June Paulson
WALLA WALLA, Wash. June Paulson, 82, Walla Walla, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Eastern State Hospital in Medical Lake.
Survivors include one brother, Duane Paulson, Brooklyn, N.Y., and two sisters, Gladys Ebreck, Crosby, N.D., and Barbara Broman, Walla Walla.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21, at Stakston Martin Funeral Home in Crosby.
Graveside rites will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Immanuel cemetery near Crosby, with the Rev. Norman Anderson officiating.
Morgan James McLeland
LARAMIE, Wyo. Funeral services for Morgan J. McLeland, 21, student at University of Wyoming, Laramie, Wyo., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 19, 2001, at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Gillette, with Bishop Ryan Tew as officiant. Interment will follow at Mount Pisgah cemetery, Gillette. Visitation was held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 18, 2001, at the church. He died Sunday, September 16, 2001, near Laramie, Wyo., in a car crash along with seven of his teammates as well as good friends.
Morgan James McLeland was born February 1, 1980, to Charles James and Deborah Jane (Dumbrill) McLeland in Newcastle, Wyo. He grew up in Gillette, attending Westwood, Hillcrest and Stocktrail elementary schools and Sage Valley Junior High School. He was very athletic and was involved in soccer, football, basketball, and was a member of the Gillette Edge. He especially enjoyed playing basketball with his friends in the sixth-grade class at Stocktrail Elementary. He also enjoyed fly-fishing.
He attended Campbell County High School and was on the honor roll, attended Boy's State and was an avid runner. He was a three-time member of the All State Cross Country Track Team and was State 4A Champion in 1998, which lifted the Camels to the team title and earned them a third-place ranking in the nation. He also held a course record. He was a mentor to his teammates as well as his classmates. He attended South Campus of Campbell County High School the first semester it was open and graduated in 1999. He began attending the University of Wyoming in fall 1999 on a track scholarship. He was also on the honor roll in college and was working on strengthening himself so he could continue competing in track. He was currently in his junior year, working towards a degree in secondary education with a concentration in social sciences and history.
He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by his parents, Jim and Debbie McLeland, Gillette, Wyo.; two brothers, Nathan Spencer and wife Robbie (Hansen) McLeland, who is a second-year law student at University of Wyoming, and Ryan Clarke McLeland, Gillette, Wyo.; maternal grandparents, Richard and Lucille Dumbrill, Newcastle, Wyo.; special family friends, Steve and Sheila Pecha, Gillette, Wyo.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, C.M. and Florence "Teddy" McLeland, and great-grandparents Dr. Floyd and Nina Clarke, Annie and Henry Covey, Bessie Baker and Fern and Harold Dumbrill.

