ortley where he worked as a handyman and farm laborer. He did odd jobs for many people in the Ortley area. In 1964, he was injured and was unable to work. He was a resident of the Bryant Nursing Home, Heart and Hands Home in Waubay and in 2000 moved to the Bethesda Home of Webster.

Bruce Edward Martinez

Seattle - Bruce Edward Martinez (Wambli Luta), 51, of Seattle and formerly of Little Eagle died of natural causes Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in Seattle.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bear Soldier Gym in McLaughlin. The Very Rev. Leslie Campbell, and Lay Readers Beatrice Skinner, Patty Dedman and Tylene Little Dog will officiate.

Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.

A wake service will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Bear Soldier Gym.

Bertha Meier

Verona, N.D. - The funeral for Bertha Meier, 64, of Verona will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Verona. The Rev. Mathew Pamplaniyil will officiate.

Burial will be at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery in Verona. Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Oakes, N.D., is in charge of arrangements.

A prayer service will be a 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

She died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at the Elim Care Center in Fargo, N.D.

Bertha Malard was born Dec. 6, 1937, to Charles and Hazel (Brown) Malard in Bismarck, N.D. She grew up on a farm south of Menoken, N.D., and attended Telfer School.

She married Julius Meier on Jan. 27, 1957, in Bismarck. The couple then moved to Pierre. In 1959, they moved to Zeeland, N.D., where they farmed on the Meier family farm. In 1974, they moved to Oakes. She worked as a Certified Nurse's Assistant at the Oakes Good Samaritan Center. They moved to Verona in 2000. In October 2002, she entered the Elim Care Center in Fargo, where she lived until her death.

She enjoyed embroidery, cards, fishing, and gardening.

Survivors include her husband Verona; six sons, Andy Meier of Jamestown, N.D., Calvin Meier of Glover, N.D., Clarence (Millie) Meier of Menahga, Minn., Leroy Meier of Oakes, David Meier of Verona, and Eugene Meier of Jamestown, N.D.; one daughter, Kathy (Cory) Anderson of Oakes; three brothers, Leon Malard of Bismarck,

Eugene Malard of Moffit, N.D., and Elroy Malard of Menoken, N.D.; five sisters, Marie Harr, Evelyn Clooten, and Anna Gabel, all of Bismarck, Charlene Gabel of Washburn, N.D., and Eunice Rants of Hebron, N.D.; and 20 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and five sisters.

Casketbearers will be her sons.

Reuben A. Schroeder

Lemmon - The funeral for Reuben A. Schroeder, 82, of Lemmon will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Prince of Peace Chapel of Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon. Lay pastor Florence Hoff will officiate.

Burial will be at 1 p.m. Dec. 3 in the Black Hills National Cemetery south of Sturgis with military honors by the Brattvet-Green American Legion Post No. 66 of Lemmon and the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard.

A family service will be at 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in Lemmon.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

He died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fort Meade.

Reuben Alexander Schroeder was born Dec. 28, 1919, to John and Katherine (Conrodey) Schroeder at Nisland. At the age of 2 he moved to Winner, where he grew up and attended school. He worked on a chicken and turkey processing farm, for a hide and fur business and then in a local lumberyard. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After the Army found out he was only 16, they had him work as a civilian driving officer's wives around, doing yard work and many other jobs at Fort Meade. On Jan. 9, 1939, he went into active service with the 4th Calvary, which later attached to the 8th Infantry. He served as a demolition specialist and armorer until his discharge on Oct. 20, 1945. He earned the European-African Middle Eastern Theatre Service Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, three overseas service bars and a Good Conduct Medal.

