She was born March 24, 1946, in Mobridge, to Eldon and LuVerne (Isley) Rosander. As a young girl, she lived with her family in the Isabel area. At age 3, Gloria contracted the polio virus, and throughout the following years, she spent a great deal of time at the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Minneapolis, Minn. She graduated from Isabel High School in 1964.
Gloria moved to Rapid City in 1965. She spent many years working as a bookkeeper for her father, Eldon, at the Villa One Hour Dry Cleaners in the Villa Ranchaero Shopping Center in Box Elder. In 1977, she joined the staff of Dr. Raymond Burnett as a medical transcriptionist. This "family" grew into what is today Black Hills OB/Gyn & Associates. Gloria loved her work up until the time of her death.
While Gloria accepted her disability with miraculous strength and courage, she was willing to share the issue with others. In 1993, she organized the Rapid City Chapter of the Tri-State Polio Survivors to encourage survivors, family, friends and health professionals to explore new post-polio problems. Gloria was a great source of inspiration to others for her ability to mentally defeat polio, and to thrive on living independently despite her limitations.
Among her greatest joys in life were spending time with her many friends, as well as family, shopping and cooking. She loved the beauty of the outdoors and the Western way of life. Her appreciation of "God's Country, " the Black Hills, never faltered. Her biggest love and joys in life were for her children and grandchildren, as well as her faith in God.
Gloria will be greatly missed by her friends and family, including her father and stepmother, Eldon and Eleanor Rosander, Rapid City; a brother, Larry, Oacoma; two sons, Robb (Wendy), Parker, Colo., and Shawn (Stephanie), Huron; two stepdaughters, Kim (Dave), Burke, Va., and Kate, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a stepson, Dirk, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and five grandchildren.
