Cody Dylan Jacobs

PINE RIDGE — Cody Dylan Jacobs, 7, Number Four Community, Pine Ridge, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, in Pine Ridge.

Survivors include his paternal grandmother, Mary Jacobs, Pine Ridge; his paternal grandfather, Daniel Mosseau, Scottsbluff, Neb.; his maternal grandfather, Lester Cortier, Number Four Community; his parents, Leslie Cortier, Number Four Community, and Lyle Jacobs, Rapid City; two brothers, Kyle Cortier and Frank Yellow Boy III, both of Number Four Community; and one sister, Francine Cortier, Number Four Community.

A two-night wake will begin at 2 p.m. today at Payabaya Seventh Day Adventists Church in Number Four Community.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at the church, with the Rev. Richard Allison officiating.

Burial will be at Lakota Family cemetery in Number Four Community.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Robert A. McBee

RAPID CITY — Robert A. McBee, 73, Rapid City, died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at his home.

Survivors include one son, Loral Williams, Rapid City; one daughter, Linda Williams, Tucson, Ariz.; one brother, George McBee, Monon, Ind.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Behrens Funeral Home in Rapid City, with the Rev. Bruce Baum officiating.

Burial will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.

Clarence Dressel Jr.

HOT SPRINGS — Clarence Dressel Jr., 76, Hot Springs, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home in Hot Springs.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Dressel, Rapid City.

Arrangements are pending with Rooks-McColley Funeral Chapel of Hot Springs.

V.J. 'Wempe' Wempe

BOX ELDER — V.J. "Wempe" Wempe, 65, Box Elder, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Spoonmore, Box Elder; four children, Jay Wempe and Nikki Wempe, both of Rapid City, Jim Wempe, San Diego, and Joe Wempe, Wicksville, Fla.; two sisters, Gen Grey, Mitchell, and Twila Carroll, Aurora, Neb.; and three grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until service time Thursday, Sept. 6, at Behrens Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Michael Hight officiating.

Burial will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Jinny M. Hoffman

ST. ONGE — Jinny Hoffman, 42, St. Onge, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, in a vehicular accident in Mountrail County, N.D.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Hoffman, St. Onge; two sons, Justin Skipper and Lorin Skipper, both of St. Onge; her parents, Lawrence and Dorothy Keppers, Brainerd, Minn.; and one sister, Janice Petersen, St. Cloud, Minn.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche and for one hour before services Thursday, Sept. 6, at Belle Fourche United Methodist Church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Steve Olson officiating.

Mathilda 'Tillie' Lincoln Joseph

RAPID CITY — Mathilda "Tillie" Lincoln Joseph, 87, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at her home.

Survivors include one daughter, Alma Andrews, Rapid City; four sons, Namose Joseph, Ronald Joseph and Donald Joseph, all of New Orleans, and Jerald Joseph, Charleston, S.C.; one sister, Dorothy McKnight, New Orleans; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Elton W. Werner

RAPID CITY — Elton W. Werner, 72, of Rapid City, died Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at a local nursing home.

Elton was born December 13, 1928, to Julius and Clara (Weinkauf) Werner in Edgar, Wisconsin, where he also attended schools. He enlisted with the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War. Elton married Isabel Wolf in Brandon, Canada, on November 28, 1958. They moved to Rapid City in 1968 from Dickinson, N.D. He worked for the Street Department in Rapid City for 15 years before retiring in 1990.

Elton was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Rapid City, a life member of the VFW and a member of the Minneluzahan Senior Center.

Elton loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, woodworking, fishing, camping and the outdoors. Upon retiring, he traveled and loved working in the yard with the flowers and trees.

He is survived by his wife, Isabel Werner of Rapid City; one son, William Werner and wife Mary of Rapid City; one daughter, Marla Bockman and husband John of Leavenworth, Kan.; one brother, Holland Werner and wife Linnea of Gwinn, Mich.; one sister, Mildred Jelovsek of Waukegan, Ill.; and six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, Mary Beth Burns and daughter Ashtney, Shawn Werner and Travis Werner all of Rapid City, and Ryan, Michael and Jesse Bockman, all of Leavenworth, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lester and Hubert; and two sisters, Arminda and Marvel.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 5, 2001, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, and for one hour before services at the church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with Rev. Douglas Free officiating.

Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Richard Ray Ziegler

MARTIN - Richard Ray Ziegler (also known as Rick or Zig) was born on September 13, 1950, at Hot Springs, to Raymond and Dorothy Karns Ziegler. At the age of four months, he moved with his parents and sister to Martin.

He attended Martin Grade School and Bennett County High School, where he graduated with the class of 1969. While attending high school, Rick enjoyed helping his dad at Ziegler Funeral Home, the ambulance service and farming with his uncle Harold.

Upon graduation, Rick enlisted in the United States Army. He attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He served in Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos as a helicopter crewman. Later, he was stationed in Stuttgart, West Germany. Rick was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1972. After returning home to Martin, South Dakota, he worked on various housing projects.

