Harold ‘Shorty' Davis
ONIDA — Harold "Shorty" Davis, 80, Onida and Devils Tower, Wyo., died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2001, at his home in Devils Tower.
Survivors include his wife, Marcelleen of Onida and Devils Tower; two sons, Daniel E. Davis and Tim Davis, Deadwood; three daughters, Marcia Kozel, Sioux Falls, Margie Hofer, Onida, and Peggy Schaack, Vermillion; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at United Methodist Church in Onida.
Sarah Jane Kirkland
RAPID CITY — Sarah Jane Kirkland, 82, of Rapid City, died Wed., Nov. 14, 2001, at her home.
She was born Jan. 21, 1919, at Superior, Wis., to Thomas and Zelma (Markham) O'Grady. She received her education at Merrillan, Wis., and then graduated from nurses training at Marshfield, Wis. In 1942, she joined the Army Nurses Corps and served in the South Pacific during WWII and was highly decorated. She then worked at the V.A. Hospital in Milwaukee, Wis. She married
Terrance G. Kirkland on Nov. 29, 1957, at Milwaukee. They lived in Arlington, Va., Butte, Mont., and then Piedmont. She had resided in Rapid City since 1983.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Stagebarn Canyon. She loved camping, fishing and golfing.
She is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Smith of Osseo, Wis.; one brother, Frank J. O'Grady of Rapid City; three stepdaughters, Pamela S. Kirkland and Terry K. Kirkland, both of Monticello, Ky., and Amy L. Kirkland of Milwaukee; one step-granddaughter, Corrina C. Caplan of Milwaukee; and 10 nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, Thomas J. O'Grady.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, with a Rosary Service at 7 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the church, with the Rev. Mark McCormick as celebrant.
Interment will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors by The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA) of Rapid City.
Harold A. Butolph
NEWCASTLE, Wyo. — Harold A. Butolph, 81, Newcastle, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Weston Manor in Newcastle.
Survivors include two sisters, Edith Clark, Las Vegas, Nev., and Nancy Zerbst, Newcastle; and two brothers, Glenn Butolph and Ray Butolph, both of Newcastle.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Worden Funeral Home in Newcastle.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Worden Chapel, with the Rev. Norm Brotzman officiating.
Burial will be at Green Mountain cemetery in Sundance.
Laura Belle Carlson
SPEARFISH — Laura Belle Carlson, 97, Spearfish, died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.
Survivors include five nieces and five nephews.
In keeping with Laura's wishes, she will be cremated, and no services are planned.
Fidler Funeral Chapel in Spearfish is in charge of arrangements.
Harriet Cosgrove
PIERRE — Harriet Cosgrove, 95, Pierre, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.
Survivors include two nieces, Dorothy Layne, Richardson, Texas, and Diane Young, Sioux Falls; and two nephews, Bill Ilgen, Spokane, Wash., and Richard Skola.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre. Burial will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.
Feigum Funeral Home in Pierre is in charge of arrangements.
Ramona Stevens
BELLE FOURCHE — Ramona Stevens, 76, Belle Fourche, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.
Survivors include three sons, Kendell Stevens and Nathan Stevens, both of Belle Fourche, and Stephen Stevens, Huron; three daughters, Lana Reinhardt and Vicki Ross, both of Belle Fourche, and Penny Jones, Spearfish; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche, and one hour before services at the church. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at St. James Lutheran Church in Belle Fourche, with the Rev. Hans Sacrison officiating. Burial will be at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.
Robert H. White
FAIRBURN — Robert H. White, 82, Fairburn, passed away Nov. 15, 2001, at the Greater Fall River Health Services in Hot Springs.
Robert was born April 23, 1919, in White River, S.D. He grew up and ranched in the Fairburn area. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post 303.
Survivors include his son, Robert J. White and his wife Susan of Fairburn; one grandson, James White of Des Moines, Iowa; one granddaughter, Beth McGrew and her husband Blake of Fort Collins, Colo.; great-grandson Forrest McGrew; one brother Earl White of Buffalo Gap; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Della.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Hermosa, with the Rev. H.B. Cleveland officiating.
Burial will be at the Fairburn cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to benefit the Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Hermosa.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs.
Charlene Faye Janis
PINE RIDGE — Charlene Faye Janis, 46, Pine Ridge, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Pine Ridge Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Steve Martin, Pine Ridge; three sons, Corey Clifford, Rapid City, Marcus Mesteth, Rushville, Neb., and Derek Janis, Pine Ridge; five daughters, Martia Lynn Janis, Fort Drum, N.Y., Amber Dawn Mesteth and Daneen Ray Martin, both of Pine Ridge, Linette Gibbons and Mandy Janis, both of Rapid City; her parents, Kenneth Charles Janis Sr. and Bertha Yellow Hawk, Pine Ridge; five sisters, Arlette Janis, Scottsbluff, Neb., Patricia Janis, Pam Janis and Wilma Colhoff, all of Pine Ridge, and Danelle Stewart, Oglala; seven brothers, Robert Janis, Ann Arbor, Mich., Garry Janis and Rodney Janis, both of Pine Ridge, Clifford Twiss, Don Twiss, Rich Twiss and James Twiss, all of Rockyford; and nine grandchildren.
Two-night wake services will begin at 3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19 at Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Billy Mills Hall, with the Rev. Ben Tyon officiating, and traditional services by Floyd Hand. Burial will be at Holy Cross Episcopal cemetery in Pine Ridge.

