Harold Lindquist
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. - Harold Lindquist, 82, Scottsbluff and formerly of Rapid City and Lead, S.D., died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Lindquist, Scottsbluff; three daughters, Rhonda Miller, Boise, Idaho, Karen Russell, Kearney, Neb., and Susan Loseke, Rapid City; two sons, Dennis Lindquist, Arvada, Colo., and Larry Lindquist, Columbus, Neb.; 15 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
He served in the U.S. Navy from July 6, 1944, until November of 1945.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel in Scottsbluff, with the Rev. John Kehn officiating.
Private burial will be at Pine Lawn Memorial cemetery in Rapid City.

Lucille 'Duke' Schiffner
BELLE FOURCHE - Lucille "Duke" Schiffner, 74, Belle Fourche, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.
Survivors include four sons, Timothy Schiffner, Mike Schiffner, Roger Schiffner and George Schiffner, all of Belle Fourche; two granddaughters; two stepgrandsons; and four great-grandchildren.
Her husband, George Allen Schiffner, preceded her in death.
Services and inurnment will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Grace Audrey Quiver
WANBLEE - Grace Audrey Quiver, 63, Wanblee, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, in Martin.
Survivors include one son, Michael Larvie, Rosebud; three daughters, Geraldine Larvie, Wanblee, Elizabeth Larvie, Rapid City, and Bethene Byars, Salt Lake City; three brothers, Gerald Quiver, Robert Quiver Sr. and Lewis Quiver, all of Wanblee; one sister, Geneva Janis, Hot Springs; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A two-night wake will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Wanblee CAP office.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at the CAP office, with the Rev. Joe Damhorst officiating.
Burial will be at St. Ignatious Catholic cemetery in Wanblee.

Floyd LeCompte
EAGLE BUTTE - Floyd LeCompte, 30, Eagle Butte, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, after an automobile accident.
An all-night wake service will begin at 7 p.m. MST Thursday, Dec. 6, at HV Johnson Cultural Center in Eagle Butte.
Services will be at 10 a.m. MST Friday, Dec. 7, at Eagle Butte School gym, with the Rev. Richard Charging Eagle officiating.
Burial will be at Mossman cemetery.

Flossie Thomas
RAPID CITY - Flossie Thomas, 92, Rapid City, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include two sons, Marvin Pafchke, Rapid City, and Ed Thomas, Port Angeles, Wash.
Arrangements are pending with Behrens Funeral Home of Rapid City.
Richard Parsons
RAPID CITY - Richard Colfax Harrison Parsons, 86, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001.
Born and raised in Glen Ellyn, Ill., Dick later attended Purdue University and Montana State College, working for the State of Montana as a mechanical engineer at Glacier National Park. Upon leaving Montana, he traveled to Alaska, where he and a friend staked and mined a claim adjacent to the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau. He also worked for the state weather service on the Aleutian Islands. Unable to join active service due to a physical disability, Dick spent two years as a civilian engineer with the U.S. government in the Azores, transferring to Port of Spain, Trinidad, where he met Jane Symms. In 1942 Dick and Jane returned to the States and married
in 1945 in Portland, Ore.
Dick spent the majority of his professional career in international travel. In 1946, as employees of the U.S. government, he and Jane were sent to Manila, Philippine Islands. In 1948 they were transferred to Cochabamba, Bolivia, where Dick was assigned by the U.S. government to work with the Bolivian government designing and directing the implementation of safer water and sanitation standards. Daughter Andrea was born, and later a son, Jeffrey, who died in infancy. In 1951, he left Bolivia for Caracas, Venezuela, where he assumed the position of Acting Chief Engineer with the Institute of International Affairs. He returned to the states in 1952 for the birth of his son, Steven, and in 1952 transferred to Caracas, Venezuela, where daughter Leslie Gail was born in 1954. During this period Dick, was named U.S. delegate for CENTO (Central Treaty Organization) in Geneva, Switzerland.
In 1955, Dick and his family moved to the Washington, D.C. area as a civilian engineer for the Department of State. During his tenure, he was the U.S. coordinator for the Task Force on Cholera, leading a government team of medical professionals whose responsibility it was to identify and prioritize all activities related to international cholera control assistance. He authored a publication for the Agency for International Development on the containment and eradication of cholera in the Mideast and was primarily responsible for the coordination of vaccine distribution to these nations throughout several presidential administrations.
In 1974, Dick retired and moved to the Black Hills in 1977 with his wife. A man of many interests, he was an avid reader of historical events, maintained an extensive stamp collection, and fished. He was an active member of the B.P.O.E. and Society of the Black Hills Pioneers.
Dick is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jane, and their children, "Andy" Parsons of Rapid City, son "Steve" Parsons and his wife and two children of Silver Springs, Md., daughter "Casey" Brittain and her husband and two children of Greeville, N.C., a sister and three nieces.
A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, December 6, at 4 p.m. at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City, with Rev. Herb Cleveland officiating. The family will receive friends at their residence immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Black Hills Workshop or Rapid City Humane Society.
Willard 'Sam' Sammeli
RAPID CITY — Willard "Sam" Sammeli, 70, of Rapid City, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.
Sam was born April 24, 1931, in Rapid City, S.D., to Vernon and Frances (Aronson) Sammeli. Except for four years serving in the Navy during the Korean War, he has lived in Rapid City, where he grew up and attended school. He retired from the State Cement Plant in May of 1993 as Heavy Equipment Foreman after 45 years there. He and his wife, Maxine (Berry) Sammeli, recently celebrated their 25th anniversary.
He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1273 and the Elks Lodge, both of Rapid City. Sam enjoyed going south for the winter, spent hours doing fretwork on his saw, and was an avid reader. He will be sadly missed by a multitude of friends and his family.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine Sammeli of Rapid City; six children, Kevin Sammeli, Kathy Sammeli, Kelly Sammeli and Mike Berry, all of Rapid City, Kirby Sammeli of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Connie Eaton of Chadron, Neb.; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. until time of services.
Services are set for 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at Kirk Funeral Home's Chapel of Light, with Bob Wall officiating. Interment will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors by VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City.
A memorial has been established for the National Kidney Foundation.
Phyllis Mae Pederson Wakeman
CANISTOTA — Phyllis Mae Pederson Wakeman, 78, Canistota, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Syverson, Oldham, and Nancy Swenson, Waldorf, Md.; one son, Julius Swenson, Rapid City; four sisters, Alice Sprague, Salem, Ellen Larson, Lake Norden, Esther Reich, Nampa, Idaho, and Joyce Kneip, Arlington; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arlington.
Services will follow at 2 p.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Loren Odland officiating.
Burial will be at Arlington cemetery.