On July 13, 1973, he was united in marriage to Patty Hein. They made their home in Mitchell, S.D., where Rick attended Dakota Wesleyan College and did his apprenticeship in mortuary science with Milliken Funeral Home. On December 31, 1973, his daughter, Amber Joy, was born.

In 1975, Rick, Patty and Amber moved to Dallas, Texas, where Rick attended Dallas Institute of Mortuary Science. Rick graduated with honors in 1976. At this time, Rick, and his family returned to Martin, where he joined in partnership with his father in the operation of Ziegler Funeral Home, which he continued until the time of his death.

Rick and Mary Anderson were united in marriage on August 5, 1983. Rick and Mary just celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary at Custer State Park.

Rick owned and operated Ziegler Furniture Store from 1979 until 1996. In 1994, he purchased the Meyers farm southeast of Tuthill. Rick enjoyed renovating the Red Onion Ranch with family and friends. Rick spent time there hunting and relaxing.

Rick was a member of St. Katherine's Episcopal Church, American Legion Post 240, Martin Commercial Club, South Dakota Funeral Directors Association and National Funeral Directors Association.

He was a member in good standing of Pioneer Lodge 219 AF and AM and as a 32nd degree Mason. He was a member of El Riad Shrine Temple in Yankton, S.D. Being a member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever, Rick enjoyed hunting and fishing in the great outdoors with his daughter, nephews and friends.

Rick was instrumental in planning and developing the new Martin Community Heritage Center. It was a dream he was able to see come true.

Rick passed away on Sunday, September 2, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of Martin; one daughter, Amber Joy of Rapid City; one sister, LaVerne Arnold of Martin; two nephews, Brandon Arnold of Rapid City and Justin Ziegler of Vermillion; one great-niece, Miranda Dawn of Rapid City; three aunts, Lucille Kosmicke of Martin, Eloise Reynolds of Leon, Iowa, and Betty Karns of Spearfish; and many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 7, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the American Legion Auditorium, Martin, South Dakota, with Father Ron Hennies and Father Phillip Allen, both of Rapid City, and Reverend Terry Olthoff of Martin officiating. Active pallbearers are Brandon Arnold, Ron Haag, Herb Hodson, Roland Kammerzell, Kim Karns, Galen Livermont, Steve Thompson and Justin Ziegler. Honorary pallbearers are all friends in attendance. Military graveside rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 240. Pioneer Lodge 219 AF and AM will be conducting Masonic rites.

Interment will be at Martin Community cemetery, conducted by Ziegler Funeral Home.

A memorial will be established in memory of Rick Ziegler.

James C. Mullen

BROKEN BOW, Neb. — James C. Mullen, 83, Broken Bow and formerly of Valentine, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, in Broken Bow.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Kreischer, California, Pat Storm, Kentucky, and Maureen Hansen, Kansas; two sons, Clancy Mullen, North Platte, Neb., and Shawn, Wisconsin; and one brother, A.C. Mullen, Virginia.

A rosary was Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Sandoz Chapel of the Pines in Valentine.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Valentine.

Burial will follow at Mount Hope cemetery in Valentine.

Duane Hartl

SUNDANCE, Wyo. - Duane Hartl, 70, Sundance, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 6, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Sundance, from 3 p.m. until the Rosary Service at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 7, at United Methodist Church in Sundance, with the Rev. Bruce R. Clapham officiating.

Burial, with military honors, will follow at Black Hills National cemetery.

A memorial has been established to the Sundance Ambulance Service.

Duane was born Nov. 1, 1931, at Rapid City, S.D., to Herman Alfred and Janetta Belle (Fillingham) Hartl. He grew up in Sturgis, S.D., graduating from Sturgis High School in 1950. He enlisted in the Air Force in January 1951 and served until his discharge in November of 1954.

On Dec. 29, 1953, Duane married Joyce M. Best at Cutbank, Mont. He graduated from Black Hills State Teachers College in 1958 and received his Master's Degree from the University of Wyoming in 1969. He taught school in Sundance from 1958 until 1975. He then worked as accountant at Tri County Electric until retiring on Jan. 7, 1994. Duane continued doing taxes up until his death.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing and playing cards. His eight grandchildren were a very important part of his life.

Duane was a Life Member of the V.F.W., the American Legion and was a charter member of the Lions Club in Sundance.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of Sundance; two sons, Joe Hartl, Findlay, Ohio, and Stephen Hartl, Sundance; one daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Gerry Granahan, Loveland, Colo.; a brother, Vincent Hartl, Spearfish; and eight grandchildren, Stephanie Hartl, Drew Hartl, Trevor and Tyler Hartl, Tim Granahan, Erin Granahan, Kody Hartl and Kelly Hartl.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Theckla Harrison and Opal Ogle.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish.