Harold A. Harry' Schmitz
FORT PIERRE Harold A. "Harry" Schmitz, 77, Fort Pierre, died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Maryhouse Sub-Acute Care Center in Pierre.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Maye Schmitz; four sons, James Dyer, Brandon, Kevin Schmitz, Norfolk, Va., Greg Schmitz, Mount Vernon, Wash., Michael Schmitz, Valentine, Neb.; one daughter, Darla Meinen, New Underwood; two brothers, Melvin Schmitz, Oakes, N.D., and Richard Schmitz, Harrold; five sisters, Darlene Arendt, Sun Lakes, Ariz., Lucille Bickett and Lois Harvey, both of Sioux Falls, Janice Broneman, Harrold, and Patricia Gregg, Pierre; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, today at Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel in Pierre.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Community Bible Church in Pierre.
Burial will be at Riverside cemetery in Pierre.
Louise J. Wilkinson
HOT SPRINGS Louise J. Wilkinson, 89, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs.
Survivors include one daughter, Della Rae Bowers, Monroe, Ore.
Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel in Hot Springs.
Mary 'Rose' Englebert
HOT SPRINGS Mary "Rose" Englebert, 93, of Hot Springs, died Saturday, September 15, 2001, at the Castle Manor Nursing Home in Hot Springs.
Christian Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 20, 2001, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hot Springs.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 21, 2001, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with Fr. Peter Kovarik officiating.
Burial will follow at Evergreen cemetery.
Rose was born October 12, 1907, in Genora, North Dakota, to Mary Elizabeth Marion and Gustave William Rossknecht. She spent her early childhood in North Dakota, and moved to Hot Springs with her family in 1929. She married
Bill Englebert, and to this union two children were born, Stanley Everett and Betty Ann. She operated Rose's Bar from 1963 to 1988. She was the oldest and longest business owner on Main Street in Hot Springs. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion, lifetime member of the VFW and lifetime member of the Order of the Does Drove No. 47. She was a treasurer for over 40 years. Rose was one of the first Charter members of the Mammoth Site and a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
Grateful to have shared in her life are her daughter, Betty Ann Pesicka of Hot Springs; two sisters, Lucy Wilson of Hot Springs and Irene Wolverton of Arro Grande, Calif.; one brother, Gus Rossknecht of Grants Pass, Ore.; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, Susan and Tim Dake (Brian and Jessica) of Scottsdale, Ariz., Linda and Bill Schneider (Meredith, Allison and Paige) of Malcolm, Neb., Patti and Duane Heinert (Melissa and Rebecca) of Omaha, Neb., Rosie and Marty Elmore (Leslie and Gina) of Hot Springs, Jon and Jamie Pesicka (Taylor) of Lakewood, Colo., Cissie and Gregg Buckert (Garrett, Caley and Trace) Cheyenne, Wyo., Kristi Saltz of Omaha, Neb., Everett and Dawn Englebert (Chance, Miles and Clay) of Edgemont, Jim and Nicole Pesicka of Omaha, Neb., and Jay and Cyndee Pesicka of San Clemente, Calif.; sisters-in-law Margaret Rossknecht of Rapid City, Faye Rossknecht of Rapid City, Doris Rossknecht of Hot Springs and Dorothy Weisser of Hot Springs; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Rose will be remembered for her love of children and her family. Her generosity touched many not just family and friends, but the community, tourists and especially the veterans.
She was preceded in death by her son, Stanley Englebert; two sisters, Ann Stone of Hot Springs and Alice Stevens of St. Louis, Mo.; and five brothers, Teddy, Joe, Herman, Raymond, and Ralph Rossknecht.
A memorial has been established in Rose's memory in care of Betty Pesicka, 1911 Wilson Ave., Hot Springs, SD 57747.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs.
Ted May
RAPID CITY Ted May, 94, Rapid City, died Friday, December 21, 2001, at a local nursing home.
Ted was born January 4, 1907, to Ben and Maude (Harris) May in Green City, Missouri, and had six brothers and six sisters. He came to South Dakota in 1923, where he worked for various ranchers and farmers.
He was married
to Fern Dippert in June of 1935, and to this union were born three sons. They were divorced in 1956, and Ted moved to the Black Hills, where he was employed in the construction business.
In 1958, he married
Elsie Herman, and they made their home in Rapid Valley, where he was employed by the Pennington County Highway Department until he retired. They briefly worked for the Neugebauer Dairy for several years.
He is survived by his son Del (Lucille) of Rapid City, S.D.; stepson, Gary Herman of Rapid City, S.D.; grandchildren, Todd (Pat) May and Thomas May, all of Detroit, Mich., Tamera (Doug) Roth, Terry (Leslie) May and Tylee (James) Peterson, all of Rapid City, S.D., Scott May of Evanston, Wyo., and Corbin (Terry) Herman of Custer, S.D.; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother, Herb May of Modesto, Calif.; three sisters, Evelyn Smith, Mildren Ballenbach of Seal Beach, Calif., and Fern (Glen) Frazier of Milan, Missouri; sister-in-law Cynthia May of Amarillo, Texas; and numerous friends and neighbors.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, and two sons, Jerry and Louie.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 26, 2001, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Behrens Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be Thursday, December 27, 2001, at 10 a.m. at Behrens Funeral Home, with Pastor Marvin Jones and Thomas May.
A memorial has been established for the Shriners Travel Trust Fund.
Lorine Foerster Spencer
YANKTON Lorine Foerster Spencer, 99, Yankton, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.
Survivors include one daughter, Jean Kelley, Rapid City; one son, Wallace Spencer, Yankton; three granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Jean Harper, Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Kostel Funeral Home in Yankton and for one hour before services Friday, Dec. 28, at Christ Church Episcopal in Yankton.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. James Pearson officiating.
Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Logan Park cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa.
Patricia Helen Conway
STURGIS Patricia Helen Conway, 66, Sturgis, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Sturgis Community Long Term Care Center.
Survivors include two sons, Byron Conway, Luverne, Minn., and Albert Conway, Spearfish; one daughter, Patricia Coverdale, Deadwood; one sister, Mae Johnson, Lead; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and for one hour before services Friday, Dec. 28, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Lloyd Lemke officiating.
Burial will follow at Bear Butte cemetery in Sturgis.
A memorial has been established.
Dennis James D.J.' Big Crow
PINE RIDGE Dennis James "D.J." Big Crow, 25, Pine Ridge, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Red Shirt Table as a result of an automobile accident.
Survivors include his parents, Gerald and Jackie Big Crow, Pine Ridge, and three brothers, Waylon Big Crow and John Big Crow, both of Pine Ridge, and William Big Crow, Okinawa, Japan.
One-night wake begins at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, at Billy Mills Hall in Pine Ridge.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Billy Mills Hall. Wilmer Mesteth will officiate at traditional services.
Burial will be at St. Anne's Catholic cemetery in Wolf Creek.
Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

LEMMON Melvin Wilson, 88, Lemmon, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Five Counties Hospital in Lemmon.
Survivors include one daughter, Millie Ruby, Burleson, Texas; two grandchildren; and five great-granddaughters.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lemmon.
Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Survivors include two sons, Manual Martin, Oglala, and David Martin, Buffalo Gap; four daughters, Marilyn Martin, Red Shirt Table, Gerilyn Collins, Rapid City, Beulah Peters, Salt Lake City, and Arlette Weasel Bear, Aberdeen, Wash.; one sister, Evangeline Romey, Buffalo Gap; 22 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
One-night wake begins at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Brother Rene Catholic Hall in Oglala.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at Brother Rene Hall, with the Rev. Earl Kurth officiating.

Walter Erdman
NEWCASTLE, Wyo. Walter Erdman, 80, Newcastle, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Weston County Manor in Newcastle.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Erdman, Newcastle; one son, Donald Hoffman, Rapid City; two stepsons, Lynn Nelson, Newcastle, and Cory Nelson, Denver; and one brother, Ed Tripp, Rapid City.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, at Worden Funeral Chapel in Newcastle.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, at Newcastle United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Trish Underberg officiating.
Burial will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, S.D.