Philenae R. Chipps-Escamilla
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Philenae R. Chipps-Escamilla, 28, Milwaukee, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, as the result of an auto accident in Anberg.
Survivors include her husband, Arturo Escamilla Sr., Milwaukee; four sons, Brandon Massell, Salina, Kan., Jeremiah Whitewash, Oglala, S.D., Trenton Chipps, Wanblee, S.D., and Arturo Escamilla Jr., Milwaukee; one daughter, Eva Escamilla, Milwaukee; her mother, Victoria Chipps, Wanblee, S.D.; four brothers, Philip Chipps II., Manderson, S.D., Philip Chipps III, Anberg, Brian Chipps, Iron Mountain, Mich., and Paige Chipps, Wanblee.
Two-night wake services will begin at 11 a.m. today at the Wanblee CAP office. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Wanblee CAP office, with the Rev. Gilford Noisy Hawk officiating and traditional services by Richard Moves Camp. Burial will be at the Chipps family cemetery in Wanblee.

Roy Harold Wood
LITTLETON, Colo. — Roy Harold Wood, 84, Littleton, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Littleton Hospital.
Survivors include one daughter, Rose Mary Miller, Littleton; and two grandsons.
Masonic graveside services were held at Fort Logan National cemetery in Denver.

Clayton Ball
HOT SPRINGS — Clayton Ball, 87, Hot Springs, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include one niece, Linda Anderson, Deadwood; and one nephew, Gary Romey, Hot Springs.
Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.
Maurice R. ‘Tubby' Messerli
RAPID CITY — Maurice R. "Tubby" Messerli, 92, Rapid City, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Survivors include one son, James R. Messerli, Cascade, Idaho; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
George E. Bickel
RAPID CITY - George E. Bickel, 96, Rapid City, died Saturday, Nov. 3, 2001, at a Rapid City nursing home.
He was born Feb. 2, 1905, at Herreid, S.D., the son of Fred and Eva (Wolfe) Bickel. He spent his early years at Herreid.
George married
Deatha Goolsbey on June 25, 1931, and they had two daughters.
The family resided in Aberdeen for a period of 27 years, where George was employed with the Department of Interior. He also sold farm real estate. Following his retirement, the couple moved to Sun City, Ariz. He was presently residing in Rapid City.
Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Larkin, Sun City West, Ariz., and Fae Hanks, and her husband, Ethan, Rapid City; three grandchildren, Diane Fenske, Cleveland, Ohio, Alan Hanks, Rapid City, and Dan Hanks, Vancouver, Wash.; four great-granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Deatha.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 until service time at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mountain View cemetery, with the Rev. Bob Ruedebusch officiating.
Peter M. Weiers
SPEARFISH - Peter M. Weiers, 16, Spearfish, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2001, as the
result of an auto accident near Spearfish.
Survivors include his mother, Lorie Baumann, Spearfish; his father, Michael Weiers, Spearfish; one brother, Tyler Weiers, Spearfish, one sister, Amy Weiers, Spearfish; maternal grandparents, Jerry and Orin Aldrich, Lead, and Jim and Helen Baumann, Mesa, Ariz.; and paternal grandparents, William Weiers, Sturgis and Ellen and Homer Watson, Spearfish.

Myron ‘Mike' Edwards
PLANKINTON — Myron "Mike" Edwards, 73, Plankinton, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Edwards; two sons, Randall Edwards, Rapid City, and Terry Edwards, Lake Villa, Ill.; three sisters, Twyla Adams, Scotland, Barbara Pryor, Oxnard, Calif., and Rochelle Edwards, Jackson, Minn.; three brothers, Edwin Edwards, Moorhead, Minn., Dennis Edwards, Fargo, N.D., and Creighton Edwards, Dallas, Texas; and six grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., today, with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. today at St. John's Catholic Church in Plankinton. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at the church, with the Rev. Alex Bombera officiating. Cremation will follow the service.