He married Olive "Dickie" Caroline Clark on May 31, 1941, in Sundance, Wyo. They returned to Lemmon where they purchased the Style Beauty Shop on Jan. 6, 1946. That same year he attended Green's Beauty College in Rapid City, where he earned his cosmetology license. They operated the beauty shop for many years and were later joined by their daughter. In 1956 they built, owned and operated Fisherman's Haven on the south shore of Shadehill Reservoir during the summer months. In 1987, her health began to fail and they closed Fisherman's Haven. She died Oct. 5, 1994, and he worked in the beauty shop until retiring in 1998.

He was a member of the Brattvet-Green American Legion Post No. 66 of Lemmon and the National Hairdressers Association.

He enjoyed being outdoors, fishing, hunting and doing carpentry work. He loved to dance, play cards and bowl, often bowling on different leagues three times a week.

Survivors include one daughter, Penny (Wayne) Gilpin of Lemmon; one sister, Mary Schuth of Winner; six grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one son, four brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers are Pam Dix, Judy Lutz, Bill Erhart, Rodney Anderson, Pat Clark and Paul Schuth.

Leslie M. Keller

Aberdeen - Leslie M. Keller, 93, of Aberdeen died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at his daughter's residence in Pierre.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Faith United Methodist Church, 503 S. Jay St. The Rev. John Baskins will officiate.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Miller-Huebl Funeral Home, 1111 S. Main St., in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Raymond E. Novak

Sioux Falls - Raymond E. Novak, 73, of Sioux Falls died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Episcopal Cathedral in Sioux Falls.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Sioux Falls with military rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 628 of Sioux Falls. Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m.

Raymond E. Novak was born Sept. 9, 1929, to Raymond L. and Flora Gladness (French) Novak near Dante, S.D.

He married Margaret Guthmiller on Feb. 10, 1962, in Sioux Falls. He was a tailor and also taught school in the Sioux Falls area.

Survivors include his wife of Sioux Falls; and other relatives in the Aberdeen area.

Ruth Wickre

Veblen - The funeral for Ruth Wickre, 89, of Veblen will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Veblen. The Rev. John Peterson will officiate.

Burial will be in the Palestine Cemetery near Veblen with Frank Funeral Home of Lidgerwood, N.D., in charge of arrangements.

A prayer service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. There will also be visitation for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

She died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at the Lake Andes Health Center in Lake Andes.

Ruth Stensrud was born Oct. 3, 1913, to Ole and Julia (Siverson) Stensrud near Watson, Minn. When she was almost three years old, the family moved to a farm near Flaxton, N.D., where she spent her childhood and attended schools, graduating in 1931. She then worked in a general store in Flaxton. In 1934, she moved to Veblen and worked for her uncle at Sivert Siverson's General Store.

She married Leonard Wickre on June 20, 1940, in Veblen. They farmed in the Veblen area for 43 years. He died Aug. 30, 1983, and she continued to live in Veblen.

In spring 1997 she moved to the Haisch Haus, an assisted living home in Bonesteel. In November 1998 she moved to the Lake Andes Health Care Center, where she lived until the time of her death.

She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and a former member of Palestine Lutheran Church near Veblen.

Survivors include one son, Ralph (Judy) Wickre of Veblen; one daughter, Ona (Mark) Ebsen of Fairfax; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, three brothers and two sisters.

Lila Ewart

Aberdeen - Lila Ewart, 77, of Aberdeen and formerly of Northville, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at ManorCare Health Services.

Arrangements are pending with Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield.

Jacob G. Benfit

Aberdeen - Jacob G. Benfit, 87, of 823 S. Kline St., died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W. The Rev. Gregory Tschakert will officiate.

Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery with military rites by Sidney L. Smith American Legion Post No. 24 of Aberdeen.

A rosary service will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.

Visitation will be at the mortuary from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, and from 8 a.m. Monday until the time of the service.

Joe A. Dewald

Bowdle - Joe A. Dewald, 85, of Bowdle died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at his residence.

His Mass of Christian burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Bowdle. The Rev. John Rader will officiate.

Burial will be in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home in Bowdle in charge arrangements.

A wake service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday, and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, all at the funeral home.