Elmer 'Bud' Ruttmann
PIERRE — Elmer "Bud" Ruttmann, 76, Pierre, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Maryhouse Sub-acute Center in Pierre.
Survivors include one son, Joe Bateman, Arlington, Texas; a brother, Schyler Ruttmann, Upper Sandusky, Ohio; a sister, Dorothy Gilsinger, Rapid City; three sisters, Edna Maye Schmitz, Fort Pierre, Dollie Rolston, Lake Andes, and Donna Rankin, Pierre; and three brothers, Robert Hagemann and Jesse Lee, both of Pierre, and Ronnie Hagemann, San Jose, Calif.
Visitation and prayer service were Thursday, Sept. 6, at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pierre.
Burial will be at Riverside cemetery in Pierre.
Willis W. Howard
CUSTER — Willis W. Howard, 92, of Custer, S.D., died Wednesday, September 5, 2001, at the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Custer.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, September 7, 2001, at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Custer.
Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2001, at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Custer, with Rev. Dan Barcus officiating.
Burial will follow at 5:15 p.m. at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche, S.D.
Willis was born on January 25, 1909, in Beresford, S.D., to Clayton and Florence (Willison) Howard. Willis attended and later graduated from Black Hills State University with BS degree. He taught in rural schools in Butte County, Zebach and Perkins counties. During the war he was a pipefitter in the shipyards.
Willis was a member of the Odd Fellows; the Masonic Lodge; the Hot Springs Senior Citizens Center, for which he served as president; and the Hot Springs Hamm Radio Club.
He loved music, played in a dance band and always had time to tell a good story and have a laugh.
He is survived by his wife, Florence; his daughter Loyce and her husband Tom May; his son Donald Howard and his wife Caren; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Custer.
Joe Leonard
SPEARFISH — Joe Leonard, 89, Spearfish, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Survivors include one son, Jim Leonard, Avon, Conn.; three daughters, Peggy Zieser, Rowley, Iowa, Mary Pritchett, Englewood, Colo., and Cathy Mitchell, Spearfish; three sisters, Patricia Cruz, Mira Loma, Calif., Rita Fox, Waterloo, Iowa, and Gertrude Slick, Iowa; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Viola M. DeWald
RAPID CITY — Viola M. DeWald, 86, Rapid City, died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at a local nursing home.
Survivors include two sons, Norman DeWald, Rapid City, and Richard DeWald, River Vale, N.J.; one brother, Ruben Zeller, Gregory; and two grandchildren.

Opal Vivien 'Dolly' Hall
CUSTER — Opal Vivien "Dolly" Hall, 78, of Custer, died Tuesday, September 4, 2001.
Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, September 7, 2001, at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Custer.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 8, 2001, at Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Custer, with Pastor Bill Savery officiating.
Burial will follow at the Edgemont cemetery.
Our very special mom, grandma, aunt and friend made her journey to the spirit world on Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
She was born June 30, 1923, at Allen, S.D. She was the seventh of eight children of Ed and Pearl Bettleyoun and was raised at Lacreek and a ranch seven miles west of Allen, S.D. She was married
to Hermit Stokes in September 1944. After dad returned from IE Shima in the Pacific Ocean at the end of WWII, they lived at Igloo and Edgemont, S.D., until his death in March 1966.
She was married
to Alfred Lee "Murph" Hall in May 1968. They lived at Custer, S.D., and Tooele, Utah, until 1991, when she returned to South Dakota.
She lived at Landover Estates, where she had many wonderful friends.
She is survived by William and Sandra Stokes; Charles and Susan Stokes; Lee and Lois Stokes; Linda and Clifford Bebbington; Susan and Patrick Dillon; 14 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and special relatives Karen Conroy, Louise Conroy, Dorothy and Mario Gonzales, Geraldine and Richard Red Owl, Rovella Bettleyoun, Velma and Bill Chapman, Dean Bettelyoun and their families.
